Towson University has under performed under coach Vetorri for they last 2 seasons! No seniors on the current team. Will the pandemic Spring season help save her job?

Odd to post this on a day Towson beat James Madison 2-0.

I don't find it odd. People here post from all different angles. Parents, fans, coaches, players, etc

I know nothing about Towson other than the info below I just looked up:

JMU looks weak so far. JMU played one other game and tied Liberty. Liberty lost to Bellarmine (no disrespect intended, but who is Bellarmine?)

Towson was 4-13-1 and are 1-1-2 as of today. Not exactly a solid record.

Did more digging and my source said JMU did not play their best player #12 Wiseman. Player from England scores their goals and changes the game for them.

If there was a time for Towson to beat JMU it was when their best player was out.

Win is a win but I'd wait for more results to get a better picture of how things are progressing.

A program as well established as JMU, with a coach that has been regarded as a "recruiting guru"....should not have to depend on 1 player!

No question JMU did not give the job to Lombardo's Assoc Head Coach and went with the West Coast guy expecting big things.

Also no question that Towson must have known why KV was fired at Loyola down the street and decided to go with the local cheap option anyway. She did not make it into the Metro Conf field after years of Loyola dominating that conference and competing in the Patriot was never going to happen for her there. Towson knew what they were getting and so should anyone in the region paying attention. Classic example of not being really sure how much a school cares about the success of women's soccer. Unfortunately, too common a question that still has to be asked.

    approaching hot at Villanova?

They had their first winning season since 2009 "last year" (2019), in his third season, so while this year's results are concerning (no goals in conference play thru 4 games), I would be a little surprised if he's let go before the end of fall...doesn't mean that his seat isn't approaching hot...I don't have any insight here, but places aren't always as easy to win at (or haven't been historically) as they appear.

What remains to be seen is how many teams that are BAD this Spring will be able to recover to respectability for next Fall.

Some things I think an AD would have to consider are (1) did players choose to sit out this season and if so, how many and which ones, and (2) what impact has Covid otherwise had on the team, such as loss of practice time and players missing for games. If ever these was a year in which an AD should not look just at team results, this is it.

I don’t think she gets fired this year but i would imagine the seat at Miami is starting to warm up a little bit. They’ve looked awful the last 3 years and get worse each year.

Curious if anyone has any insight about Akron. Mentioned pre-covid as hot and they are 0-3 right now and haven't scored and were just outshot by Ohio 18-1. I don't know the answers to the pandemic-related questions posed by @cpthomas above but they are important. I've only met Herlihy a couple times but she seems like the kindof coach that would have translated her D2 success to a place like Akron. It hasn't happened for her there.

Also curious about UMD. Leone seems to have gotten a pass with the trouble and then changes in leadership at Maryland, and now covid. 2020 would be his 5th season and haven't heard any news of an extension for him there. Very different school than Akron ofcourse but both have to be tough gigs at places where the men's team is usually crushing it.

I would assume Akron is hot if they don’t have a good fall season. Or hot after this spring depending on when the contract is up. With revenues down administrations will be less likely to pay out a contract so it would have to be the end of the deal.

Eddie K, I also have wondered about Maryland. They really flubbed that hiring process and ended up having to pay good $ to get Leone. Took them a couple months to make the hire and while that was happening scores of recruits under previous coach Jon Morgan jumped ship and committed elsewhere. Because of that botched hire Leone came in with a very bare cupboard so it was understandable they struggled in 2016 and 2017. Shows the effect of when an incompetent administration can really handcuff a coaching staff. Maryland showed signs of life when the went .500 in Big 10 play in 2019. But now they're 0-6-2. Would have expected more from that program by now. Leone had it good winning the Ivy League at Harvard, different game in the Big 10.

Also expected more of Miami. That's another coach that I think was better suited for the mid-major level, Barnes was doing quite nicely at what has become a well-funded and well-supported George Washington program in the A10. Lost ACC games by scores of 2-8 and 0-6 last fall and then fell to Florida Atlantic a couple weeks ago which shouldn't happen to an ACC program. Would think she has to show some level of progress in the next 1-2 years. I agree that it seems they have digressed and I didn't think they had much room to fall further back after the MF Monroe debacle.

Anyone hear any news regarding Michigan State? Saxton did well there a number of years ago but their recent history has been abysmal. Last winning record was 2015. 1-5-1 now and lost to Michigan by a 3-7 score. He's been there 30 years so maybe the administration is now just letting him ride it out on his terms.

Lastly, what the heck is going on at Boston College? That was an elite program at one time where they were routinely a top 25 program and making Sweet 16s, went past that a couple years. Their only ACC win last fall was against Syracuse and somehow they lost to Rhode Island yesterday. Can't lose to a team like that as an ACC program. Foley never won any popularity contests at BC but that program was competitive when she was there. Since taking over Lowe has overseen a once very proud and competitive program go 1-15-1 in the ACC. Good number of kids on the transfer portal from BC too. That hire in 2019 was made with only a 1-year contract offer so that definitely turned off a number of candidates. The AD that made that questionable decision has since left to go to UCLA so not his problem anymore.

7-0 was a bad loss today, however the 4-0 loss to LaSalle and the 3-0 loss to Temple are worse IMO. It’s gotta be approaching hot now.

I'm starting to wonder about Drew Roff at Purdue. One winning season since 2015. Had a chance to finish in the top 3 this Spring and completely botched it. If Purdue loses to Indiana this week I think that'll be it for him. He's an attack minded Coach who can't seem to figure out how to score goals. That match against Iowa last weekend was just sad.

Here is the Purdue trend, starting a year before he became head coach:

    upload_2021-3-30_16-57-55.png

In the 8 years before Roff arrived, they started significantly better than they are now and headed consistently in the wrong direction, which likely is why they made a change. So, albeit the progress may be slow, they seem to be heading in the right direction.

As some posters have stated, it is not necessarily good to include this season as the basis for making a change. I certainly would not use this season as a basis given the trend.

As a matter of interest, you may note that the straight blue line (as well as the curved one) suggests that Purdue pretty consistently has been better than the red line indicates. The red line is the RPI and the blue Massey. Whereas the RPI discriminates against stronger conferences, Massey does better in that regard. Of course, that may be a level of sophistication above the sophistication of some ADs when it comes to women’s soccer.

1st, you rock for the data. 2nd, you rock for being a Portland fan. I love data - it tells us a lot. I'm not judging too much on this season, but I am judging enough to critique pre-season and roster choices. Like starting the season with your two best defenders on the bench (one of which hasn't returned with no reason why). Just one of a dozen different little examples of decision making that I think has his seat pretty warm. Sure, in big games Roff has been more consistent. But you can't also lose the gimme games, like losing to a one win Iowa team. AD's don't expect a team to win all the big games, but they certainly expect teams to win the games they should be winning, and he doesn't. Trendlines can only stay below the positive for so long. If Purdue can't put together a winning season in the Fall, I think he's done.

You may be close enough, but Covid and privacy has made information on lineups very hard to get and fluid at best. This season has been unique for many reasons. You make a great point that gets overlooked a lot. Teams should win the games they are expected to win, however that number is small for some teams especially if you remove many non conference options.
