Our boys were scheduled to play tonight. Yesterday afternoon, the opposing team cancelled because of Covid. I don't know how, but our coach managed to schedule a match against the #4 team in the state (we're at #3). So on the road we go (about 2 hours from home).

I was doing the video/live stream, but the home team had an active student section. Maybe 50-75 kids. It was some kind of Hawaii/Luau theme, they had noise makers, a giant flag, and were having a good time.

Son told us after the game the student section had done their homework. During the game they yelled "Haley (his girlfriend) is cheating on you!" He said he got a kick out of it.

Pretty good to find out you're playing a different time, look up the roster, and do the research to taunt the opposition.

Oh, we scored with ~2:30 left in the game and finished 1-1.

I wish we could get some student interest in our games - so far, we've only had a handful of non-parent fans come to our home games (two so far). Student sections add so much more fun to the games.

We've had a couple (much smaller, like <12) student sections at games. I gotta give them credit, because it's obvious they know very little about soccer, but they're out there cheering on their classmates.

That active student section would be great. About half of the student-fan group at my son's school is soccer players, so there is no student section at their games. Volleyball draws a bunch (the football team hasn't played a home game yet, so we'll see about that), but students at the soccer games tend to be girlfriends and a few of the volleyball players who return the favor from their games. Otherwise, it's parents, grandparents and disinterested siblings, and only a handful of the parents know much about soccer.

We went to a college club-hockey (it's big at the local university) game a few years ago and one of the local (well-lubricated) fans went after the other team's goalie from start to finish about his girlfriend. "You'll never make her happy, you know she can do better, let her go, (whatever his name was). You know you're not good enough for her. ..."
