Hard foul by red. They both go down. White gets up first, grabs the fouler by the jersey as he is getting up and throws him back to the ground. Surprisingly no one else got involved.
After an absolute nightmare of a game last week in a men's college game (I need to put that one in the "first fight on the field"), I had a HSBV match in the center today. 3-0 home win. My positioning still isn't that great yet, as I often get too involved in play. But overall, had a solid match including a not-so-obvious penalty call when a player took a shot and was illegally knocked off balance. Also got a PI call right and was able to manage things when this same kid fouled again later in the match. The last thing I wanted was a 2CT sendoff in a 3-0 match when four red cards disqualifies a team from the state playoffs. I reminded the kid that he was already on a card, and he didn't do anything the rest of the match. Following the match, the visiting coach came up to me and said that was one of the most well-officiated matches he had seen. After last week, I needed that - particularly from the losing coach in a 3-0 match.
Good for you! I just looked up our state’s guidelines and it’s 3 reds. I remember two teams in pointy ball reaching the criteria in the first game of the season!
More power to her. I doubt we'll see each other unless both of us end up on the National list, but best of luck to her in her career.
Had the match been chippier, or had it been a more competitive match, I would have sent the kid off. It wasn't a particularly rough foul, but one of those clumsy "roll up" fouls. It was also deep in the home team's defensive end. One of those where no one would have really had a complaint if I had gone 2CT, but I had managed the game well and had some good relationships with the kids. It didn't hurt that home has a number of kids who are friends with my oldest son, and I do a lot of their club matches. They give me some grief during the games (they are high school boys after all), but overall I think they tend to not be as vocal since they know my son will give them a hard time at school the next day!
I think it's awesome to see a young referee like this at this stage in her career. regardless of gender. We need the next generation of young referees to step up. I see my 12-year-old son (who isn't certified yet, but will get certified in time to work matches in the fall) and one of my favorite partner's 13-year-old son who both have a serious interest in refereeing. The more we can do to get these young referees excited about officiating and working more matches, the better the game will be as these officials will gain confidence and want to keep climbing the ladder.
I talked three of my kids into refereeing. None of them lasted more than a couple of years. I probably spent too much time on my games, and not enough mentoring them. Lessons learned. Good luck to your son.
You read my mind. I already made the decision that I'm not going to work college next fall and just work at his events and a few sporadic events around the area. I'm enjoying college (except for the fight), but the primary focus this summer and fall is to get my family settled into the area. I'm definitely going to mentor him and work as much as I can with him to build his confidence. As I've told some of the higher-ups we both know, long-term he will serve the referee community a lot better and a lot more than I will.
You have to have your son work with other refs too. He needs to learn different styles and techniques, and see what he can use for himself. If you watch some of his games you can point out that Ref X really didn't know what he was doing in that situation, and your son should learn some other method to deal with it. Or you can point out that Ref Y did something unique that worked for him, maybe wouldn't work for everyone, but both you and he can take it under advisement to see if it would work for you. Edit: This assumes your son is willing to learn from you. Sometimes Dad just doesn't know anything and there's nothing you can do about that. Maybe trade off games with your friend so you mentor each others sons.
Two best stories: 1) since things are starting to open up in my neck of the woods I have been taking more regular youth matches. Normally my matches consist of US Soccer stuff (amateur, formerly DA, etc), college assignments (D1, D2, NAIA, JC) and then lastly local amateur leagues. Every now and then I’d work the local youth stuff. But I stay busy. Welp with Covid and not being able to get enough reps I picked up some local youth. One of the coaches on my match in the center recognized me from the local D1 men’s side. We spoke a bit prematch and then continued. I worked the U16 match in the middle and another official did the U19. After my second match the coach came up to me and said “you should’ve done the U-19 match, you’re a way better official than the U-19 referee.” He also mentioned I should’ve done next match and that he understands why I didn’t want to stick around and overload myself with matches. Its always nice when coaches value the work you put in and actually want you on their matches. 2) I got a call super late call last night from an assignor. They asked me if I was busy at the end of the month. They asked if I wanted a professional preseason match for two USL sides. So this will be my first professional match in the middle. Yay April 2021
college game this morning. As the first overtime period is winding down, the ball goes out for a throw-in at midfield on the bench side. "Sub, ref!" I glance at the clock. Under five seconds left. I couldn't think of a reason under NCAA rules to stop the clock, so the period ended with a substitution. That pretty much said it all about the game.
So I guess I shouldn't mention that, as I'm doing my last check to see if everybody is in their places, with bright shining faces, before we start the second half, I check the clock. It's already running....... "Clock! I haven't re-started the game yet." "Sorry. That's on us." Well, who else would it be 'on?' Must say, the usual problem is clock operators not starting the clock, rather than starting too early. Or, early in the second half, a home team player stumbles off the field, at mid field on the non-bench side. She raises the lid of a large garage container and sticks her head in. After maybe half a minute, I stop the clock and call for a sub for her. At least 10 minutes later, she is still standing there with her head in the garbage container. The trainer still hadn't come around the field to help her yet, either.
I had a HS game this year with an early 2H clock. GV and Home was losing something like 6-0. We get ready for the 2H kickoff and I look at the clock and it’s been going 45 seconds. Home coach tells be “I’m good. Please don’t ask them to reset it.” No problem coach. I got you covered.
Yep. I didn't want to go public with one from early in the season, but maybe the statute of limitations has expired. JV girls game. Also 6-0 at half. Two injuries, neither serious, and two goals making it 8-0. The center never makes the stop the clock signal and the clock never stops. I didn't say a word until we got to the car.
Some leagues around here want us to stop the clock on JV goals, and others don't. Varsity is generally scheduled 90 minutes after JV start, so any clock stoppage starts to bleed into the Varsity start (and end) time. Which *I* don't care about, but some people, like the person paying the facility manager OT, does. For those games where we stop the clock (and I'm heading out to do one in a few minutes), I signal to stop the clock but don't get all that insistent that they actually *do*.
We play 30 minutes a half for sub varsity. I have a ref friend who sets his watch for 32 and thats what we play with no clock stoppages.
This has been an issue in our state. I don't know of any scheduling problems, but some referees have taken it on themselves to simply not stop the clock for anything in a JV game. I have had to step up the volume to the message that they're paid for 40 minutes of playing time, by the rule, and we expect them to deliver it to the players.
Several other leagues have asked for running clock in JV unless it's for an extended injury stoppage. The ADs want the Varsity to more or less start on time. It's not the referees making that judgement.
Some JV teams here stop the clock. Some want it to run and the coaches say that. Some are 30 minute and some are 35. The ones playing 35 are all “35 minute running clock” coaches.
We do JV and Freshman games with 30 minute running clock. We have one Varsity coach that wants 35 minute JV halves. I haven't been there lately, so I don't know if he is getting the extra desired playing times. Few schools have ball chasers for sub-varsity games, so the players get even less playing time.
In Kansas City on the Missouri side, the times are hard and fast 40 Varsity, 35 JV, and 30 for C (JV and C with a running clock). On the Kansas side, the times are 40 for Varsity and all others are negotiated between the coaches pre-game! And you will get anything from two 20 minute halves up to two 40's (running clock). The longer halves don't bother me that much because my kid played alot of subvarsity, and for the kids its all about getting some playing time.
