    If they equalize.

If not, I think Hungary edges Finland for the last 3rd place team on goals scored.

    EDIT: So much for that.

Google is saying Germany is second in the group. Do they go by head to head?

A Brazilian pass outside the box hits the ref. The ref doesn't blow the play. Colombian players let up. The ball rebounds in the direction of where the ball came from (the opposite of where the ball was headed) and Brazil continues a play (two passes) and score. The play should have been dead. There was a lot of arguing about the call. It obviously went to VAR as the Colombian players were arguing with the ref. The center never looked at video, but the process took about 8 minutes. It's another situation where the ref can be defended since he didn't blow the whistle as he should have. Brazil then got a goal to win in the 10th minute of stoppage.

Interesting thing -- I am not sure if the directive is to blow it dead if the pass results in a turnover, or any time it hits the ref. I THOUGHT it was the former, which would mean the play was fine, assuming it WAS a Brazilian pass that hit the ref.

The problem was it created a "promising attack." He was about to blow the whistle, but then he showed an advantage. It was a mess and there was likely no way out for VAR.

What an AWFUL play frrom Salt Lake. Why did the defender play the ball back into his own box?

Couldn't it be argued Brazil was already in the midst of a promising attack? Regardless, that rule is nebulous at best and probably needs to be updated.

UEFA has abolished the away goals rule in the UCL and EL.

I always thought the rule was that the ref was just part of the game, like a goal post. If it hits him, it hits him, and you play on come what may. Was that an old rule? Or never actually the rule?

It was, yes. But a new directive came into play sometime in the last year or so.

Possibly once up on a time the ball hit the ref and it led to a goal, so they introduced a bounce up which it turns out is far more controversial.

Edited: by bounce up I mean dropped ball. Bounce up is an archaic term the English used to use when it was still acceptable to refer to football as soccer.

Interesting. Because if the rule is now that a ball that hits the ref is a dead ball, as a defender, I know where I'm aiming if I'm in trouble and I have a chance.

That was done MLS quality defending by Wales (based on the Inter Miami - Orlando highlights I just watched).

When a PBP person drops a line like "Danish deeds of derring-do" you have to figure it was practiced. Maybe not as practiced as ol' Jack Edwards with his "Mine eyes have seen the glory" line, but it doesn't seem off the cuff.

A good line though, and delivered well. Great goal too.
