Games should be starting pretty soon.

This thread is for the 01's, 02's and 03's that are playing college soccer this season. There might be one or two 04's that graduated a year early, but that rarely happens, so there also might be none.

This is the update from the previously unsigned at the pro level 03's from the post I made here in June. https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/y...-2020-21-thread.2113572/page-17#post-39626542

Expected: Listed on the roster for the upcoming season.

    Sam Sarver (Indiana)
    Fabrizio Bernal (Xavier)
    Matthew Roou (Notre Dame)
    Andrew Cordes (Portland)
    Boima Cummins (Wake Forest)
    Sebastian Nava (Portland)
    Eliot Jones (Stanford)
    Will Watson (Princeton)
    Mitch Budler (Akron)
    Caden Stafford (Maryland)
    Matthew Edwards (UNC)
    Gavin Krenecki (Louisville)
    Benjamin Joseph Do (Penn)

    Unknown:

    Tarun Karumanchi (UCLA commit)
Anthony Hernandez (I can't find if or where he committed to play college soccer)
Andrew Durkin (I can't find if or where he committed to play college soccer)
Jalen Calloway (I can't find if or where he committed to play college soccer)

Not Expected: These players either are not listed on the roster of the college they committed to or didn't even commit to college.

    Elton Chifamba
    Alejandro Alvarado
    Mauricio Cuevas
    Noah Hall
Dairon Reyes (he's also not eligible for the USMNT anymore, so its a moot point for the purposes of this thread)
Juston Rainey (class of 2022 high school graduate)
    Daniel Edelman

Already signed: These players have already signed a pro contract or it's publicly reported they will soon.

    Jonathan Gomez (Real Sociedad)
    Anton Sorenson (Philadelphia Union)
Hikaru Fujiwara (New England Revolution II)

    Additional Notable 03's:

    Charles Gaffney (Penn)
    Andrew McGee (Cal Poly)
    Dante Huckaby (Louisville)
    Tega Ikoba (UNC)
    Isaac Acevedo (Texas Rio Grande-Valley)
    James Wangsness (Princeton)
    Joseph Zalinsky (Rutgers)
    Prince Amponsah (Wake Forest)
    Kyle Genenbacher (Notre Dame)
    Connor Gramke (Tulsa)
    Kobey Stoup (Air Force)
    Sebastian Hernandez (Portland)
    Nicholas Pariano (Duke)

    A few notes:

I've heard from many sources that Sarver is no longer affiliated with the Crew academy. It's not a secret anymore, so I'm not breaking big news about this. I don't know if they will still be given credit for having his HG rights anymore, but I suspect he will end up as a GA signing and play for another MLS team.

Bernal is listed on the Xavier website as Fabrizio Bernal de la Garza. I've not seen him listed anywhere with the elongated name last name. It also says that he grew up in Mexico, and spent time in the Pumas and Monterrey academies. He's been in USYNT camps before, but that also doesn't guarantee that he's a citizen.

Some further notable information gleaned from these rosters. Sarver is listed at 5'9. Bernal is listed at 5'10. Roou is listed at 5'10. Cordes is listed at 6'1. Cummins is listed at 5'10. Jones is listed at 6'2. Watson is listed at 6'5 (215). Krenecki is listed at 6'0. Mitchell is listed at 6'2.

The 03's are a very talented age group, so we should expect more initial impact from this age group in college soccer than most age groups. A few of them have had a head start in college soccer (Jones, Pariano).

A list of 02's and 01's that could also be relevant players this season. This list is compiled from names I recognized on rosters and names I had on lists I made of the top 01's and 02's from prior years. I don't watch much college soccer, so I don't have a good grasp on if this would accurately reflect who will be the best in college soccer this season.

    02s:

    Conner Maurer (Stanford
    Will Reilly (Stanford)
    Josh Ramsey (Notre Dame)
    Dyson Clapier (Akron)
    Josue Hangi (Akron)
Aaron Edwards (UCLA commit, but no UCLA roster yet)
Jason Bucknor (Michigan commit, but no Michigan roster yet)
    Jahlane Forbes (Wake Forest)
    Cristian Escribano (Wake Forest)
    Garrison Tubbs (Wake Forest)
    Max Trejo (Ohio State)
    Jansen Miller (Xavier)
    Joe Suchecki (Maryland)
    Gaetano D'Argento (Bowling Green)
    Bryan Dowd (Notre Dame)
    Julian Kennedy (Wake Forest)
    Ben Martino (Virginia Tech)
    Kaya Ignacio (Virginia)
    Chris Edwards (Yale)
    Peter Stroud (Duke)
    Julian Anderson (Viriginia)
    JT Harms (Duke)
    Kenneth Nielsen (Georgetown)
    Kyle Linhares (Georgtown)
    Bailey Sparks (SMU)
    Carson Klein (Cal Poly)

    Takuma Suzuki (Wake Forest)
    Nico Benalcazar (Wake Forest)
    Cameron Fisher (UNC)
    Carter Payne (Michigan)

I seem to remember Durkin committing to a service academy but I can not find it anywhere. Clemson hasn't updated their roster to include any new recruits yet so I'd hold your horses on Chifamba for the moment. Cuevas and Edelman have already signed pro deals.

I can verify for your crew players. Anthony Hernandez and Noah Hall are playing with the Crew u23’s this fall. Elton Chifamba is playing at Clemson this fall. Sarver did leave the club but I won’t go into any further semantics, 5’9 is accurate for his height though.

Rumors have been picking up for both Mauricio Cuevas and Alex Alvarado but until there’s confirmed movement I shouldn’t say anything publicly

It looks like you're right, although he's not yet signed to a first team deal. I read an article from last September where his father talked about the choice Edelman has to make. Does a USL deal take players out of contention to play college soccer? How do the new NCAA rules effect that? I don't think he's a player thats very likely at this point though to ever reach UNC. He's probably going to get a first team contract before next season.

This says 21-22. I was going off of this, but if you are correct that they will include the new recruits later, it may be inaccurate.

If anyone notices anything I've said thats wrong, please mention it. We want the most accurate information. I tried to go through these rosters as quick as possible to list some names to watch out for, but there may be an error or two.

A pro USL deal renders a player ineligible for NCAA soccer. Players who participate in USL games on amateur "USL Academy" deals maintain their eligibility.

Edelman is on a pro deal, so NCAA is off the table for him.

I wonder if there would be a way for USL teams to offer financial aide scholarships so that players could be eligible for both. An educational trust or something like that.

Many teams do offer education funds for players who go pro so that they can get their degree if their soccer career fizzles (or even if it doesn't). They can't play NCAA soccer while doing so.

The NCAA would have zero incentive to bend their rules for a non-revenue sport like soccer.

Just finished watching the Stanford @ SMU game. Sparks and JP Jordan were both impact players, pretty much behind only Gabby Costa and (maybe) the new SMU LWB from Frankfurt, Pinho. Both look like they're going to be GA-type guys sooner than later.

Kendall Edwards played ~ 15 mins against USC Upstate last night. Luke Hillie played well, scored a goal from ~20 yards out.

Lets back up a little. 1 college game played and you are crowning them GA players? Sparks didnt even start. Defense had a solid showing all together. Defense outplayed Stanford in the air except for one corner where the tallest SMU player (attacker) lost his man.

I agree its early days but Bailey looked to be the smoothest attacking player on the field. Was very involved in the game and created chances. I have a feeling he just dropped the SMU player that started in front of him to the bench,

Hillie had 2 last night. 3 goals in 2 games thus far against halfway decent competition; not ACC sides but Big South sides that finished in the top half last season.

Unusual scenes just now on ESPN+ with St. Joseph's up 1-0 after about 30 minutes on host UNC-Greensboro. Just watched a ref pull a red card on a guy and then, after maybe 10 minutes or so, appear to change his mind -- the broadcasters don't seem to know what's up, so maybe the scorekeeper will explain it at halftime. (Currently, the crew is giving an update on the Argentina-Brazil madness.) St. Joe's looks pretty decent for a winless team on the road and generally speaking, both teams are trying to play some ball. UNCG apparently has a French sophomore who has been putting up big numbers but I haven't heard his name called much.

Apparently, in case you're dying to know, he showed the card to the wrong guy, and then fixed it after some conversation.

Chifamba has played 109 minutes over 4 games for Clemson. Clemson has won those games 15-1 combined and only the first game was close. No goals or assists yet.

Looks to be a reserve off the bench this year, but a lot can change as the season progresses. ACC play starts this week, so big step-up in competition.

College Soccer now is primarily dominated by older foreign players, so that puts the US players at a disadvantage. A lot of the foreign players are 19 or 20 as FR versus 18 or 19.

Does anyone have any idea who have been some of the best performers so far among thread-eligible players?

I've looked a at a few teams stats so far, and it doesn't seem like many of the Freshmen are playing many minutes and having a big impact yet. It may be expected that 18 year old freshmen will take a month or two to start becoming impact players in starting roles.
