I noticed they have a shuttle. Is that all the way to, say, Old Town TC, or is it just to the edge of campus (which I deem small, even in a wheelchair)?

It’s to the parking lots. One “line” from the west side runs to the far west parking lot. The other from the East gate runs to the season ticket holder lot at the Dept of Education up the street.

even just the SD on it's own works well.

Frankly I like the other one better (roundels are overplayed as it seems every rebrand includes one). That said, it's not a bad secondary.

Still no word on fans in the stands? Not that I'm surprised, just wish we knew. Especially since the MLS window just reopened for the Loyal now that Sacramento is very likely going to lose their spot.

Padres are expected to have 25% capacity so I'd figure Loyals will be the same for the season.

Pre-season though....I doubt they get anyone in the stands.

It says on their announcement for the pre-season schedule that all games will behind closed doors.

Newsom is changing the thresholds for the tiers so San Diego is essentially already in the Red Tier. If we can stay there or go lower than we'll have fans at the home opener. When ever that is.

Hasn't really been talked about here....but thoughts on if Loyal would consider talking to MLS if/when the Sacramento bid falls apart. They would have to bring in other investors but wonder if its doable renting your primary space or if they would have to try and build something.

I mean SSS stopped being a requirement a while ago for MLS it seems, it's more can the situation they're in be profitable at least in the short term. That's a question, but I don't see why it couldn't be at the Aztecs Stadium. And the stadium itself is being designed with future soccer use in mind. I think the bigger issue is the ownership group. Obviously they'd need to put a bigger money group together than the one that currently owns the Loyal. Maybe salvage some of the Soccer City guys or loop in the Padres owners (who apparently have been filthy freaking rich this whole time and were just biding their time).

Longer term they could try to build something, but I don't think it would be necessary unless Aztecs Stadium wouldn't be a profitable proposition for them.

But yeah I had the same thought, that Sac's misfortune could become San Diego's gain. Particularly now that the stadium is reality, the Loyal are reality, the fan interest is reality (or at least was before COVID showed up).

The article lists the five most likely MLS expansion cities which includes the seemingly obligatory listing of San Diego. But basically the San Diego section was just a rehashing of the Soccer City drama. Also made no reference to possibly playing in the SDSU stadium and apparently got no response from the Loyal when they asked if there was interest in an MLS bid. So basically nothing new.

I mean he's been saying that since before the Loyal had a name. I think their ultimate goal is MLS. But they definitely have the structure to stay in USL indefinitely if that's what happens.

Interesting. Far too early to really speculate on what that means. But it seems clear he's done with Sacramento if nothing else. If he brings the women's team to SD, so much the better I guess.

I just don't think he'd be an asset on any future MLS bid though. He pretty much nuked that bridge I'd think... unless that's what MLS wanted him to do because of the rumors MLS had been having buyers remorse about Sac?

    Teams Face-Off in Preseason Battle
Southern California has always been a hot bed for soccer and now in San Diego there is a USL Championship team as well as a NISA team — two American professional men’s soccer leagues which are under Major League Soccer. This weekend, the two pro teams played the San Diego Derby — a preseason warm up with bragging rights.
USL Championship’s San Diego Loyal dominated the first of two 75 minute sessions against NISA’s 1904 FC in a preseason San Diego Derby. With a dominating 6-0 performance at the Chula Vista Athlete Training Center on Sunday afternoon, the SD Loyal’s proved their power and agility on the pitch.
While the results may be lopsided, these are secondary to the importance of having two professional soccer clubs helping each other improve and showcasing the plethora of talent in the Southern California region.

Very interesting. I'm torn. Glad SD is getting the team. Not sure I want Burkle involved. That said if he's willing to possibly revisit MLS as well and assist the Loyal in making the jump to MLS? But he's also a snake after how he treated Sac?
