Borjan makes one bad mistake every time he plays for us, yet he keeps starting every game. I don't care where he plays his club soccer, it's ridiculous that he keeps doing it. I would take either of the other two keepers in net. At least they aren't prone to mental mistakes. Kamal Miller at CB is good for us, I like his athleticism.
Jonathan Tannenwald @thegoalkeeper 14m A source with knowledge of the situation tells The Inquirer that Cayman Islands vs. Canada - being played at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. - is tentatively rescheduled for tomorrow (Monday) at 6 p.m. ET.
You led 6-0 at halftime and won 11-0. According to Wikipedia, it was your most goals in a game. Your old record and USA's current record are 8. Lucas Cavallini scored 3 to tie your record for goals by a Canadian in a game. Your +15 goal differential is 6 better than Suriname's. If you beat Aruba on June 5, a draw against Suriname on June 8 will almost certainly be enough to advance. Cayman Islands is eliminated. 181 of 211 countries including 31 of 35 in Concacaf are alive.
Tonight was a total waste of time. I get that Canada aren't a powerhouse but that was painful to sit through.
At halftime, Canada's six goals were by different players, including the first career goal for four players. Canada's roster had 17 career goals before today. The record-breaking ninth goal happened when Kaye had a penalty kick saved, he shot and was saved again, and Davies scored on the third shot in the 73rd minute. Cavallini scored in the 74th and 76th to make it three goals in four minutes, and Canada didn't score after that. Cavallini was subbed on in the 60th minute. Canada hit the woodwork at least three times. All of that information comes from the highlights from OneSoccer. I wish FIFA had statistics for WCQs, but they don't. https://www.espn.com/soccer/matchstats?gameId=578821 says shots were 44 to 0, and shots on goal were 16 to 0. Canada had 76 percent of the possession. To compare, here are statistics from when England won 5-0 hosting San Marino last week. Shots were 32 to 2 (that's from ESPN so I'm using the same source for each game, but Flash Score says San Marino had 1 shot), shots on goal were 15 to 0, and England had 85 percent of the possession.
Peacock's not available here. As far as I know, Paramount Plus Canada doesn't carry any of the soccer - that's only in some foreign countries.
I was looking at our all time player records. With Larin scoring in these games he became only the 12th player ever to go into double digit goals. Think about that for a moment for how bad we had to be and how few games we had to play to have that few goal scorers over 145 years! That's less than one double digit scorer per decade! Right now we are in an odd window. Our team is actually pretty good for CONCACAF but our ranking hasn't caught up yet so we're still getting pitted against minnows. Pretty soon that window will close as our ranking improves and get slotted into games against teams that are more at our level. That will be the end of these painful games. But for the next year or two we're still going to see our goal scorers racking up huge tallies.
If Canada and Mexico don't have to qualify for 2026 because they're tri-hosting, your FIFA Ranking won't matter for WCQ seeding until 2030. Concacaf will have more spots then. I know each team isn't equally likely to advance, but each Round 1 group of five has half a spot in the Octagonal, so that's 1/10th of a spot multiplied by 3.5 of 8 teams qualifying is 3.5 in 80, which is 7 in 160 to use whole numbers. The original format (pre-pandemic) would have given you 1 spot in 96 or 128 depending on if you got drawn into a group of three or a group of four. You would have had to win a group and win five two leg series. Assuming you win your group, in June you will have four WCQs in one month for the first time since April 4, 11, 18, and 25, 1993. All 16 of your goals:

Here's the schedule for Group B in Eastern Time: Wednesday June 2 at 6:00 P.M. Cayman Islands vs. Aruba at IMG Academy at Brandeton, Florida, USA Friday June 4 at 6:00 P.M. Suriname vs. Bermuda (the only home game of the five) Saturday June 5 at 8:00 P.M. Aruba vs. Canada at IMG Academy at Brandeton, Florida, USA Tuesday June 8 at 8:00 P.M. Bermuda vs. Cayman Islands at IMG Academy at Brandeton, Florida, USA Tuesday June 8 at 9:05 P.M. Canada vs. Suriname at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois, USA Aruba and Cayman Islands have 0 points and are eliminated, so their game determines who finishes last and if fourth and last are decided by goal differential. Bermuda must win at Suriname to stay alive. The two games on the last matchday are not at the same time, but the 1 seed hosts the 2 seed on the last matchday in every group, so many of the other games on June 8 won't matter. Canada's goal differential of +15 is 6 better than Suriname's, and Canada's next game is against a worst opponent, so it would be shocking if Canada doesn't beat Aruba, or if Canada beats Aruba and Suriname gets up to Canada's goal differential. Canada will probably just need a draw on June 8, and performance in this round doesn't affect how the group winners are treated later.
Thanks for the interest you take in our team with your posts on the topic. Knowing we can progress with a draw is something good to realize in the backs of our minds, I guess. At this point, however, we aren't looking to squeak in. Anything less than two solid wins to start off the month of June would be a huge disappointment. (And I'm expecting two more later in the month.)
You're much better than Suriname in FIFA and ELO, and in ELO you have a chance to pass Costa Rica to make the top three in Concacaf be North American.
The way the matchups for games have gone (what covid has permitted, anyway) means that we have frustratingly not been playing against any second tier CONCACAF teams. We've played the US a couple of times and then a bunch of minnows but we haven't been able to measure ourselves against the teams with which we are battling for the third qualifying spot. My gut says we are in a dogfight with Costa Rica and Jamaica for third place. I believe we can beat them but we haven't yet and it is close enough that the vagaries of any given game day can still easily tip the balance. We also have a dragon to slay in Honduras as soon as the scheduling puts us back on the field together. That one will feel good. Frankly, given the weapons our team has now and the history every Canadian player and fan wants to see addressed, it would be wise for Honduras to be very afraid when that game comes. We will be bringing the blizzard to that one and Honduras will need their A game if they want to keep the score line from getting ugly.
Perhaps a literal blizzard as well, as in a March FIFA window match in Edmonton or Winnipeg? I know it hasn't happened in recent memory, but has Canada ever scheduled competitive matches in those locations in March or November?
Canada should play more friendlies vs top countries. Watching the US struggle vs a mediocre Swiss team makes me think how much better Canada would've done. David and Larin are better than any American forward I've seen.
We should play more friendlies, period. There should never be a FIFA window in which we don't have a game of some kind.
