Does MLS still have plans to become a top league? I think we've now settled for the goal of becoming the premiere selling league in CONCACAF. I could see them trying to become a better selling league than any in CONMEBOL eventually, though that will be hard. After those goals are achieved, I have no idea if they will ever actually transition to being a buying league... After all, why? Being a selling league is profitable. Being a buying league leads to billion dollar debts like Tottenham.
Depends what you mean by "top league". If you're wondering if they want to be on par with La Liga, EPL, Bundesliga, etc? I don't think that was ever the goal. But getting into the top 10 or 20 leagues? Just getting on par with Liga MX would get them there and, tbh, that's probably MLS's goal. Getting to the point where they are on par, or better than Liga MX would make a lot of MLS owners happy.
I would like MLS HQ to reach the revenue earnings of Power 5 college gridiron. Where a Texas A&M or a Ohio State pull in $100+ year after year. Then Don and the owners can look to spending on the level of Europe. Have MLS be the biggest spending in North America first, then outspend all the Americas and then spend on the par with Europe. There is this: Forbes' top 10 highest-paid footballers: 1. Lionel Messi - $126m 2. Cristiano Ronaldo - $117m 3. Neymar - $96m 4. Kylian Mbappe - $42m 5. Mohamed Salah - $37m 6. Paul Pogba - $34m 7. Antoine Griezmann - $33m 8. Gareth Bale - $29m 9. Robert Lewandowski - $28m 10. David De Gea - $27m And then there is where MLS is at for team spending: MLS Salaries per Club – 2020 SALARIES TOR $24.5 million LAG $20.5 million CHI $19 million LAFC $14.37 million SEA $14 million MTL $13.1 million ATL $13 million SKC $12.21 million POR $12 million NER $11.27 million COL $11.25 million NYC $10.95 million DCU $10.91 million ORL $10.6 million NASH $10.6 million RSL $10.1 million MIA $10 million NYRB $10 million CIN $9.44 million SJE $9.25 million FCD $9.15 million MINN $9.12 million COL $9 million PHL $8.88 million HOU $8.8 million VAN $8.5 million I had the graph that showed MLS along with Liga MX but I cannot dig that one right now.
This is exactly what struck me about the proposal. Trends in world soccer are moving in the direction they want, all they needed to do was keep circulating the idea and maybe give it a little push now and then. By going for it all at once, in the way that they did, they were certain to alienate people. And their being forced into an immediate reversal was a public embarrassment. I guess I can see how egos lead you astray, but the American owners at least seem more like long-term planning and run-the-numbers kind of people.
Real Madrid president Perez: "It's impossible to make signings like Mbappé and Haaland, in general, not just for Real Madrid, without the Super League." Ok... how about don't buy them then? Let a new team get good. So entitled!
It seems like the spanish teams and juve needed the money now. I think we will find out that it was them that pushed so hard to move this along now. Premature performance is a problem among many middle aged men. If they could have held on for a while longer it might have worked.
That’s the best part. Real Madrid can’t afford the transfer fees because Real Madrid over paid for everyone for the last decade. You played yourself.
The superstars were developed by some teams, and now it will be more profitable to keep them sometimes. As it should be.
Yes, developed by Monaco and Bryne respectively, but they didn't stick around with them for much longer.
You know... like the rest of the teams do... They'll still have a massive advantage due to name recognition alone, but that isn't enough apparently.
Yes they were sold while they were affordable. Now, Perez claims that they are no longer affordable. Ok, that's good, so they can stay where they are then. He just wants to be able to buy every shiny toy he wants. Sorry buddy, not happening.
Why would they do that? Are they that unhappy where they are? If so they will find a way out, just like American athletes do. For example free agency (aka free transfer when contract runs out)
I know Cosmos supporters have a tendency to be delusional, but I heard zero rumors of the Cosmos joining the Super League. 5 Points Statement | #NYCosmos pic.twitter.com/8ajhnVV2rA— 5 Points (@5_Points_NYC) April 23, 2021
