Kind of meaningless game I guess, since most aint players who'll start at u23 tournament . Even when they won the first game, they were outplayed.

The only good thing was the crowd presence.

Awful nonetheless, 0-3 against Japan... imagine these guys against the big boys. Was there anyone at all that made a positive impression?

Not worried about the loss of the U23. There are few players on this list that we have hopes for, but some key guys were missing. Hoping that when we head to Tokyo this summer, players like Luka Romero, Julian Alvarez, Lisandro Martinez, Foyth, Medina etc (all eligible to play b/c its 23 and under) will join the team. Although, I imagine that guys like Lisandro and Foyth will play in the Copa American and not the Olympics.

U-23 tend to have the weirdest results since the guys that are really good don't get released for these things.

Luka will likely be with the next generation, considering he is still 16.

It does seem more and more of a problem with clubs not releasing players. I think if players want to play, they’ll force their hands. Messi did with Barcelona in 08. Now, not everybody is not Messi but what are the clubs going to do if a player gets on a plane and joins his mates? Sue him?

The reality is a lot of these players would rather be on the beach, drinking some drink with some umbrella in it and relaxing than playing and training for another month or so. The Olympics should be an honor for any player, you’re representing your country in the biggest sporting event in the world. The opening ceremony and stuff like that is something you’ll remember for the rest of your life. Hanging out at some resort can be anytime.

The players need to grow a pair and just go.

My god it’s already April copa is in 2 months. And I’m starting to get worried about the squad. Not sure when the deadline is to announce the calll ups. Man, Scaloni has to make the correct move and leave Otamendi in Portugal. Romero is a must as is Senesi/martinez.

Alaric with a clean finish. Palacios playing great imagine that. I don’t think this new coach will drop him any time soon. 3 subs made and he’s still playing.

what a ball from Palacios. Sadly a hair offside

Watched today’s game he was a beast. Named MOTM. I think he’ll be a starter in copa. If we only go by today’s game. We shouldn’t worry about his future anymore. He played the entire match. First higher up the pitch and then reverted into a DM when their captain was subbed off. So clearly he the coach is comfortable with him.

Nacho Fernandez got off to a fantastic start in Brazil, scoring 3 goals and 2 assists in his first 3 games with Atletico Mineiro

The guy has been one of the best, most consistent midfielders in the entire continent for the last 5 years now. How would you guys feel about taking him to Copa America?

Loco, let me ask you this. I know it’s the be all and end all of futbol but why hasn’t Nacho ever moved to Europe?

Because he was a late bloomer, with his career exploding when he was 25 or so when he was at Gimnasia... shortly after River bought him, and by the time he captivated more international attention he was already ~28ish -- a bit too old for European sides to make a heavy investment in him.

Celta Vigo made an attempt to sign him in 2018, but they simply couldn't match River's demands of $10-15M (similarly, they are trying to sign Borre now, but Chacho Coudet admitted the club is too broke)... There were a few other enquiries, but nothing formalized.

Anyway, I know we have Palacios, Lo Celso, Paredes, etc. in midfield, but Nacho is still an interesting option nonetheless.. We're not talking about a player who is coming off of a one-time, small streak of good form, but rather someone who has consistently been at the top of his game for years, gaining public admiration from teammates, coaches, spectators, and rivals alike.

I'm not saying he should definitely be present in our CA roster, but I think it's fair to have him in the discussion at the very least. I think he's veeeery superior to Guido Rodriguez, for instance, even though Guido plays in Europe and Fernandez doesn't.

And yes, I realize Guido is supposed to serve more of a defensive role, but having seen both play I don't think Rodriguez really has anything to offer that Nacho doesn't. If Guido was a Mascherano-type destroyer, I'd get it, but really he's just a 2021 version of Biglia. Nacho clearly possesses more technical abilities and a higher football IQ, and I think overall he'd bring much more to the team.

Understood. Yes, I just found it a bit perplexing why he never made the leap across the pond. I do vaguely remember the link to Celta. You would think though, a footballer would want some European football under his belt. Hell, Traca even got a season in England!

As for taking him to the Copa. I don’t know, should take and will take are two different things. As we know, managers have their ways and are at times stubborn as an old mule. Wasn’t Battaliga somebody Scaloni was keen on until he tore his ACL? And Guido is somebody he also likes. I don’t know, where Nacho falls in the order.

Scaloni has made some good choices but adding new blood. But he’s also stuck with certain players that really should not be in the starting 11 *cough* Armani *cough* Otamendi. We need some assurance in the midfield.
I don’t know how Lo Celso has done since he’s returned, and Palacios is perhaps finally getting some minutes. Paredes, who knows,‘I don’t really watch PSG too much.

It sucked we didn’t get any games during this break. We could’ve probably seen what the Copa side would’ve looked like. I guess we wait a little longer.

Yeah, I don't necessarily expect him to get called-up since Scaloni gets quite stuck to the players he caps, as you mentioned. Nacho made the 2019 CA preliminary squad, but was cut from the final 23. If he didn't get a chance in 2019, it's hard to imagine he will now that he's two years older...

However, six months after that CA, Scaloni admitted he was still keeping close track of Nacho for the NT:

So it's not thaaaat far-fetched to talk about a possible call-up. I wouldn't count on it, given Scaloni's loyalty to the group established over the past few years, but maybe if Nacho continues with this form for Mineiro in the next two months he can somehow sneak himself in.

Leonardo Balerdi scored for Marseille over the weekend. He is only 22 and he has started in all of the last 5 games playing 90 mins in each, now that Sampaoli is the manager. At 6'2, playing for one of the top sides in France and only 22 years old, I hope the NT doesn't give up on this kid. I don't know why he didn't breakthrough at Dortmund, but I think he could flourish in Marseille. Could become a solid option for CB

Buendia is killing it in the Championship and he’s been linked to Liverpool. Today, he’s scored one goal and provided with three assists.

Unfortunately, if he does leave he’ll probably end up at a place like PSG. A place where players go to kill off their careers. I’d take anyplace but PSG, that includes Atletico. But who knows, Cholo could probably leave if they manage to choke away La Liga, which appears it is going to happen.

If he doesn’t comeback with a bang, he will probably miss out on the CA.
