If true....this is a shame....they should just choose the last teams that lost to these teams and move forward. Flip a coin if no obvious choice.

Entrepreneurs is a funny word here. Yes, many of the owners are self made, but none of them have any connection to the foundation of the clubs they now own. They've taken over clubs that have a solid foundation and are ripping them apart at their core.

I'm not sure how you can call FIFA/UEFA greedy here. They may have been corrupt in the past, but recently they haven't been awful since the investigations, and they uphold what the fans want.

The "entrepreneurs", as you call them, which really are more like parasites, are bleeding the sport of football for personal business gains and removing merit from the equation.

So still room to backtrack I guess?? My uneducated gut reaction was that this would end in some type of negotiation that would keep roughly the status quo but benefit the super clubs in some capacity, like a guaranteed champions league birth every year. They might just come out of this worse off though. Cant say I’d feel bad for them.

    1. what is to say that the Champions League match against Real could be cancelled by the CL (UEFA)?

    2. or that the rest of this Premier League season is simply rejiggered with those 6 teams immediately removed from the table and all of their remaining games cancelled?

I realize this is the nuclear option but either these 12 clubs think they are in the charge or the rest of the football world.

well now that I just read some of the more recent posts this could already be happening.

football worldwide is a balance of capitalism and collectivism ..... the global game has benefitted from the growth while BALANCING the needs of smaller clubs and player development.

These 12 - driven no doubt by a few owners and by a few clubs (Juventus and Real Madrid ...) in a bad financial situation ... deciding to blow up the long term situation in favor of their own short term goals.

And JP Morgan, ESPN, Kroenke, Fenway Sports, and the Glazer family have been at the center of it. Yes I love capitalism ... but don't kid yourself ... in the US all these sports are monopolies and these 12 are trying to take that tradition and crush the rest of the world with it. If I did not care about the global game and development then I would agree with it. But this is greed WITHOUT balance.

There always has to be a set of compromises and these 12 just decided to flip everyone the bird. I think they will regret it.

A group of people more greedy than FIFA, somehow making FIFA look good.

But - at least these clubs are businesses, they are supposed to be greedy. FIFA is non-profit. Surely they have come to their senses and are doing this for the good of the game, and for COMPETITION, not to maintain their grip on Champions League revenues.

Let's also not forget when praising the "entrepreneurs," which I agree is a strange word to use for this collection of billionaire sports team owners, that these owners have benefited greatly from the efforts of their national associations and FIFA for in some cases over a century to get to the position they are now as they seek to kick the ladder out from behind themselves. These teams were grown through the leagues and fans that have supported them for all this time, not to even speak of the countries who make special arrangements to allow football to play by different rules than other businesses. Saying now I want to take my ball and leave is petty and completely ignores all the efforts of so many that collectively raised these clubs to where they are now. And they should certainly have no expectation that FIFA or UEAFA would want to do them any favors like letting them remain in leagues or play in other competitions after this. If the leagues don't kick them out for this, they would be showing themselves to be extraordinarily weak. I hope they throw them all out and I'm fine with them doing so immediately. If the teams drop it, they can play next year. If they don't, good riddance.

Confirmation that there's still an open offer for Bayern, Dortmund, and PSG to join and complete the list of 15 permanent members.

UK government (sports minister) has said that if football doesn't sort this out they will do everything they can to stop this from happening. I think these clubs are in big trouble. Clubs will be thrown out their domestic leagues, players will rebel, stadiums will be empty, fans will boycott, demonstrate & possibly riot, the government will make things somewhat awkward. I feel clubs might just be backtracking soon!

This ain’t about entrepreneurs. This is late stage capitilism.

this all started when Madrid bought Figo and OG Ronaldo for insane money and wages. Then Roman comes along and splashes his mobster millions, the glazers bought Utd and did the same, except with debt, and the football cold wars began. Clubs were forced to choose between Debt and irrelevance.

today, it costs $100M to buy a good, but not great central defender. Barcelona, a decade ago, had possibly the best team in history, and now have 1B in debt. A bunch of these super clubs are are close to literal insolvency.

So what’s the response? To double down. Ante up. Form a super league that will get you TV money the likes the world has ever seen, shared between 15 clubs, while ********ing over the rest of European soccer. Not to say that UEFA/FIFA are good actors in this, but what the ESL Owners are doing is even more greedy.

What’s more interesting, is that it’ll likely work. UEFA/FIFA need these clubs more than the clubs need UEFA/FIFA.

UEFA and fifa will blink, and form an agreement

If Madrid comes rolling into Old Traffod with their star studded lineups, you can be sure those stands will be full.

If the English FA throws out the big 6, you think NBC/Sky are paying whatever millions to air Everton vs West Ham?

they don’t have much leverage right now

I only called them entrepreneurs because they are starting a new venture. I didn't mean to "trigger" anyone. Call them Clubs.

The Clubs goal is to make more money to provide a better team and better games for their fans.

What are FIFA and UEFA"s goals?

What happens when the allure is gone and it's just another boring midseason matchup between 5th place Real Madrid and 11th place Manchester United, instead of an intriguing and somewhat less common clash in the late stages of Champions League?

Really!!? You think so!? Really!? You obviously have NO IDEA about Man Utd fans - I mean REAL ones not ones in Jakarta! Believe me the best they can hope for is empty stands, they'll be lucky if there is no rioting! Tomorrow I expect the Premier League to expel the six English clubs from the league if they try to go ahead with this.

Chelsea fans being opposed to this is hilarious. This was set in motion when Roman bought them over 15 years ago. Very few can or want to compete with the unlimited spending power of City, PSG, Chelsea, etc. This includes clubs like Liverpool and Arsenal which are owned by Americans and know how lucrative the franchise model is. Middling clubs like Arsenal and Spurs maintain their relevancy as the champions league becomes harder for them to secure. The chosen Italian clubs can compete with the money that has flooded into the Premier League. I'm sure Bayern and PSG will eventually join as well because they will make much more money being a part of this than just staying in their domestic leagues and playing in the husk of the champions league.

The globalization of the game and UEFA siphoning off money means these clubs aren't maximizing their revenue potential. This was always going to happen and COVID just accelerated the timeline because clubs need the money now.

And no matter what the players say, this is a better deal for them too. More money to play fewer games than they would if they were still participating in all of the domestic cups and the revamped, expanded champions league. The only thing that might cause them to make a fuss is being banned from playing for their national teams, but I doubt that will happen once the right people are paid.

This is the weirdest part of all this for me, the actual capitalist side of this is the one with open competition, without salary caps and revenue sharing, etc. The American sporting landscape is the one with totalitarian socialism safety nets, lack of competition etc.

I like soccer because it very different from the NBA, NFL and MLB all of which are sports I used to care passionately about, I haven't given a crap in decades because they are boring McDonald's franchises.

It doesn't matter that Ajax hasn't won since 94, they are allowed to compete, that isn't some insignificant difference, it's everything.

IF they adopt the NFL model (which is basically what this is), they'll likely implement a playoff of some kind
