Actually, no I've abandoned that idea now! The footage I have available isn't the clearest and the commentary is a bit out of sync too (worse for making the touches by Bergkamp/Vieira video, if not on silent, than for watching the game). Here is the game anyway, and Man Utd vs Barcelona from 98/99 is also on the channel (along with the second half of this game in part 2): Arsenal vs Barcelona 2000 1st half - video Dailymotion Maybe I will make another video soon (not today now) but I'll make a different choice if I do I think.
I've noticed this Zidane channel (although there are Gerrard videos too, plus one for Robben at Chelsea, one for Davids at Juventus, a couple of Desaiily ones and the Shevchenko vs Lazio video that's been on Youtube on other channels anyway already) has for example these performances uploaded recently: Norway 1998 Zidane vs Norge(Norway) (1998.2.25) - YouTube Man Utd 97/98 Zidane vs Man Utd (1997-98 UCL Group Stage 6R) - YouTube Germany 2001 Zidane vs Germany (2001.2.27) - YouTube
I spotted Carlito put Mbappe's video for the Barcelona game on the Mbappe thread, but I also noticed this one for Marco Veratti from the same game, showing very good all round midfield play in addition to a quality and key assist of the first goal for PSG - he didn't complete the full match but surely contributed very well till the point he came off at 3-1 up to PSG, and played like he'd theoretically have fitted well in Barcelona's famed Tiki Taka midfield from a few years ago now even it seems to me: Marco Verratti vs Barcelona - Champions League (16/02/21) : psg (reddit.com)
2001/02 https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/spielbericht/index/spielbericht/998518 https://pesstatsdatabase.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11004 FINIDI GEORGE orchestrated proceedings at Portman Road last night with a display that manager George Burley called "one of the best I have ever seen". Opta can reveal that Finidi's performance was also one of the best that the player performance statisticians have witnessed themselves. The Nigerian's brace was enough to earn him an Opta Index Score of 3,347 points, which is comfortably the highest tally in an individual match by any player so far this season and one of the best ever recorded on Opta's system. The former Real Mallorca striker ran the show in front of the adoring Town support and as you would expect from a man who can run 100 metres in under 11 seconds, he wasted no time in getting out of the blocks. George opened his Premiership account with a sweetly-struck low drive past the beleaguered Mart Poom with only 14 minutes on the clock and fired in five efforts in the first half alone - four on target. After Derby defender Brian O'Neal had seen red, George was afforded far more freedom going forward and was only denied a second goal before the break by the excellence of Estonian shot-stopper Poom, the Rams 'keeper tipping over an audacious chip by the 30-year-old. With the visitors down to ten men, George pressed on at every opportunity, embarking on 11 dribbles and runs - completing nine of them - and firing six crosses into the box. George's second goal eventually came with a quarter of an hour left on the clock, sealing the points for Burley's men. The African star showed he can use his head as well as his feet when diving to meet corner and nodding the ball past Martijn Reuser's to cap an outstanding home debut. While George's finishing ability caught the eye, his link-up play was by no means shaky. Finidi found a colleague with 87% of his passes, recording a pass completion rate of 85% in the Derby half - a full 25 percentage points up on last term's average in the Premiership. Finidi was undoubtedly the catalyst in Ipswich Town's high-tempo Destruction Derby. Burley thought that, as a team, Ipswich produced some of the best attacking play he had witnessed at the club, while Jim Smith maintained that his side had been "hammered". And Opta's stats clarify this point. Town smashed an astounding 36 efforts at goal (including blocked shots) against Derby and it is little wonder that Burley could not believe that the margin of victory was not greater. Ipswich fans will be looking forward to seeing more of their man in the forthcoming season. As Burley pointed out, Finidi has had very little preparation coming into the 2001-02 campaign and is not yet at his sharpest. Already, though, George looks as though the English game could suit his style of play. He netted just five times and completed a below-par 67% of his passes for Mallorca last term, but the signs are that he will record far more impressive figures on English soil. If he can maintain anything near this level of performance in the rest of 2001-02, George could help the Suffolk side maintain the momentum from their hugely successful Premiership campaign last year and maybe cause a few headaches in the UEFA Cup along the way.
One of the perks of watching classic football matches: being reminded that legendary players had rotten days, too. Andrea Pirlo misplaces nearly every pass in the first half. Seedorf hardly does anything productive either.— Football Arguments (@SergiXaviniesta) February 5, 2021 Typical slanted take this, by one of the trademark downgraders and downslashers of Holland players. While he is mostly right about Pirlo (until the last 15 minutes), producing the pause and assist for the opening goal, an away goal, is "not doing something productive" at all? Depends on what expectations there is, and which preconceived ideas about someone's role. https://firsttimefinish.co.uk/2021/...the-scoreline-manchester-united-3-2-ac-milan/ https://moesquare.medium.com/football-flashbacks-kaká-e8f8957c2dcc https://zuishek.medium.com/from-the-vault-ancelottis-hybrid-midfield-makes-him-dream-873e5498603a
1st October 2006 4 chances created 7 fouls won 2 dribbles completed 3 times hit the post Cristiano ronaldo singlehandedly carried the game towards Newcastle with his tireless attacking runs, creating chances at will and could've easily scored a hattrick For me easily one of his best ever performances without scoring or recording a opta assist A virtuoso performance and still only 21 years old Henry winter "In a mass display of defiance, Newcastle United's magnificent fans waved their shoes in the air at the end, but Cristiano Ronaldo had already shown them a clean pair of heels. The Portuguese flier was outstanding, creating goals and mayhem in equal measure, and driving Manchester United alongside Chelsea at the top of the Premiership. All high-speed sorcery, Ronaldo was desperately unlucky not to score, and should have got to keep the woodwork after striking it three times. It is difficult to say whether what happened in the summer was a defining moment," Sir Alex Ferguson said. "But he was marvellous today. He has been marvellous from the start of the season. He has great courage. I can see that great determination. He's got to keep working hard, which he does do. He has to improve his understanding of the game, which he is doing." The man who became infamous for a wink has turned a blind eye to all the barbs and brickbats thrown his way, including late challenges from the likes of Steven Taylor, Stephen Carr and Scott Parker. All Newcastle's cautions stemmed from fouls on the irrepressible Ronaldo There was no doubting the class of Ronaldo, who rattled the crossbar and then a post. I'd say this is probably about as good as it gets from Savicevic in his AC Milan time, representative of him on a good/great day in that period anyway, and of the player I tend to remember enjoying in terms of the touch on the ball especially (I haven't checked yet what rating he got via Vegan's thread or even if we're up to that point, but despite the hard to please Italian media as far as ratings go I'd think it might be something like a 7.5 - on my own scale and trying to take favouritism/enjoyment/appreciation out of it I'd think I'd be going at least a point more than that, probably slightly more especially if not restricted to increments of 0.5 anyway): Dejan Savicevic ● Skills ● Sampdoria 0-3 AC Milan ● Serie A 1994-95 - YouTube (For clarification in case the video gets removed in the future - it's vs Sampdoria away in 94/95!)
Actually, @ChizzyChisnall provided 1994/95 La Stampa ratings (Vegan didn't get to that season yet) and they indeed gave him a 7.5. I think his La Stampa average over the season seems like it could be the highest out of all publications (and the one or one of the ones where it is the highest of the league, albeit with injuries restricting appearance numbers as the commentator mentions in that video), even if with some grades on the low side, and for example to illustrate the point about Italian publications being hard to please he gets a 6.5 vs Fiorentina at home (game highlights from a Channel 4 programme available on Youtube that I've shared before I remember)
One of if not the most impressive debut performance for a new club that ive ever seen 1 goal+1 assist 11 dribbles completed 7 key passes 88 passes(total) 1 accurate cross 3 accurate throughballs 3 accurate long balls 129 touches https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1190743/Live/France-Ligue-1-2017-2018-Guingamp-Paris-Saint-Germain @PDG1978 How would you rate this performance out of 10
I'll give that one a look Carlito, at some point, although (and I already said it to sohel too to be honest - but I did by PM give a rating for that Maradona vs Werder Bremen performance of in the region of 8 to 8.5 due to the impressive use of the ball, and then found Big Soccer posts that showed that some Italian publications had actually gone with 6.5, but that Puck had already picked it out as an impressive performance in his view too).... ....I don't want to take too many requests or seem open to them to be sent at will, if you know what I mean (even though I know I post a lot, recently certainly, and I should take it in a positive way that guys are interested to get my takes, after seeing posts where I gave marks out of 10 in my opinion, on performances I picked out myself, mostly on this thread probably but others too).
6.5 is just too low of a score. I mean i've seen lot of ratings of those eras. It seems that , the best players such as Cruyff , Maradona , Platini etc were held to very high standard and forwards were not given that much of high ratings even (much lower than what one would expect in most cases), whereas defensive players usually got more ratings. Looking at that performance , there is no way on earth , that gets a rating of less than 7.5 imo
I do think, for Italian publications (English ones were different) it did seem to require quite substantial end product, as well as a great general display too to be up at 8.5 or 9 for an attacking player, and like you say even a 7.5 or 8 wasn't handed out easily either. I'm not really sure how much that changed though now still, for Italian publications (maybe it did as it can do over time, but I guess not completely anyway). Sometimes the result might influence individual ratings a bit too maybe. To an extent maybe watching the full game can give more context in terms of the flow of the game and the influence of the player's contributions in that respect, but yeah his touch in that game did seem consistently excellent and the use of the ball (in terms of technical delivery, and also imagination/vision) very good too.
I noticed on YouTube there is now a little bit uploaded @PDG1978 . I remember a few years ago that was not the case He is a bit like Clarence or Gini actually, I think. Of course there are differences but share many of the same features.
Yeah, a little bit similar I think yes. Maybe Wijnaldum in the middle of the other two in terms of attributes/style/role, with Winter more to the side of reliable team player, and Seedorf more to the side of producing the top quality or unexpected? Though on his best days I do think Seedorf was partly good because of consistency (within those games) too, and Winter may have been the best pure dribbler out of them, and maybe even best with volleyed shots (not sure vs Seedorf though - again it could be Winter would be more reliable on average but Seedorf potentially more spectacular with them at certain moments)?
There were some excellent individual performances this summer: Xhaka vs France. Olmo vs Croatia. Dolberg vs Wales. Szalai vs Germany. Gosens vs Portugal. Zuber vs Turkey. Locatelli vs Switzerland. De Paul vs Brazil. Dias vs Argentina and Peru Lapadula vs Paraguay. Lampe vs Chile.
I'd say similar to what I said for the Maradona performance sohel posted actually I think, 8 heading towards 8.5 probably. Maradona was in general a bit more precise with passing and a bit more imaginative in seeing passes too I think, but Neymar had an assist too (simple enough but well weighted and timed) and a similar amount of chances created and moves instigated (I say that without checking exactly). On the other hand Neymar at that moment was more physically able than Maradona at that stage of his career in terms of running and dribbling, and he had more solo incursions with the ball. He did get a goal too of course, but the fixture was an easier one for PSG than the Napoli one was for them (even though away from home). I noticed that some George Weah displays have been uploaded in relatively recent months by the way, for anyone interested: George Weah vs Spartak Moscow | Home (1994/1995) - YouTube (One of his most famous PSG ones in the European Cup, vs Spartak Moscow, featuring goals widely seen I guess but his other touches too) George Weah vs Parma 1998 -1999 Home - YouTube (A very good one from his last Scudetto winning season with AC Milan, vs Parma with Thuram etc)
@Edhardy @PDG1978 @leadleader Unreal performance pushing a 8.5/10 for me This Maradona would score very highly on Whoscoreds algorithm no doubt Not sure about the napoli episode(especially after 86) but this definitely. Check out the channel aswell for some rare performances of Rivaldo,Edgar davids,poborsky,ginola,gento..........Vinnie jones lol
@PDG1978 @leadleader advised me a month ago to watch Inter vs Sampdoria for the 1993-94 Coppa Italia (Sampdoria was the eventual winner, next to finishing 3rd in the league) for an impressive Gullit performance. Leadleader had already said this one before. Had a look at this now: I agree he played well in broad terms (as an aside; in 1994-95 he was equally productive and don't see why DBScalcio has that much lower), including a decisive goal in injury time, I'd say Lombardo caught my eye too. Maybe because of his hairstyle and his motion-style but he does have a nice directness and danger in his game here. I also think this is another Bergkamp game during his Inter years where he honestly plays quite well against a strong opponent (not quite the absolute elite here). Just as the dribble for the penalty against Juventus (played about as good as Baggio imho) and the various Milan encounters with goals and assists. If the Italians expected a player who would go for the topscorer awards - especially with Sosa also in the team - then they were mistaken (was 1994 UEFA Cup topscorer), but he was regularly decisive against this sort of teams, including more than once against Milan their legendary defense. And Inter their 1993-1995 results without him on the field were clearly a lot worse (three foreigner rule, I know). See the sequence of events between 1:15:00 and 1:16:00 for the 1-0 opener as example. Reads the play well, wins the ball back, has the vision for the free man, time for a cross, goal. Vierchowod was seriously tested at times; received his yellow in the 23th minute. The Italian commentator sounded especially enthusiastic about Jonk, but personally I liked Jugovic a bit more in this game. The Busquets of their day one might say. Safe to say this game doesn't change my general impression; Gullit and the Inter forward are broadly in the same ballpark as a player (together with five other compatriots for the places 3 to 9), with Cruijff and MvB two and one steps up. If VvD returns strong from his injury I should also think about where he goes. Whether 'the dozen for 10' is the limit or goes one level higher based on the last five years (yes you can say there isn't the same pressure for a smaller club but things like 0 errors are a very strong statistic). https://statsbomb.com/2017/07/how-do-you-scout-for-centre-backs-statistically/
Yeah, it is - late 1994 friendly. Also a Savicevic one there Dejan Savicevic ● Skills ● Brasil 2-0 Yugoslavia ● Frendly Match 23/12/1994 - YouTube I agree Puck with Jugovic having been a very useful player. Good on the ball and could contribute going forwards but also good at backing up the other midfielders and with good energy.
