    Why shall a GB/Ireland or Spain/Portugal bid have a notch over Serbia/Greece/Bulgaria/Romania.

FIFA could make much more money in a region where stadium and other infrastructure needs to be improved or built anew than with existing ones that have it all.

also i would like to see a WC in a place that has not hosted before.

That was an easier argument to make when it was just the FIFA Council voting... but is a southeastern European bid going to be able to win votes worldwide over better-known western European counterparts?

But the Great Britain Ireland joint bid is still yet to be officially confirmed as an official bid being put forth whereas the Serbia/Greece/Bulgaria/Romania bid is actually a confirmed bid

Overwhelmed police trying to prevent ticketless fans from entering Wembley...

The semi-finals and final of Euro 2020 are making news for all the wrong reasons.

Has a potential UK/Ireland bid been damaged beyond repair before a bid has even been placed?

It could have been damaged a bit but it is still Europe and they can put on a better show and have better infrastructure than South America.

Maybe Spain-Portugal benefits the most but England has waited a lot longer than Spain to host this thing again.

Wembley always has issues. It's built for huge crowds, and ultimately the coattails will be rode if England made a final. Sadly, it's in the mindset of some British people, that a big event means you can act like an idiot.

I attended 4 games at the Euros, and by large i shared drinks with Danish and German fans, an the experience was very, very positive. But the message to warn about touts, had a negative effect. I spoke with many fans who hadn't even considered it, but saw the reports, and they suddenly wanted to.

It's a small minority, and I didn't see any trouble. I saw young families keen to see history, and drunk, yet mostly respectful fans, having a nice time.

Ultimately, I go because I love football, and if my experience works best in Spain/Portugal, then sign me up for that, because I want the best experience.

With the Copa América almost cancelled weeks before its start, I seriously doubt that we will get voted. But one can always hope...

Just seems almost impossible for Uru-Arg-whoever in just 9 years to come up with a good plan and execute it. Way sooner than that to present the plan to FIFA. Especially since the pandemic has long lasting effects when compared to other Bids.

I think it will be in Europe or they will shoehorn it into China somehow.

It will be interesting if the UK and Iberian bids go head-to-head on the day of the vote.

What is virtually assured is that 2030 will be a European WC.

I think you may struggle. I'd like to think a worldwide pandemic, causing Argentina to withdraw as hosts would not be a reason to penalise.

I would like you to get it, would be a tremendous tournament, but as of now, given the depths of a pandemic, and lacking the required Stadia across all 4 nations, could it be too much, too soon?

Spain for example will have 2 stadia in Madrid, Sevilla, 1 in Barcelona, Bilbao, San Sebastian.

Portugal still has facilities from Euro2004.

The UK, everything will be forgotten in a few weeks (it shouldn't be!), and i'm sure it'll come down to the Iberian/UK bid. I'd enjoy an Iberian one.

An Iberian joint World Cup would be way better for 2030

Matt Slater from the Athletic reporting on a 2030 joint Italy-Saudi Arabia bid. When I saw the headline I thought, this is preposterous, but maybe not so. Slater also talks a lot about the hit the joint UK bid took after the goings on at Wembley at the Euro Final.

Seems next to impossible there can be a second Middle Eastern bid after Qatar in 2022 but he says the bids being considered in addition to the Saudi-Italy one is one where the "Saudis team up with Egypt and Morocco to make a “MENA bid” (Middle East and North Africa), which would theoretically unite the African and Asian football confederations."

Sorry that this is behind a paywall for some (IMO this site is worth the $1/month), but I can't find the story elsewhere with this much detail.

I thought intercontinental bids were banned?

What would stop Spain, Morocco and Portugal going together in that case?

The snippet which excites me no less is this…

“It must also hope that the likes of Italy or Spain and Portugal can be persuaded to go for a clearer run at Euro 2028 than what will be a long campaign against strong challenges from elsewhere, some with much deeper pockets than the football associations of these island”.

Either way, looks like we’ll finally get a Spanish major tournament after all these years.

I don't believe that's the case, officially anyway. Can someone out there confirm one way or the other?

I would like nothing better. And for me adding Portugal would just sweeten the deal. And at this still early point it does like like the Iberian bid is pulling ahead by a bit. But a long ways to go still.

The article also says this: On Thursday, the president of the Italian football federation, Gabriele Gravina, told a news conference that Italy “will evaluate an Italian candidacy for the 2028 European Championship and the World Cup of 2030”. A 2028 Euro and a Spain/Portugal WC30 would make for a terrific doubleheader!

If so, then I’d love a Spain, Morocco, Portugal (which probably isn’t on the table).

Either way, if it’s España/Portugal 2028, and we’re in the sun, watching football every day for a month, perfect.

The UK is garbage. But Saudi/Italy is just stupid, surely lessons should be learned from Baku/Rome etc in Euro2020.

It would be quite funny if Saudi Arabia gets to host games and force women fans to dress modestly (no bikini tops and short- shorts at matches I imagine.) FIFA loves that sort of humans rights thing I guess---- as Mexican fans would be like WTF FIFA??????:ROFLMAO:

The Copa might've been pulled from Colombia even without COVID.

Unfortunately, South America makes very little sense for 2030. Even if they had the stadiums and there wasn't the cancellation possibility, it is not even their turn. Has to be Asia and Europe before CONMEBOL gets another WC. And arguably Africa before them too.

I don't think this thing about being any federation's "turn" is as big a deal as it used to be. But even so, why do you say Europe and Asia should be before South America for 2030? If it's by turns, then it's CONMEBOL's (or Africa's) turn.

    2014: South America
    2018: Europe
    2022: Asia
    2026: North America
    2030: ???

Give 2030 WC to Argentina, and move the final match to Spain. You know, Libertadores-2018 style.

Conmebol would love to delegate such responsibility, while keeping control of ticket distribution. Gotta love those guys.

D'oh! Forgot that China and other far-east countries are screwed since AFC is hosting in 2022, even though Qatar is 6000 km from China.

Europe is a bit of an exception because of the sheer number of countries that are capable of hosting or co-hosting a WC fairly easily in that region. So after 2 WC's outside of Europe, they become eligible to host another. Perhaps "eligible" is not the best word because these aren't hard rules, but in practice there is some degree of 'taking turns' happening.

To me, it still feels a bit too soon for South America to get another WC. A Latin American country co-hosting the 2026 WC probably doesn't help either.
