The GOP thinking in CO is likely down to the party trying to claw back their loss of the state over the past decade. If they don’t dump resources into the state in 2022, it will only get progressively more difficult to compete. IL seems to be a head scratcher. I think they’re hoping that politics/budget/tax frustration with the Dems at the state level translates to a national seat. In normal times (where Romney types control the GOP nationally) it might. This is not one of those times.

Iowa is to Dems what CO is to the GOP. I don’t think it’s winnable, but it’s moderate enough that you’ve gotta try before it spins away for good.

Boebert has a whole gang of competitors throwing their hats in the ring.

Which concerns me…as long as her opposition remains united as the candidates get whittled down…it should work….

One more retirement in the GOP ranks, Roy Blunt from Missouri. Honestly, I will not be surprised if Mitch jumps ship as well. Missouri is a long shot for the Dems but it is doable. More seats to defeat for the Rs as well.

I wonder what is behind all the Republicans retiring this cycle.. Given the pattern of the President's party taking a beating in the midterm elections, things should go well for Republicans in this election.

McConnell is reportedly laying the groundwork for his departure from the Senate prior to the end of his term. He's already created a potential list of successors and he is pushing for the Kentucky legislature to remove the ability of the Governor to replace him and to allow the party of the departing Senator to announce his replacement.

I’d like to see Kander take another crack at this one. The only two I can see with a real shot are him and Claire, but I don’t think McCaskill can pull it off. Kander is more broadly appealing (assuming the PTSD drop out of the KC mayor race doesn’t pull him down). His wife is awesome too.

Kander already declared he will not run for the Senate seat. For that matter, Claire as well.

Thanks. Didn’t expect responses from them so soon. In that case, it will take a Roy Jones level GOP candidate for this to be winnable. Unless Ozzie Smith decides to run for office, Galloway is the only other Dem with any statewide recognition. Nixon would never work.

Actually, the former Republican governor Eric Greitens is the favorite on the GOP side. Since he is involved in a number of scandals, including blackmail, sexual abuse etc, that could be an opening for a Democrat in the state.

A theory is Republicans are retiring because they don't like politics being Democrats vs. what Trump wants.

If Kentucky changes the law to require the replacement to be of the same party as the senator who left, it will be fair even if it was done for a partisan reason. Kentucky elects governors in odd years before presidential years, so halfway through McConnell's term Andy Beshear will have to run. If Republicans gain the Senate in 2022 and McConnell goes back to majority leader, I'd be shocked if he retired as majority leader even if he knew he would be replaced by a Republican. Of the 37 states that let appointed senators serve until a Congress starts, only 6 require the appointee to be of the same party as the senator who left. This includes three states where both senators are of a different party than the governor, which are Arizona, Maryland, and North Carolina. Of the other 13 states, 8 make an appointed senator run (or retire) in a special election during a Congress if it is sufficiently before Election Day in an even year, and 5 states do not let the governor appoint a senator and leave seats vacant until a special election. Those states are North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin.

It is not "fair" if you only do it to immediately benefit yourself. It is like expanding voting and then later restricting it ONLY when that expanded voting starts to disfavor your electoral chances (hello Georgia). If they thought this was "fair," they could have done this 3 years ago or 7 years ago, or ... you get the point.

You only have to ask yourself this -- if McConnell had lost in November, would the legislature of Kentucky be pushing this "fair" doctrine?

    But wait, there's more!
Trump Suggests He’d Endorse Herschel Walker In Georgia Senate Run (thefederalist.com)

    NOT from The Onion

Former President Donald Trump publicly urged his friend Herschel Walker, a Heisman Trophy winner and former professional football player, to run for U.S. Senate in Georgia on Wednesday, hinting that he would endorse him.

“Wouldn’t it be fantastic if the legendary Herschel Walker ran for the United States Senate in Georgia?” Trump said in a statement. “He would be unstoppable, just like he was when he played for the Georgia Bulldogs, and in the NFL. He is also a GREAT person. Run Herschel, run!”
    . . . .
Walker previously spoke on the first night of the Republican National Convention in 2020, where he defended Trump’s character and disputed allegations of racism against the then-president, saying, “I’ve seen racism up close. I know what it is and it isn’t Donald Trump.”

“It hurt my soul to hear the terrible names that people call Donald. The worst one is racist,” Walker said. “I take it as a personal insult that people would think I’ve had a 37-year friendship with a racist. People who think that don’t know what they are talking about.”

He also signaled Trump’s commitment to racial reform through his actions in office.

    Good bye dude...Hardly knew ya....

Rep. Tom Reed (R-NY) said in a statement Sunday night he would not run for re-election or for governor in 2022, following allegations last week of inappropriate sexual conduct,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

It's not a house nor Senate but a governor election. John James, who is confused, is planning on running for governor of Michigan. This is already after losing two elections to Senators.

Oh, and the GOP had to put Republican on his billboards outside of Detroit. As if that's not telling enough as it is.

This . Actually, the state legislature shenanigans may speed up that process.

“Georgia is roughly where Virginia was a decade ago: Republicans still control state government and may be able to redistrict the state to their liking one last time…but long-term/demographically, the writing is kinda on the wall.”

You say "hardly knew ya" like he's new, but 2020 was the fifth time he was elected. My aunt and uncle, who had their representative change after 2012 (redistricting), 2016 (retirement), 2018 (Anthony Brindisi defeated incumbent Claudia Tenney), and 2020 (Tenney defeated Brindisi) could get redistricted to Reed's district, but Reed won't be representing it then.

Pat McCrory, who was elected governor of North Carolina in 2012, is running for Senate to replace retiring Republican Richard Burr. McCrory was known for the anti-LGBTQ bathroom law, and he was unpopular enough to lose to Roy Cooper in 2016 while North Carolina voted for Trump and re-elected Burr. He's the second Republican to run for senator. The first was Mark Walker, who was one of two Republican House incumbents to not run last year because redistricting to undo gerrymandering made his district easily Democratic.

Chuck Grassley (R-IA), John Kennedy (R-LA), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), and Ron Johnson (R-WI) are the undecided incumbents. LA and VT are the only states that do not have any declared candidates yet. A poll showed Leahy losing to Republican Governor Phil Scott if Scott runs. Scott, term-limited Arizona Governor Doug Ducey, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, and term-limited Maryland Governor Larry Hogan are Republican governors who could try to gain Senate seats. The only 2020 general election loser running so far is QAnon supported Jo Rae Perkins in Oregon, who is challenging Ron Wyden. Perkins lost to Jeff Merkley by 17.6, but that was closer than the 18.8 that Monica Wehby lost to Merkley by in the great Republican year of 2014. Nobody other than Mark Kelly has announced he or she will run for senator from AZ yet. PA has twelve candidates already, which is double the next highest states. NC and OH have six, and AR and MO have five. That's according to Wikipedia.

New York 1 Representative Lee Zeldin is running for governor. Somebody said that a factor could be that he wants to be able to pardon Trump if Trump is charged with New York crimes.

On Saturday, Democrats Troy Carter and Karen Carter Peterson (who are not related) will have a runoff in Louisiana 2 to replace Democrat Cedric Richmond, who resigned to join the Biden administration. Including that district, there are five House vacancies, and four of them elected Democrats in 2020. A week later on May 1, Texas 6 will have a jungle primary of 25 candidates to replace Republican Ron Wright, who died of COVID. The runoff will be on May 24. New Mexico 1 let parties leaders vote for the nominees, which produced a surprise win for Democrat Melanie Stansbury, who is in the New Mexico House. That sped the process up because primaries weren't necessary, and the election will be on June 1. Democrat Deb Haaland won by 16.4 and resigned to be Secretary of the Interior, so Stansbury will probably win. Ohio 11 is having primaries, and their special general election won't be until election day on November 2. Democrat Marcia Fudge resigned to be Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Governor Ron DeSantis has to make dates for a special election to replace District 20's Alcee Hastings, who died on April 6.

I wouldn’t put a lot of stock into the Scott Leahy poll.
    1) it’s old (pre 2020 election)
    2) the sample was iffy. Much higher proportion of Trump voters than Clinton voters from 2016.
    3) the Capitol insurrection. In a liberal state, that’s going to turn people off to a GOP candidate even if we’re talking about someone like a Scott. Personal feelings on Scott aside, it’s a scary thought to give Senate control back to the party of the insurrection.

Not going to comment on all the potentials elections here but let me reassure you, Hogan can not win a election for Senate in Md, particularly against CVH. Not a chance. I know it, Hogan knows it and most Marylanders will agree as well.
