They would have had to put Brasil in the same Group as Argentina and Uruguay.\(Never going to happen.)
I should have clarified, I had heard that they wanted to not host the whole thing but part of it while Argentina hosts the other part of it. That would have meant Brasil or Colombia going into Argentina's Group.
Ah, ok. I guess Chile could also have swapped groups with Peru but it would have made the group names a bit farcical.
For a virus with a 99.7% survival rate for the non-elderly? Good luck in the Copa. It'll be a fun tournament.
Stop parading around the survival/death rate argument. It's a highly contagious virus that can overwhelmed hospitals quick. The death rate as a small number doesn't matter until you realize it's a highly contagious virus can spread quickly in populations of millions. The point to minimize spread to avoid overwhelming hospitals and creating variants that set back public health goals. Having it in a country that currently has one of the worst COVID responses and statistics doesn't really make much sense. I'm sorry if you feel like it should wash over everyone because of whatever news or opinion source you have says so and presents the stats to fit their agenda, but no. Whatever it's done copa is continuing on, let's hope it doesn't make things worse.
Possibility of CA making things any worse in a substantial scale is minimal to none given the current environment in Brazil where domestic and continental football hasn't stopped and agglomerations still occur for one reason or another.
Everything you say is right but this copa won't have any incidence in Brazil's covid numbers. It's just 500 or so people (many of them vaccinated) that will stay locked up in their camps and will only have contact between themselves when they go to play games.
14 Venezuelans (players, coaching staff; no names have been released) tested positive for Covid-19 today. No word yet if the game against Brazil tomorrow will happen.
So we have a higher rate of positive tests in international tournaments than domestic football ? Where in international tournaments players are actually more limited in their activities ? Something is off.
Depends on a number of other things. For e.g. did players quarantine before joining their NT camp? If not, then this is not remotely surprising. 50 random dudes coming from a COVID hotbed meet, hug, etc. in another COVID hotbed. Only takes one …
Seems the Brazil x Venezuela match is going ahead. But Venezuela called in 15 additional players making the match a bit of a farce, if not the entire group stage (the ither four teams only need to beat Venezuela B team to advance to the quarterfinals).
The Uruguayan team traveled between both hotbeds (VEN and BRA), and has zero cases. Apparently, someone faked several PCR tests in VEN, and were caught upon entry to BRA. That is how you have 10+ players quarantined in a Brazilian hotel, plus 3 players quarantined in VEN. VEN's coach said yesterday in press conference that his team has not trained since arriving in BRA. He plans to line up players who never trained with the men's national team. This is more Venezuelan federation's ineptitude, who had gov't acolytes visiting the players' quarters after their match with URU. That did not stop politicians from traveling with that team to BRA: 52-strong delegation arrived in BRA, including 25 players.
Not sure how that is relevant. Anyway, Bolivia with 4 positive cases. Seems the 8 quarterfinalists are basically known already.
Really disappointed that the players didn't stand up for themselves and boycott the tournament. No wonder the players get walked all over by both their clubs and countries....
Well....the format was stupid to start with.....playing four group matches over five match days just to eliminate the two worst team.....it's the TV broadcasters talking....
I mean, if you want your team to not be allowed to play anything for the next 5 years, that's up to them. FIFA won't forgive teams that boycott anything I'm afraid.
Baloney.....the players are FIFA's "product". People pay to see the players play.... Can you imagine FIFA banning Messi, Neymar, etc. from WC 2022 because they refused to play the Copa America in a COVID-19 infested country? FIFA would be shooting themselves in the foot....
FIFA already suspended Messi a few matches for the last Copa America, and they would have no choice but impose their authority. Or they lose money by losing control or lose money by losing a few players.
