Yeah, I mean at the end of the day the "proper" channels is just another set of billionaires. (or at least corrupt multi-millionaires) Still, without the battle for 4th, a lot of these top leagues become really boring. MLS solved that issue by having playoffs.

I would think the number of levels in England would make it much harder than most other countries tho. And speaking of which:

Yes? SV Austria Salzburg was founded by fans of the team Red Bull bought and flushed the history of. The highest they got was to the second division and then they got absolutely destroyed by teams owned by people with actual money and they dropped 2 levels in 2 seasons.

Well, if anyone wasn't sure that Europeans were actually blaming Americans for the Super League, someone's shown up and removed all doubt.

Again, the main impetus behind this has not been the American EPL owners, but the two Spanish giants and Juventus.

Also, didn't MLS fans literally JUST stop a team from being moved? So when you say "Americans" please specify that you mean "the NFL"...

EDIT: To be specific, fans brought attention to the problem and the team was rescued by a billionaire.

But that's largely because MLS had a spot open for expansion. If MLS were like the NFL where there aren't any spots open, Columbus wouldn't have a team right now.

I think what they learned is that next time they need to be willing to break fully with the FIFA/UEFA orbit. Not this half-in/half-out proposal. They will have to completely leave their domestic leagues. And that will be a hard sell.

I don't care who's behind it. Americans, Europeans or Martians. I just don't want to see such "closed league" in the European sporting landscape.

I am realistic enough to know that the ESL threat hasn't dispersed completely. But today I will celebrate, raise a glass, and tell these 12 clubs to "foxtrot oscar".

Honestly, if it's all about the money these people can try to start a new league outside of FIFA and use their billions to try to get the best players. I don't think they will succeed though. And there are probably anti-compete clauses preventing that?

Or they learned they need to grease more wheels next time by passing out bribes to politicians and UEFA/Fifa execs to leave them alone, and also to jurnos so they write nice things about them to control the narrative.

Were those US streaming companies, Facebook and JP Morgan ever involved in football on that scale before this failed league though?

The execution does point out to a massive misunderstanding of Euro football culture and I think greedy, arrogant Euro owners and especially indebted clubs jumped at the opportunity to get that much cash upfront. Barca are over a billion in the red so they needed the money. Let's be honest here... in the past they never went further than making threats because all they wanted were concessions from UEFA and enough awareness that this wouldn't work.

I don't think there's anything wrong from those American companies/owners to have played a role on getting this league started. They provided a different perspective/way to do business in football while bringing actual cash commitment and media rights buyers to the table. There was enough there to pull the trigger - they did it wrong - It didn't work out - lesson learned.

Like @Nico Limmat said, their biggest mistake was wanting to have it all. Next time, they will have to leave all national/European competitions & bodies altogether and lived with the consequences instead of the parasitic approach

Like a famous master once said

Agreed, it worked out for Columbus because MLS was willing to grow which accommodated Precourt and the league found another really rich person to buy the team in Ohio. As a Quakes fan who tried to stand up to the moving of my team and was not successful, we need to remember MLS is a business at heart. I am glad for Columbus but MLS is owned by billionaires who can decide to do what they want.

Still think the ESL was a bad idea though. :)

I will gladly make fun of Schalke "fans" who decide the best response to their team having another bad year is to attack the players. Dumbasses.

And if MLS and Liga MX ever try to set up their own league outside of CONCACAF to compete with the CCL and place LAG, Seattle, NYRB, Atlanta, Chivas, America, Leon, and Pumas in as permanent members, I promise that I am turning in my tickets to the Quakes and walking away, just like the fans in Europe threatened to do.

This thread is about to be less noisy, as someone won’t be joining us again.

Word to the wise: This is an MLS forum for MLS fans. If outsiders want to offer opinions, that’s fine. But if you’re not a regular here, coming in with “DuMb MeRICans, LOL” isn’t going to work out well for you.
