But, oddly, does the team need Fischer?! Was the team better without her at the Olympics?!

Sounds heretical to say it, but players do age. Except in America (ha-ha)

Need, no. But she would be usefull, after all we may send 23 to the Euros.

So you don't think of her as one of the Starting XI for Sweden anymore.

In the US, we would be holding open a spot for her, the coach giving breathless updates on her return to fitness. I think the US still needs, as Megan Rapinoe put it, a kick in the teeth. Or as David Bowie might've put it, the Not-So-Young-Americans still need a good old-fashioned sock-in-the-jaw.

Hard to say, it will depend on current form and what Gerhardsson think is needed for the match at hand. But I do not think she have a starting spot guaranteed, but will probably start in some possibly most.

Sweden’s replacement was a very agile Amanda Ilestedt who can play either CB or FB equally as good. Another cool thing about her is she’s usually on top ten lists of the sexiest looking players around!

But got to ask Swedes why their own league keeps giving up their best players ala Rosengard(who looked atrociously bad in their last CL game vs the part amateur club, Hoffenheim). Do you feel they might become better players in like the WSL? Or are the clubs in desperate financial trouble?

But in an way, Holland’s proving you don’t need an good professional league to have an top national team

Possibly, and in the long run yes. IOW the current batch may or many not have a better chance to develop in WSL or Bundesliga etc but if the current development continues (which is likely) there will be no doubt about that in a few years.
No. But they do what Swedish Men clubs do, sell when the price is right since it is rarely worth keeping a disgruntled player for ½ a season when you can get some good money for her (or him for the male counterparts). And may if the price is right be worth it even if there are longer left on the contract, unless the player are vital.

About the process to replace the "older" players in our WNT,
Seems like at least two of the three (Lindahl and Fischer) talked it over with Gerhardsson after the Olympics and offered to step down if he wanted to take in younger talents (I suspect Seger also did that but the interview I read today was with Fischer and the one a few days back with Lindahl). He told them that age itself is not a factor and that he want them in as long as they where the best option, then he made sure they where had no problem with not starting or even not playing if and when he thinks other options are better.

was there any kind of criticism of Sweden’s last game performance?(1-0 over #45 ranked Slovakia)

and yeah, heard of the earth shattering event happening in your country …..the ABBA reunion! Though I preferably enjoyed more the performance of an imitation group I saw at an local casino….the would be Agnatha & Frieda looked like they were still in their twenties!

Some, but not much. Mostly like "they have to do better" or "No need for Panic, just yet.".
Well, as I understand it so will they as ABBAtars :)

a few possible interesting notes; Rolfo was voted Sweden’s footballer of the year. Got tHe feeling it’s cause she plays for CL champs Barca. Not sure if she’s considered an starter for them, Barca has had some injury problems, might of gotten her more playing time than last season, but’s played excellent when starting in some the recent CL games

Unconfirmed reports have Blackstenius headed for Man U.

Everybody should of seen this coming; Jacobsson’s ‘direct soccer style’ was not going to be an hit in the heavy handed Teutonic coaching of the Bundesliga. But staying on the bench with almost no playing time could keep her & Glas well rested for the Euros?

Dagens Nyheter has an interesting article today about Marika Domanski Lyfors, who hopes that Team Sweden wins gold, for many reasons, including honoring her husband Ulf Lyfors who passed away suddenly during this year's Algarve Cup. Um. So, like, no pressure or anything. (Edit: oh right, and it would have been his birthday Saturday, dvs the opening match against Netherlands)

The article reminds us that Euro 2005 was Seger's first big tournament. It has some pictures too, and I recommend the first bunch especially (the black and white ones), which are from Euro 1984, and includes then-Coach Ulf Lyfors talking to miserably drenched player Pia Sundhage.

Also, SAS's pilots have now gone on strike, which is probably going to damage the travel plans of some fans, which Olivia Schough thinks is supertråkigt, Other players' families are caught in "den svenska passcirkusen" (fun new word!) and, for example, Johanna Rytting Kaneryd's biggest supporter, her dad, probably won't make it even if he can find a flight because he didn't renew his passport in time. His daughter is unsympathetic, saying he has only himself to blame.

I count on watching such scenes live soon, since Asllani has just been signed by my town's club (Milan AC). :p

Errrrr, argh! Another day, another article in Dagens Nyheter – "Not thinking about anything other than a gold medal" – and I don't have time to go over it point by point, but the important thing is the Team Sweden is the favorite for the Euros, the players know their team is the favorite, at least some of the players welcome being favorites, and I'm freaking out! This. Is. Not. Normal.

I was shocked how Sweden played yesterday, using a rather narrow, central space to move up. It’s like we could of cut 10 meters of the width of the field since either team wasn’t using it. Where was Rolfo’s brilliant wing play? Even more importantly where the heck was Sofia Jakobsson? She’s been the savior of all that is God is good in Swedish football. Personally won the match vs the over-the-hill gang at the last Olympics, how can she not be viable anymore?

I know she was an bust at Bayern Munich, but now providing great service to Alex Morgan in San Diego; with Sofia’s cross kicks have gotten quite a few times Alex on the scoreboard. Her blinding speed helps her get her double teamed, so the open Alex can score some more goals. Her ability to get fouled inside the box, so the penalty kick taker, Alex Morgan, can score upon. Yes, she’s been such an valuable asset….or at least to Alex Morgan!

Jakobsson's absence puzzles me as well -- in general she's been useful to Team Sweden, and I quite like her (Morgan notwithstanding). I'll keep an eye out for news / gossip, but with all these high-caliber forwards about... <shrug>

Speaking of high-caliber, did y'all catch that Rebecka Blomqvist was robbed of a goal by a dodgy offside call in the Switzerland game? Team Sweden has lodged an official protest with UEFA, for all the good that will do. The charge is that the VAR ref drew the offiside line on the back of the ball, not the front (=goalside), and that was the difference. That's just about as close a call as you can get.

I seem to remember to have heard somewhere that she's half-injured: if Swedish is your language, maybe this article will give you useful info. :coffee:

Not that I doubt Uefa officials and VAR and Sweden's complaints about them, but here's a picture of the VAR view of the Blomqvist goal. The red line is Blomqvist's foot; the blue is the edge of the ball furthest from the goal. Had the blue line been drawn on the other (=correct) side of the ball, she would have been on.

    Blomqvist not offside.jpeg

I've now watched the whole thing from the tv instead of the sidelines, and am amused to hear the Swedish commentator wait until 5 minutes 50 seconds into the 6 minutes extra time, with Swedish free kick right outside Switzerland's penalty area, to say "Och mycket talar nu för svensk seger..."

And speaking of seger, Caroline Seger is said to be play-able but not start-able tomorrow, as she still has a sore heel after contact during the Switzerland game.

Heresy #2 to explain the current situation (4-0 to Sweden at the 73rd): It is possible, just possible (whisper it it hushed tones) that Team Sweden plays better without starting certain players.

Bah – according to Dagens Nyheter, two players and a staff member have tested positive for coronavirus. They are not saying who, exactly, but it can't be Lindahl, Björn, or the team doctor (all of whom spoke at the press meeting today) or Eriksson (who went to the optional training session today). For everyone else, it's back to face masks while inside. I notice from the picture along with the story that the press are once again standing well away from the people they are interviewing.

Edit for clarity: the positives were antigens tests; confirmation by PCR awaits.

No additional covid positives this afternoon, and also still no word on who the affected players are, but we can also eliminate Rolfö from the list (phew), as she gave an interview. She confirms they are all paranoid (good!) and that it's back to masking all the time

considering that Belgium yesterday was led by the sometimes starter of the Bundesliga 5th best club(the goal scorer named DeCaigney) I would say Sweden’s chances of reaching The semis looked mighty fine!

Okay, and Schough isn't one of the afflicted, because she's also in the article... I mean, at least so far we've got Lindahl, Eriksson, Schough, and Rolfö, so that's one person at each position at least, starting from the back. Argh, the suspense is killing me!

Oh, nono, don't worry, if anyone can find a way to lose to Belgium, it's Sweden. The four players named above, for instance, probably could not hold out by themselves against a full 11 for 90 minutes.
