I love seeing other countries play attacking creative football. Even if it means we lose. It’s been a joy to watch Sweden and Netherlands etc improve and develop. I hate our roster and hate our lineup and hate the way our federation is run. I’m cheering for us and am not happy we lost (and fully know we will still win it all because soccer isn’t just and we have so much depth). But I’d love for the progress of other countries playing attractive thoughtful styles to shove us out of our comfort zone. We have creative and tactical players and a ton of talent. We will be fine. But I do love when other countries play well against us and don’t shrink in the moment of playing us. We will be better for it.
You should be hating the coach because he chose this line up hes the one that didnt change tactics. Its all on the coach dont go blaming the players or the federation because this same group won in 2019.
Not yet. However the writing is on the wall. But thank you for remembering. But I really take no joy in being even close to being right as I actually hoped I was wrong and I still could be.
Meaningless, as that was just a friendly. But I guess we can only judge by friendlies as there are virtually no meaningful matches to be had for women's national teams outside of Europe (Euros) other than the WWCs and Olympics. No place else is there enough good teams to even hold a tournament that is not pretty much preordained which two teams will play in the finals.
Yeah, she was arguably the defender beaten. But all 3 were from crosses into the 6 yard box. It's pretty rudimentary soccer, that the keeper needs to get to crosses in the 6 yard box. As a matter of fact, it's quite often argued that the keeper should get to crosses midway between the 6 yard box and the penalty spot. Our keeper didn't get close to any of them. It's an issue with a team as tall and as good in the air as Sweden. And while we're passing out blame, the crosses were not pressured either, the corner excepted obviously.
Vlatko stands out as the one lacking. He didn’t have anything devised to stop the onslaught, Sweden pretty much did what they want when they wanted it…the flipping WHOLE game! Blaming Press, Heath, Rapinoe? Even Naeher? nah…someone even said that Lavelle seemed frustrated at her teammates. She looked liked a kid at the adult’s table, on and off the ball. Almost everyone looked like they were stunned after the first goal, playing purely on instinct—not a system—after that as things just snowballed. Rant done. Organize this team, Vlatko. More games to come!
Yes it is. But it can be done so because they win. I disagree with this. The 2015/19 teams were better than the competition across the board. Obviously there are individuals who are brilliant from other countries, but as a team, the US has had better talent than anybody else in those tournaments. The same comment was made for much of the time between 2000 and 2015, that the world will and had caught up. Just like then, there are great players, but they are ageing out of the system with equivalent talent not able to replace them. We are just arrogant enough to think we will win just because we have in the past. There has actually be parity at the top since 1999, it just happens that we had a dominate group of players come through together. Seriously, how long has the convo been about who will replace somebody like Ertz? Who is equivalent talent? Further, who can dribble and cross like Heath? Who is there to be able to replace Sauerbrunn? I think Morgan has been looking somewhat lethargic for the past few months, but who is there to replace her consistency? Who is there to replace Rapinoe as player and as captain? To me Vlad was stuck picking known entities who are older and/or injured, or newer and less proven players. Personally, I'd rather him have taken than the latter, the younger players, but he saw what he saw and there is no denying the pedigree of the players he picked.
Last friendly Sweden played with an 3-back & none of those 3 CB's were on the squad today! Sweden vs. United States - 10 April 2021 - Women Soccerway missing Sembrant, Fisher, Erickson, but Ilesteadt proved more than enough in their place even though she's just plays FB for Bayern Munich. and how many times got to mention Jakobsson is simply the most underrated, if not arguably the fastest player in the world today! Can't wait to see her play for Bayern Munich alongside Glas this upcoming season
Ultimately, you have to win the trophy to be considered a legit competition. If Sweden wins the gold then the USWNT will now have a tangible rivalry going forward. Next world cup is just around the corner.
FWIW: I was wrong about Peacock as they seemed to have nothing live and little else. However I was also wrong about NBC not getting replays up in good time. Today, when I first checked, about 12:30 EDT, all this morning's matches were up and viewable on the NBC app. If I had been sure this would be the case I could have saved myself a lot of worry. I really seem to need none of the backup viewing methods I arranged for myself. However the ease of viewing will be lost on me if the US does not right the ship before it sinks. (I made a typo in that and my spell checker suggested "stinks" and I almost accepted that suggestion.) The match did somewhat "stink" but it does not, yet, resemble the odor of a "corpse flower."
When I think about how rich the talent pool is at winger, it makes me wonder why Reyna can’t get a look at the 8/10 slot. He has said to everyone who will listen that he sees himself as a 10 and is comfortable in the center. With KDLF, Weah, Pulisic, Aaronson, and even a recovered Morris, why do we stick Reyna at the wing? Indeed, why does GB look for “the best player to fill each role in his system” rather than look at his squad and chose formations and styles that maximize the value of what we have in the talent pool?
What??? I believe this is the US women's soccer forum. Of course you could be saying that all those players play like "girls" and, therefore, should be elegible to play for the USWNT. One of the worst insults I could give to one of U12 girl's teams I coached was to say that they were "playing like girls."
I'll try to catch up on post reading but man, the US Team had some bad play by individuals, and some poor choices on forwards and 1 particular midfield spot to start with. Didn't think I would miss Ertz as much as I thought, but man what a difference between her and Horan in that holding spot. Terrible game by Dunn... Worst game I've seen her play in years... That pass to the Swede at the top of the box from the wing left me speechless. Loved the Swede's Smart D by their forwards shading to Abby's side all match long, making the attack run through Brunn. In fact, kept the attack to Brunn's side all game long. The entire team was out of sorts passing. Really hard to fault any one player but things looked a lot better once the old ladies came in. Didn't amount to anything, but to the eye, it looked better. I'll read through everything later and respond as appropriate.
Yes, she did look fit. I don't know how she felt, but I like what I saw. Seemed to be playing like her old self.
Some nice Twitter clips analyzing the goals -> Thought I would do a little analysis of what exactly happened today from 3:30am CT on. I obviously have no idea of how Vlatko is teaching the game, so these clips are framed within our game model lens at @IlliniSoccer #Tokyo2020 #USAvSWE pic.twitter.com/DMIFRze9xw— Lisa Lubke (@LisaLubke) July 21, 2021
When I saw that I quickly jumped to "Vlad the Impaler" or the "real" Dracula. That would really be a scary name/label for a coach.
Hit the "d" and not the "t". I'm also a "Vlad [something]" on another forum as well. So it sometimes is automotic.
