The problem is that Germany have to defend against sharp counters on the flanks, but also prevent Griezmann from operating in the half spaces

I think the idea is to flood midfield with bank of 4, with Mueller ahead of them

So Kimmich is playing right midfield, - not RWB

In theory, it will be harder to expose Kroos in this setup, as he is never by himself - either Hummels is with him. or he is protected by the wide midfielders

The big difference to '18 is germany have sharp countering players themselves in Havertz, Kimmich, Gnabry, Werner, Sane

So I presume the idea will be to sit deeper and play vertically

This is what you are saying I think - hahahaha

WHERE Hummels Pushes up to cover Kroos - Most attack will go over the left wing with Gosens, and Kimmich tracking back and centrally to help cover Griezmann and Mbappe.

This could work if they fully concentrate for the 90 minutes - basically as you say flooding midfield with up to 6-7 players at a time Or basically with a 4 backline and Hummels as a very deep DM behind Kroos

Yep, I stated that in one of my previous posts, with this line up the tactical battle will have to be absolutely Spot on

I still remember us going into the first game against Holland as huge underdogs with everyone expecting they would shoot us out of the stadium. I was yelling my head off after the Frings goal which at that point was fully deserved btw. This is like 30 minutes into the tournament and Kerner as announcer also yells goal like it's the winning goal of a final

Kimmich at right-back... that shows Low is giving up the midfield against Portugal and France, meaning Germany will be sitting deep for good spells. Germany can't afford Cristiano and Mbappe to get in behind them. Kimmich is an all rounder and Germany need a dynamo like him in the middle. Muller, Gundogan and Kroos are creative players lacking steel. TBH, those three are not going to better France's midfield and I think Germany should get rid of at least one of them for a more rounded midfielder. Rudiger can't afford to step out of the defense for Germany whenever he wants, so when he does he will need to be an assassin and be ready to put a good hit on Griezmann. Hummels will have to step up because France will be very dominant in the middle of the pitch in terms of quality and numbers. He is too slow to be exposed and needs Rudiger for cover, he has some leeway getting forward.

I'm clinging on to the hope that apart from 2018 we normally start tournaments with a real performance, hopefully that trend continues.

A margin of one would be sufficient - actually Goldmann Sachs have predicted we would beat France - but hey we can’t trust a bank can we hahahah

Yes Germany will sit deep according to what we can see is going to happen....

YOu are quie right by your summary _ I think Hummels will play a kind of DM with the faster Rudiger /Gintner covering him. Hummels as a deep lying DM will hopefully disrupt Griezmann enough and Kimmich helping to cover Mbappe.

Anyway I think thats the idea more or less.- Although if we now sit so deep , we would need fast players up front to act on the counters = not sure how fast Havertz is? So I would also consider Werner with Gnabry - Werner is brutally fast and he can run behind the French lines with his speed... yes his finishing is not he best .

Jogi can substitute 5 times - so He could even start Werner for the first 30 minutes if he wants to : coaches with this 5 players substitution policy must not always wait until the 60th minute. Well Werner could come in later as well , but would give him a try - because of his speed.

If we have more sex than France the night before, then we will win the game. Afternoon sex does not count.

I guess there is no point in discussing any tactical options for any other possible games until we have played France. I guess nothing matters until then. Portugal and Hungary at this point don't matter..... but just one small comment though .

IF we do okay against France and Portugal (e.g 4 points ) I would like Jogi to try a few other things, at least part of the game as subs.
Goretska, Volland, Sule come to mind here and Kimmich back in DM.

Remember that this is not club football, so we are unlikely to see complex pressing systems etc - there is no time to develop them.

If France follow their '18 approach, they won't be pressing the German team high, but rather sitting back and playing on the counter.

Germany are also unlikely to be so possession oriented as '18

Anyone deairing enough to do any predictions on this game?

So as its the first game of the tourney for both and they will both play very safe , until some one scores- then they have to open the game to at lest get a draw.

Germany always concedes a goal... mhhhhhhhh So I think I will go with a
    1-1 draw.

2-1 for France (but I always prefer to predict the negative ending so then I can be pleasantly dissapointed).

Yeah in this system hummels and Kroos are the pivots in possession

Out of possession it'll be interesting to see how the midfield plays - i wonder how much germany will press if at all

3:1 France, although I also like predicting negative endings to be pleasantly disappointed!
