Whatever she tries to build makes Takakura look plain silly at the end of the day. It has been like that ever since she took over the senior side. Whatever she did at junior level is obviously not working at senior level. Whether that's the personal approach with players or the tactical schemes, I can't tell. Forcefeeding is not a way to do things well.

It's one thing to have Sawa and Ando calling people out, but Takakura should feel lucky that none of the big names in Japanese men's football like Shunsuke Nakamura have gone with his own grain of salt just yet because that could turn really ugly in the public arena if one of them did. At least, she has not met Roy Keane. Do me a favour.

Probably it works only for South America, a VPN should work.

Edit: I'm in Chile and the commentary sound Mexican if you know why this is relevant ;). The youtube Channel Marca Claro has full matches to watch and a lot of events live. I was watching the first 20 minutes of Brazil-Germany live before going to work.

Just a little nitpicking pet peeve of mine, don't mind me...
To me out of all these numbers the only actually relevant one is shots on goal, and its ratio to the actual goals. You want as many shots on goal as possible to even have a chance at scoring. But you also want good quality shots for a higher probability of scoring. Canada scored 100% of its shots on goal, Japan 33%. ;)

    Yes... :)
...though Canada last shot on goal was 6 minutes after kick-off ;)

Canada strategy was rather obvious - score a goal and then defend three points.
It didn't work but neither did Japan's plan to keep the clean sheet.

Great! I am traveling in South America now and have no problem with the video. Thanks a lot!

A match with GB will be 5:30 in the morning here. A little tough.

Thanks to Lechus7 I was finally able to watch the match against Canada. And I have to say people that it really was not as bad as you all seemed to imply. Maybe it was my low expectations which have clouded my judgement, but I think maybe not.

I want to stress that Nadeshiko could have played a lot better, but there were still some positives to take away.

I thought Shiokoshi on the right was the one bright spot in the first half, which is good going forward, because she can also play on the left. I liked that when Shiokoshi came off they switched Hasegawa to the right.

Hasegawa was basically cut out of the game by Canada's right back Ashley Lawrence who was probably the best player on the pitch in my opinion; good player. She continued to nullify Endo as well.

The key was that they switched Hasegawa to the right and she started to come into the game a lot more, which in turn meant that Nadeshiko played better. Sugita also coming on made a huge difference.

Miura was good in midfield, Nakajima less so. Shimizu was good and both Kumagai and Minami were fine in defence. Defensively I thought Nadeshiko were pretty good. Going forward was the problem, which I thought would be the opposite of their problems if that makes sense?

Iwabuchi and Sugasawa did not see much of the ball so it is hard to be too critical of them. Though I am not really convinced by Sugasawa at international level.

Now for the bad. Ikeda and Kitamura were both poor. Poor old Kitamura could barely make a pass and was really at fault for the first goal in my opinion. Ikeda, although very good with her feet is so shaky in the air. She really does not instil confidence. I am going to assume that neither of these two will play today against GB. I could be wrong, because Takakura may double down on them.

In the first half Nadeshiko really did not string a lot of passes together and at times it was a little frustrating. They went down a goal early and it seemed as if they were trying to force the play too much with speculative passes to the forwards. They would pass the ball four or five times and then try a through ball over the top where maybe just holding onto the ball would have been better. But it is all about confidence.

The long balls to the forwards reminded me of 2018. It was like they were lobbing the ball forward and then hoping they would pick up the second ball. This is not good football and Ando and Sawa were right to crtiticise Nadeshiko for their style of play.

I think they were also right about the lack of pressure in midfield. There really were very few steals from the midfield. It did happen once in the second half and it led to a nice shot on goal by Tanaka, even though she did handball.

In the end it was not too bad and a draw is not a bad result. I am pretty sure they will lose to GB, but they still have a chance.

I think the one major change I would make is put Sugita in midfield. I just think her dribbling and technique gives Nadeshiko more options going forward.

Anyway, I am looking forward to the game tonight, though I expect them to lose. As long as Nadeshiko beat Chile they will go through.

During BBC TV live coverage of opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympic Games yesterday a Japanese commentator was featured and mentioned the viewing figures in Japan for the Canada v Japan womens football match....30 million

(the first time I watched the Tokyo Olympic games on TV the pictures were pretty poor quality and in black and white..my my how time flies)

    Japan v GB
If Takakura san does nothing else I hope she will at least restore the best centre midfield partnership we have.... Miura/Sugita.
I wont state the obvious that Yamashita needs to be in goal.
(This particular household will erupt if we beat them 2-1 with Iwabuchi and Sugita scoring the goals but that may just be wishful thinking)

Hi guys, I have big problems with my domestic connection. I hope I'll be able to connect for the game later, but I could be less active than usual today and in the next days, if I don't manage to fix the situation.

Today is going to be a very difficult match (I am persuaded that we've really got the short end of the stick by being drawn into this group), but I think that at least tying the game could be in our reach. We're going to see. For sure it would have been much easier if we had beaten Canada.

    No Iwabuchi? What the....????

What does it mean, that we take this game as lost already so we manage our star-player's minutes for the next one???:confused::confused:

It doesn't make any sense at all. You have one absolut top-player and you take her out for the toughest group-game of our campaign, vs what's most probably our strongest opponent?

I swear I can't just figure out Takakura anymore: ok, Yamashita is back where she belongs, and Hayashi is an understandable move, but why playing Nakajima as a Holding Midfielder again? If you want to play Sugita, why not exchanging Sugita's and Nakajima's places?

Also, no Miura is not going to make @Twistal happy! ;)

Saying that I am perplexed is an understatement.

Having said that, any links for the game?

Iwabuchi rarely ever plays the whole 90mins and she was forced to in the Canada game. I'm pretty sure she needs the break. We'll probably see her in the second half though.

Yamashita is hands down our best GK, but I never particularly like her distribution with her feet.

Hayashi's shot was well wide, but, remembering her performances in Sweden league, I've got the feeling that her middle-range shot could be a reliable weapon today. Or at least I hope so.

Of course what I said about Hayashi is part of Takakura's plan: Nakajima's pass to her for the middle-range shot was very telling. This time it was framed, but it was central and easily saved.

Remember, you hear that for the first time from me right now: third time is the charme. After this target practice, Hayashi will score with her third shot! ;)
