So I'm certain that this will be proof that I am this new douchebag's chief patron, but I'm pretty sure there's a SHITLOAD of fertile ground between what he listed and being completely and utterly careless with respect to "protecting people around you", i.e. I'm pretty sure wearing a mask while driving alone is not really one of those things that affects the "goal" in...well, any way whatsoever. Lest you think that the example of the solo automobile driver wearing a mask is a strawman, I've personally seen it quite a bit around here, in lawless old Ohio. Now I'm pretty sure SOME of them have a decent reason for doing it, but I'm also sure that some of them are doing it because they think they have to and nothing else. Well, possibly some sort of fear. I'm not sure.
I'm also pretty sure that no one is saying that you should wear a mask while driving alone in your car.
I wouldn't be totally certain. It is happening, and something is causing it to happen, and it can't all be "ah, an Uber driver!"
Or, they are making multiple stops and it's just more convenient to leave it on, or, as Sam said, they forgot to take it off, etc, etc. Yet again. No one is advocating that people driving alone wear masks. If it is done, it's being done as an individual choice, not because it is being recommended by anyone.
Maybe. But I doubt it when I see people doing it in a residential neighborhood more than a 5 minute drive from the store.
I've done this myself in the 3rd wave e.g. there are places in Hamburg where you have to wear them outside, then i forget to take it off, and find myself inside my own apartment with it on.
All of these things are possible. I realize they are choices. I'm not arguing that they are not. I'm arguing that there are additional possibilities which are absurd (but still choices!) SamScouse seems to think that looking askance at that implies that the person so doing is not "keeping people safe". For some reason.
There is a legit reason behind the whole mask in the car solo thing - depending on the mask. The non medical, 3 layer, disposable masks are technically designed for 1 application, generally for a duration up to 4 hours. Once applied, you're not supposed to touch it again until removal, at which point you dispose. Those are the manufacturers own recommendations.
What was the point of the question in response to that comment if not to imply that his questioning of some people possibly being absurd means he himself was actively jeopardizing others?
No, he's not. He's responding to someone making an extreme comment with an equally extreme comment. I do, however, find it curious that you chose to question Sam's comment, while ignore the extreme comment in the other direction.
I have to keep asking why I need to bother repeating what up to 5 other people will jump on already. Is it because there's some sort of ritualistic utterances that make a comment valid? Is there some level of throat-clearing required before the group will accept something?
actually, reading someone mocking and scoffing at the precautions many people take against Covid, make me wonder what (if anything) a person with that attitude feels is his responsibility to protect other people. but it seems like 2+2=83 where you live.
Decent little read on the backcountry and the outdoors along with inexperienced outdoors people. Seriously though, I'm going to laugh at you if you're wearing Chucks or heels (WHich I've heard and seen) in the backcountry. Nature does not play around. I wrote about the COVID-era flood of amateur adventurers into the backcountry. It's great that folks are falling in love with the outdoors — but many aren't respecting the risk, and it's torching the country's neglected Search and Rescue infrastructure. https://t.co/zzGNRhUhWo— Ali Watkins (@AliWatkins) April 7, 2021
