I’m reading Arsenal is signing Tobin for around a year or 2. Guess Louisville refused to trade her rights to Angel or San Diego.

Arsenal did not need another winger but you can never refuse quality players.

    United 2 Reading 0

Three key moments in the game that were influenced by refereeing decision:

Staniforth booked but red card for serious foul play for a high and dangerous tackle would not have been wrong.

Rowe elbowed an opponent in the head I think. Missed by the referee.

Chaplen scores a goal as the ball hit the crossbar and goes over the line. Impossible for the referee and her assitant to see it.

Score was 1-0 at that point and United scored their second goal one minute later.

So VAR and goal-line technology would have been helpful in that game.

Yeah, I did think Staniforth's challenge was borderline red.

Disagree on the Rowe one. I don't think there was any significant motion towards Hanson's head, and Rowe's elbow wasn't extended at all. It was just one of several nifty dribbing moves Rowe pulled off; some other players pulled off a nifty move or two (Boe Risa nutmeg and Toone on Batlle's goal), but Groenen was the only player in the match who rivaled Rowe's footwork in my opinion.

Lucky break for United on that one.

VAR would have taken a serious look at United's second goal. I'm not completely sure myself about whether Galton was onside on Mannion's long ball.

Thomas could have seriously had a brace or a hattrick.
68th minute - If she had brought down the cross from Groenen, which I thought was quite good, she would have had a high xG chance.
79th/80th minute - She shot well wide off of Hanson's cross from a halfway decent shooting position in my opinion.
82nd minute or around there - If she had held her run better to stay onside, that could have maybe been a great opportunity for her on Russo's throughball. (Not sure she made a serious effort to score once the offside was given.)
83rd minute - Good ball from Groenen into Thomas. Thomas actually did pretty well here; she just couldn't get enough bend on the ball.

City beating Everton 4-0 really surprised me.
Villa beating Leicester 2-1 after coming from behind is a half surprise. Spurs beating Birmingham 1-0 is normal.

Someone’s got to explain to me how you can make a no call like Mead’s second in one of the top leagues in the world. You can forgive the Galton one without VAR if Galton was offside, but Mead never looked remotely onside. You didn’t even need a replay to see that; VAR would have ruled that out in like 5 seconds.

Indeed big error by the assistant referee that had a big influence on the result. This is not good knowing those H to H often decide who win the League.

    Big win for the Gunners.

Damn: I missed the Arsenal v. Chelsea match. Was it on FA Player? Will have to watch a replay. I saw where Kerr and Kirby only came on at 56' or so. Sounds like a cracking good match.

On the FA Player if where you live didn’t show it on TV. Not sure if replays are restricted that way.

    Tactically very interesting 3-4-3 v 4-3-3.
Arsenal having a very attacking left side with McCabe very high and Iwabuchi inside left.

What a disappointing first game for Everton. Overrated as always. I will predict it will be the usual 3 once again on top, and then occasionally United/Villa.

A couple very nice goals and an offside goal, but did Arsenal win a bit ugly?

    FBref
    1) 1.1 xG Arsenal [which includes the > 0.5 xG Beth Mead offside goal (my educated guess)] vs 1.1 xG Chelsea
    2) Walti - 19/26 passing, 0 progressive passes, 30 yards progressive passing distance
    3) Little - 18/22 passing, 0 progressive passes, 26 yards progressive passing
    4) Maanum - 14/21 passing, 1 progressive pass, 53 yards progressive passing
    5) No xA combined from the above three players

I only started watching the match when it was already 3-2 though; so, if anyone feels the match looked different eye test wise, fair enough.

Arsenal implemented a defensive gameplan at 3-2 subbing many defenders in. If you watch the full game, it was a very interesting tactical battle.

Thanks. Given there were 60+ minutes of football before the 3-2 score, I was just a bit surprised by the low numbers by all three Arsenal starting midfielders since Walti and Little are very much possession oriented and Maanum seems kind of similar.

City eliminated by Champions League debutant Real Madrird is shocking.
Even more shocking is they played 0 pre-season friendly and went straight into the WCL qualifiers.

4 times in a row elimination by Spanish club goes well beyond an issue of pre-season. FA WSL is aiming to be the best in Europe yet after unpacking and looking closely... it still dosen't look like the merchandise suggested by it's delightfull wrapping.
La Liga has it's own problem for sure but on competitve level it's pretty solid.
I reckon English fans should accept this...they're gonna be less shocked in future.

I think City do not know how to handle Spanish teams. There are not used to teams playing very good passing football.

    (From preseason) -
Thank you for that! I'm embarrassed I didn't know about Queen's Park Women at all - they play in division 2 now - and their club is such a legendary name in football's early history.
The men's team finally went professional after 150 years(!), which David Bolt wrote about, and then, this year the male side won promotion. So, hopefully the women will be able to do the same in less time than that. :)

[IMG] Also in Scotland, the Women's Premier League is now underway for the new season. The goals began immediately, in the first minute, when Priscila Chinchilla (Costa Rica) scored for Glasgow City in the champions' 6-0 win vs Motherwell.

There are now ten clubs in the top division, with three new teams. Aberdeen have come up as title-winners of SWPL2, and they had a hectic day at home on their return to division 1, at Balmoral Stadium:

[IMG] 30 years of the English leagues: It might not get a birthday celebration at the FA, but this year is the anniversary of the first Women's National League season, 1991/92, when the champions were Doncaster Belles, ahead of Red Star Southampton.

    1) Have to (jokingly) wonder if Skinner thinks the league reverted back to three subs. He's left two unused in both the first two matches of the season with two goal leads in the final 20 minutes. I do kind of get it, but I also wonder how someone like Fereira Fuso is going to get league minutes.
    2) The complete lack of communication that resulted in M. Turner's injury floors me. Two teammates should absolutely not be going for the same ball with a high foot like that. In contrast, look at how Groenen read a situation in the 2nd half and held off a Leicester defender to allow Batlle to get a dangerous shot on goal. Hope M. Turner recovers well and as quickly and safely as possible.

Yes again another refereeing error this week. The FA need to move the women referees to professional status. Urgently.

Brighton top of the League is a surprise. Four teams with six points and four teams with 0 point.

Willie Kirk (Everton) and Gareth Taylor (Man City) will have to improve their form after the international window. And there is an Arsenal v City game coming up 26 Sep

Although the standard is much higher we would have those in men's football before VAR. That would be an interesting gender equity discussion, should teh WSL have VAR as well.

The FA said it cost too much at the moment and also most teams play in shitty football ground. They play from time to time at the men's ground but not always.
