I've been pretty impressed by McGlynn, actually -- has picked up a bunch of key passes and has won duels and quickly distributed pretty quickly. I admit I don't have a great eye for off-ball quality but I think McGlynn's an interesting player.

McgGlynn does look good but what is most interesting about him is that he is seems to be more of a DLP/a deeper midfield connector and we don't really play that type of midfielder. But he seems to have a lot of promise in that role.

It takes time to understand McGlynn's contribution, so I'd stress for everyone to keep watching. He's also a player that I think will need a longer adjustment period. I don't think he's been bad though so far this season. I don't think the expectations were for much more than he's done.

Aaronson was pretty quiet, although not bad, except for the goal. For a first start, that was a pretty good performance.

Sullivan had another good game. He was the most active of the younger players. With another pro season under his belt, he would've scored a goal and drawn a penalty. He missed a good chance, although Turner made a great save. Also, he could've drawn a penalty, but didn't go down.

Flach had a weaker game, but I'm not sure he's a LWB, which is the position he was playing.

Basically we're seeing what we expected from Philly this season.
Lots for us to be excited about with regards to young players and prospects for coming seasons.
They're also not as good of a team. After last night's loss, its going to be tough for them to get back into the SS race. New England just seems to "have it" this season, and are 12 points ahead of them.

MLS being what it is, Philly is only a few points from 2nd place. They're also only a few points from missing the playoffs if the teams behind them win their games in hand.

He looks to me so much like Brendan, mannerisms, style of play. Wonder how much of it is genes and how much is environmental, him emulating his big bro in the back yard.

    Nice goal btw...

Both he and Brenden have that sort of herky-jerky, violent movement that can create so much space.

I know some people said he disappeared other than the goal, but I thought he was really impressive. Philly doesn't really feed players -- they didn't feed Brenden, either, and I think Paxten could have had a much better game if they were looking for him.

    So Cal
didn't see the game, but from the highlights: quick feet, nice goal, clever eye for a pass and very direct agressive style is what comes immediately to mind. I like it.

Watched one of the reserve games recently against another MLS reserve team (Chicago Fire), which really does give us a better picture of where these younger kids level of play is at than 10 minutes every three games.

The two fullbacks (Harriel and Real) were just okay for me. Real is a pretty good passer of the ball, but you'd like to see him have more of an impact outside of passing. Harriel was quiet, which isn't a bad thing. His defending looked better than what I saw last season in USL. Freese wasn't bad either, but very little work came his way.

Craig and Turner were probably the two standouts IMO. Craig made so many clearances, and was always in the right place. He also is a great passer, and can drop passes in with different trajectories. We don't talk about him as much as we should because he's not playing first team games, but I think next season he will be playing in the first team, whether at CB or DM. Turner is probably ready for some minutes at defensive midfield, but there is a logjam at the position on the first team. I don't know that he has huge potential or is that great at anything, but he's a well-rounded #6.

I thought the slightly slower pace allowed McGlynn to have a greater impact than he's had so far in MLS. His passing is incredible to watch. I think he'll need a season or two, but once he adjusts to MLS, he will become one of the difference making midfielders within the league, and get a transfer to Europe. I was wondering how he could do as a LB. Look at Tolkin. Not that athletic (like McGlynn), but he's done well at LB this season. McGlynn could almost be a better version as a technical LB, yet McGlynn has the superior passing range, soccer IQ, and size. It might not work, but it may be worth a try.

Aaronson scored two goals. The first one was good timing to get into the box as a late runner. The second was a nice low and hard shot from right around the top of the box. I didn't think he was that involved with the game, but he took his chances well. Sullivan started pretty slow and wasted some good attacking chances, but picked it up. His soccer IQ and feel for the game around him is just tremendous. I have no clue how he knew that Aaronson was behind him for that second goal, and the ability to pull off the flick to him is why the goal happens.

Of the subs, I thought Gillman held his own. Sorenson looked like his defending still needs substantial work.

    https://www.brotherlygame.com/2021/...evelopmental-team-bridge-gap-u17-team-union-2

Known as the Union development team, the aim is to bridge the gap between the U17s and Philadelphia Union 2 and provide a place for late developers to continue to grow while finishing their studies at YSC Academy, the private school affiliated with the Union’s academy.

Philadelphia Union original and Union 2 assistant coach Fred da Silva will be the head coach of the team, which will feature players from the Union 2 group in need of minutes, players who have aged out of the U17 MLS Next team and other players from the U17 player pool.

This is a U-19 team without calling it such. It might not have stringent age requirements though.

Lots of kids started tonight. Since it is depressing to look at the table, I'll focus on what I saw from them.

We lined up in a 4-2-3-1.

McGlynn was the best of them. He was a deep midfielder next to Bedoya and he really was able to show off his passing. His left foot is something and he picked out multiple beautiful passes. It was good enough where I want to see more.

Aaronson phased in and out of the game, but when he showed up wow he looked dangerous. He has the same smooth touch and quick feet as his brother, but is already more of a factor around the box. Has two great shots that forced big saves, the second of which was a half volley he took off his chest. Also has a pretty back heel late in the game to Bedoya that was wasted (more on Bedoya later).

Sullivan was ok. He was one of the wide 3 midfielders and found space and made some good passes. Did not stick out as much as the first 2 but also looked like he belonged and contributed. He really faded as the game went on, started having some poor touches and was eventually subbed out.

Harriel got a yellow and gave up a FK that led to the goal. Had a few bobbly touches and looked unsure at times. But he showed off his athleticism and was not afraid to play forward. Combined on the right side often with Bedoya and Sullivan. Sent in a few good crosses. A mixed bag.

Turner got a 7 minute cameo too. Had a couple of touches, and sent in a low cross that went out for a corner.

All in all the kids all looked more than competent. Most of them had several dangerous moments and it was very promising.

Bedoya is also cooked so if Curtin has any sense he will be getting phased out and the kids will be getting more and more time.

Is Aaronson more #10 or #8/#10 mix?

Based on how Curtin has played him, I would say mostly 10. I don't think Aaronson 2.0 has ever played as an 8 for us.

Sullivan for example I think has come on a few times at the 8 and even second striker once or twice. Even a few times where he was a direct sub for Bedoya.

Though if you mean play style, I would also say pure 10. He is more of a traditional 10 than even Brenden, much more advanced in and around the box than Brenden ever was for us.

I don't think your descriptions are off, but I would flip how I thought McGlynn and Sullivan played.

McGlynn was the worst of the American CM's IMO just because he had so little involvement. The passes when played them looked like Beckham, but when he wasn't doing that, what was he doing? He didn't have enough of those passes either. I think he's starting to look better at the MLS level, but he still doesn't have enough involvement in the game and is weak off the ball. He needs to learn to have more involvement without a lot of time and space, and he needs to start making reads like he did in USL. Right now, he's reading the game too slow and he doesn't have any involvement on the ball without significant time and space.

Sullivan had more involvement. I thought he was finding good spaces, and making good decisions with the ball. I think I might've said a season ago that McGlynn's soccer IQ is as good (or better than) Sullivan's (and both better than Aaronson), but I think Sullivan has the best soccer IQ due to how well he's adapted to the pace of the game in MLS. He's constantly involved, makes good decisions with the ball, and seems to find his way out of trouble, and into the right passing option. Aaronson and McGlynn both drift in and out of games, and pop up with moments of quality. Sullivan is a year younger, and shows more minute to minute involvement. Not enough involvement though in and around the box in this game. His contributions were more in the third quadrant. I don't know if that was what the formation asked of him (and he also was asked to play RB late on), but he didn't create many attacking chances.

I agree about Aaronson, and thats what I've observed from his appearances so far this season. He's able to pop up with some good offensive plays, but doesn't yet add much off the ball or with movement, checking to the ball. Also, I thought Harriel wasn't bad. Better than I expected. Flach wasn't bad either, although #4 was yelling at him for being at fault for the goal. I thought #4 was the one at fault, so I found that funny.

You never liked Aaronson and were very sceptical about his MLS chances, what isn't that surprising as you never liked his brother either. So I'l take all that IQ talk, with deep suspition, and just as an attempt to justify your original opinion.

Were you not asking someone else a few posts up what position he plays? It doesn’t seem like you know much about him. You seem to like him because his brother plays for the National Team, and don’t have much interest otherwise in what these players show when they play.

For the record, I don’t dislike Aaronson. I have never said that. I do however think there are too many who believe that he’s Brenden 2.0, which is very flawed. He should be judged independent of his brother.
