7 goals last year he might as well have been a defensive midfielder.

I don’t know what Malinovskyi’s deal is but he was awful at he the euros and has looked terrible for Atalanta so far this season. Kinda wonder if he was doping or something.

That is a function of advances in training/science/medicine.

Tom Brady is like 45 years old and still elite in NFL where he gets hit every day.

Lebron James is going to be 37 and is still a top 5 NBA player.

Unfair to criticize previous generations for lack of longevity when so much has improved to prevent/mitigate injury. Zaniolo done his ACL twice. A generation ago you wouldn't expect someone to return to form after that, like R9

Atalanta haven’t looked good in the first 2 games, they were extremely fortunate to win against Torino.

It was a matter of time until they scored, Empoli are cutting through them like butter.

Even if you cut off Ronaldo and Messi's careers at 29, we are still talking about a decade of nonstop domination from them both. At 29 Ronaldo had 3 CL titles and 3 ballon d'ors. At 29 Messi had 4 CL titles and 5 ballon d'ors.

Sports science definitely has been massive, no denying that, but every other player over the last 15 years have also been able to benefit from this as well, and yet no one has come even close to their level. They're aliens.

Aside from an occasional defender or GK like Zoff, Buffon, Marco Ballotta, Maldini, Vierchowod, Chiellini, Costacurta, Baresi and Tassotti, very few players can continue playing at a higher level beyond the age of 36-37.

I recall Luca Toni doing well at 37 and the same with Fabio Quagliarella. Baggio carried Brescia but had a special trainer and didn’t train with the club at the end. They were all playing on their last legs but with lesser, competitive clubs.

Even Totti’s presence at Roma in his final 3 years was becoming more of a burden than anything else and was mostly riding the bench. He and Luciano Spalletti hated each other at the end and the club finally made a decision to not sign him even though he wanted to continue on at age 41.

Ronaldo, Messi and possibly Ibrahimovic are maybe the only true exceptions of attacking players who can still play at a higher level at their age.

I don't know why anyone thought Ronaldo was the problem. Whenever he didn't play for Juve last season they were horrible. Their midfield sucks and Dybala is not a player that is capable of carrying an offense.

But huge props to Andreazzoli. He was basically living at Trigoria if I remember correctly, and has done pretty well for him self since.

Lol of course Ronaldo was a hindrance. A blessing and a curse given his goals but he set Juve back as they had to play through him. Juves strength has always been the team unit and they lost their way since the higuain signing reaching for the quick ticket to winning the cl.

Dont be jumping to such conclusions too early. Dybala is very capable of doing just that but has been out of form for a year. You dont find that overnight but we'll see come mid season. Max will work on them again but it will take time to see the Juve team unit back again.

Financially you could make some argument.

But what else are you going to do if you're Juve other than build your team around Ronaldo? Morata is an even bigger choker than Higuain, and Dybala disappears for half of Juve's games. Their midfield is terrible and their wingbacks are the only source of creating chances via crosses, which Ronaldo is still the best in the world at getting at the end of. Of course you are going to build around him in that case. Their only other bright spot is Chiesa, who worked really well last season playing off Ronaldo.

But I just don't see Morata and Dybala suddenly finally realizing their potential after years of being mediocre because a player who scored 29 goals for them last season has left. It's definitely possible Allegri still manages to **** house a scudetto this season with how open the league is, but it's not going to be pretty.

You're not looking at the bigger picture to the change in Juve policy. Higuain was the first clear change in direction. They gambled on him at 90 million. Absolutely ridiculous given his then proven track record of sucking when it counted. They badly wanted cl and thought he was the answer. Biggest issue here was the price tag though. They backed themselves into a corner and then went for broke with Ronaldo which has backfired. One cl title would have been worth it. If they waited another year and saved that initial 90 m from higuain, that money could have then been invested around Ronaldo. It would have been better but they still have lost the plot over the past few years in their policy. Dybala needs to be the heart of the attack and is a team player regards knitting play together. He needs to be given the freedom to control. Yes he has a boys mentality in many ways and needs to step up now. He is a special talent who needs that freedom and should be given it now. Time will tell but I'd say he will recover it with confidence coming from consistent game time. Ronaldo takes that away the overall team play element which has also always been Juves strong point, the "juve dna". Playing as a team across the pitch while Ronaldo needs things funneled to him in a certain way. The trade off is he is a beast but it still has set them back as a club.

Now you'll see Max reset to what Juve have always been, why he has always said to have had tension with Ronaldo from.the first year. Maybe it takes another season but we will see them recover what Juve is.
