Seems like the main critique is the 15 guaranteed permanent spots. Including for clubs like Arsenal and AC Milan, who haven't qualified for the Champions League in 4 or 5 seasons now, or clubs like Inter Milan and Liverpool who were in this year's edition of the tournament but spent years on the outside looking in not too long ago. Obviously not as much of an issue for fans of American sports who don't have anything like the pyramid system of European football, but it seems to be a pretty jarring change for fans of that system.
another angle worth mentioning is how the uefa plans for ucl reform try and compromise with the mega clubs who arent mkaing champions league by providing a number of them with spots even if they dont qualify. you cant open the barn door with the paul singers of the world.
Grimly funny that this could happen at the only moment in history that it would hurt the USMNT at a major tournament instead of helping us.
What is the point of domestic competitions now? Bayern wins BL, PSG in Ligue Un, top 3 in Spain remain the same, top 3/4 in Italy the same. England is the only one that has a bit of change, and even that is marginal. As I said before, these leagues screwed themselves earlier allowing the big money in. Now it's in, you can't just go back.
Yeah I get that point...but sports is about money now. Those teams have the best combo of money and talent/performance. If you don't like the way money has come to dominate the sport, you shoulda kept the American owners out, and the Saudis, and the Russian oligarchs. Assuming Porto and Bayern join these 12, you'd have to go back to 1994 to see a different team win the UCL (Ajax). Maybe it is the American/capitalist in me, but I don't see how there can be much angst about the "competitive" aspect of this.
As a fan wouldn't you rather see Chelsea play Real Madrid than Anderlecht? Wouldn't you rather see Arsenal play Juventus than Dinamo Kiev? Why the anger at the clubs from their fans. Now I understand a fan of a club not in the Super League being upset because they are basically playing in the Europa Cup rather than the Champion's League as their reward for an outstanding season. In regard to FIFA they would just be cutting off their nose to spite their face if they were to ban these players from playing for their national teams. It would lead to a new type of World Cup not run by the corrupt FIFA group.
I argue it will be the other way around! This European bollox will become the second rate competition, I'm telling you no **** will be attending, how appealing will games be with no crowd!? Along with EVERY other match day supporter of these clubs my allegiance will go elsewhere, how will the 'super' league be when an empty stadium is beamed to China with nobody in the country in which the stadium sits having any interest whatsoever!? How long will the papers cover Liverpool when nobody in the UK gives a sh*t? Goodison Park will suddenly have twice the usual demand for tickets while Anfield will still look like it's on lockdown! Trust me unless these clubs fans (the ones that REALLY matter) Want this it ain't happening, and if it does it's soon becoming irrelevant.
I feel like a handful of greedy American owners are forcing our closed system on Europe, in the name of profit for a few. While pissing all over the history and tradition of the game. Although the La Liga giants seem fine with it. Props to Bayern and BVB for telling the super league to F off. Saw Chelsea felt they were backed into a corner by the American Prem club owners. Good on you Klopp. Rumours tonight that Jurgen klopp has told the owners of Liverpool FC that if Liverpool join the #EuropeanSuperLeague he will resign as manager #LFC ⚽️🔴 pic.twitter.com/zVl1nWR3AB— Ian (@Mancman10) April 18, 2021
Do you think the EPL or any major Euro team makes its money from the local fans spending 50 pounds to go to a game? That hasn't been the case in years. The owners don't care about the local fans, they care about global appeal and television rights, which go hand in hand. That's where the money is at now.
Isn't the closed American system much better for competition? I would never want them to do away with relegation/promotion (which I realize is what this new SL is), but it's not like these Euro leagues have perfected it. They have a couple teams that win the leagues every year. The history and tradition of the game got pissed on when the US/Russia/Emirati money came in and invented the super clubs.
You think the 75,000 match day attending Utd fans will just shrug their shoulders and let this go!!? At BEST they won't attend at worst they'll riot!! How 'Super' will that make this new league?
I ask this sincerely. Why would they not go to watch Man U play WBA at Old Trafford? It is not like the EPL is being changed? Why would they not go watch the Reds play Barcelona in the Super League?
Good man Jurgen 'the top of a VERY big iceberg' if the idiots think that people in England are going to let this ride then they REALLY don't know their fans!! (which is blindly obvious).
Yes it is. The super league will cause these teams to pull out of their domestic leagues since they won't be sanctioned by UEFA, and therefore there won't be Man U vs West Brom.
SERIOUSLY! No disrespect but you obviously have NO IDEA when it comes to football supporters! (European ones).
Fans aren't the main part of it. It's the players. Like it or not, if the best players in the world play for these clubs, then people will watch. But if the players take a stand and the product takes a hit, then people will watch the domestic leagues and these teams will be made an example out of.
That is on UEFA. They just want their money from the Champion's League. The teams are not saying they want to pull out of their domestic leagues. Are they?
Poor Chelsea. Obviously their billionaire foreign owner is a good guy being peer pressured by the bad Americans.
Try Go*"ing something like 'Liverpool supporters club' to try and garner what Liverpool fans (as one example) think, this might help put across the potential ramifications to this proposal. I believe the sh*t us just starting to hit the fan now. Back in the eighties (you might remember) English football had big issues with hooligans, I mean BIG issues, something like this could easy result in serious riots.
More likely....the super league will cause the rest of the football teams in the pyramid to evict the participants, meaning there won’t be Man U v West Brom
When in doubt....blame the Americans. Rather than the giant European clubs that have been living way beyond their means, rigging the competition rules to ensure they can continue to do so, and are now in pretty terrible financial shape and are desperate to avoid paying the piper.
