More on the racial/income disparities with these cameras. https://www.propublica.org/series/driven-into-debt https://projects.propublica.org/chicago-tickets/ Yes, the police patrol in many areas of downtown and Lincoln Park, but perhaps they should be "on patrol" in the less affluent neighborhoods, instead of "automating" the traffic enforcement to a private, for-profit company.
Yep, this is my biggest issue with these cameras. Some rich tool can blow through 30 red lights and barely notice the hit to his bank account, while people in vulnerable communities can end up in severe debt from just one. Fixing that would be my biggest priority, rather than just getting rid of the cameras altogether.
The rich tool blowing through 30 red lights would not even get a ticket as the cameras are not in the rich tool's neighborhood. Now, when the rich tool leaves United Center after sitting in the first tier at the Bulls game* and heads over to Madison and Cicero for some blow and to pick up a hooker, well, THEN they will get hit with the tickets. *in non-Pandemic times, of course
The best map I could find of the location of red light cameras in Chicago. I'm not sure this is a picture that shows red light cameras specifically targeting the poor.
US pedestrian deaths rose sharply in the first half of 2020 When you account for the drop in miles traveled, deaths rose by 20 percent. https://arstechnica.com/cars/2021/03/us-pedestrian-deaths-rose-sharply-in-the-first-half-of-2020/ I drive a car but I have no issue with slowing down traffic to make the streets safer. It’s gotten to a point that like with guns, society has become incapable of policing itself. Crosswalks should all be protected by speed bumps. Even ones on major thoroughfares.

LaSpata’s ordinance would remove reference to traffic “accidents” from Municipal Code https://chi.streetsblog.org/2021/04...nce-to-traffic-accidents-from-municipal-code/
Cause if PayPal and Robin hood want all they can get by ripping people off then I want it before they get it and it will go up
The fun thing about Bitcoin is if/when someone steals it all from you, you have zero recourse. And no currency based on banks ransoming off North Korean hackers would have that problem!
Hey let's ban a legal version of thc because it might cut into the profits of the millionaire cartel running the legal weed industry in Illinois. https://chicago.suntimes.com/platfo...-cannabis-botanic-alternatives-dispensary-cbd this shit is literally half the price and you don't need a special license to sell it.
Can’t really blame people for some concern: That stark warning was echoed by the owner of a cannabis testing lab who noticed multiple “red flags” when he tested Delta-8 products bought off store shelves in Chicago. The tester, who asked to remain anonymous, said he was most concerned that one brand of vaping cartridges had high levels of residual solvents and heavy metals, namely lead and chromium. “They’re not testing for that. … Heavy metals were directly attributed to the ‘Vapegate,’” said the tester, who shared the results with the Sun-Times. On top of that, he also found that some Delta-8 products have illegal levels of Delta-9 — meaning some stores are essentially selling weed.
Well ********. Yeah I don't blame people for being concerned. Doesnt mean it should be outright banned though. Maybe more rigorous standards etc. But still feels weird that it's a cheaper alternative and they are already trying to get rid of it. Think you saved me from going to pick one up tonight. Need to do more research and only buy from brands that have been tested not just the first shop I walk past
this is a big reason why you gotta legalize weed federally so you can have some oversight on some of this stuff
I agree. They're even adding it to hemp flowers now. Can't even trust the plant material anymore. It's like I got to grow my own just to know where it came from. Probably not a bad idea tbh
It's amazing to me how 2 people can watch that video and see completely different things. Senseless tragedy all around.
regardless of your take on the justifiability off the shooting, the intimacy of watching a 13 year old bleed to death is just awful to watch I couldn’t finish
What's the legality of shooting a cop if you feel your safety is threatened? ********ing double standard
After watching all the COPA videos, the only person I don't feel bad for and who deserves the most scorn is that f@cking 21 year old asshole who was gang banging with a child at 2:30 in the morning and supposedly gave the kid his gun to protect himself from a longer trip to jail. F@ck that guy.
I don't see how you could feel bad for the executioner but not this guy. I mean, I don't feel bad for either, personally, but I can't see how any justification for feeling bad for the actual murderer wouldn't apply to this dude, too. Like, do you feel bad for the killer because he was scared and felt he had no choice but to execute the child? Well, the 21 year old asshole felt he had no choice but to give the gun to the child. Do you feel bad for the killer because he'll have to live with the thought that his actions stole the life of a child? Well, the 21 year old asshole will likely live with that guilt, too. Far be it from me to tell you how to feel, obviously, just a little curious as to the logic behind it, I guess.
