APOEL and Omonia are the two big Nicosia clubs, separated over politics more than religion or ethnicity (both are Greek people, both are Christian Orthodox). After WW2 APOEL was the team of the pro-Western movement, and Omonia was the team of the Communists. Up to now they're still the right-wing and left-wing clubs, respectively.
Since the United States is such a large country geographically--compared to the average European country--I think MLS more or less follows the general schema of other American sports of being tribal along the lines of regionalism. Just a quick anecdote, before Philly had a club in MLS I gathered together with a band of soccer supporters from the Philly area to attend a New York Red Bulls match against Kansas City--just to loudly root against New York because we're neighboring and rival regions in so many other sports (in addition to making it known we wanted our own club in Philly).
