Saw on twitter last week there was a tourney in AZ with 500 teams, 450 of them from out of state. Just baffling. College coaches in attendance to take the virus back to their towns too...

When community spread is low I'm all for playing, but this takes it to the extreme. Playing soccer vs traveling to a mega tournament are two totally different things. You can play soccer locally. I'll wager that 95% of these teams can get the same competitive challenge within 20-mile radius of their home field. It's irresponsible.

But what else is new. What I've realized over the past few months is that if they like it or want to do it, people will rationalize why it is okay to do so.

Again, probably PROBABLY won't happen on the field. But with everything else involved: hotel, meals, car pools, etc.

The old and infirmed plea, wasn't effective. So people need to consider the healthcare workers in all this.

Healthcare workers in AZ should go on strike in protest. They are bearing the brunt of this.

Checking in. Any reports of COVID transmission during indoor soccer in your neck of the woods? None here, although they shut things down in early December and just reopened indoor sports.Cases spiked dramatically here. Cases and hospitalizations coming down from the post Thanksgiving and Christmas spike. New Year’s Eve cases still sorting themselves out, but downward trend.

Last week new cases spiked 43% in AZ. Too many people here think refusing to take mitigation efforts is a political statement in support of Trump. Meanwhile I see no evidence of vaccination among doctors and nurses treating patients in my county. The transmission is so massive that nobody will be able to track it with any certainty.

I have on average 4 appointments a week, and none of the people treating me have had even their first shot. I expect that officials are still trying to vaccinate the workers in the hospital Covid wards. Not a good sign. I trust that Biden will improve things.

I don't know of any cases from soccer. I think adults indoor were only shut down for a week. I think they're starting kids back up this month.

There is no indoor soccer here this winter. The club has added a bunch of outdoor winter clinics

I intended to do outdoor training with my 19Us as weather allowed over the winter, but I'm not risking that until and unless our Covid numbers go down significantly around here. We're on a red/orange/yellow rating system in Indiana, and my county and the surrounding counties where my players come from are all either red or borderline red.

We are gearing up for the spring and decided to offer families the option of playing on a team that wears masks during games. Roughly 10% of our players asked for this option.

Even though I don't think masks are needed on the field, I will be coaching in one of these divisions this season

    .

Got back to indoor recently, reluctantly. Numbers had gone down significantly here. Our local hospital was at ICU surge levels during the holidays.

100% of kids playing were masked up. They just roll with it.

I've heard through the grapevine a lot of these LA county and Orange County coaches that traveled to AZ ended up contracting Covid. Many of the players did as well. I believe its due to hotel stays and not actual transmission during play.

My teams continued playing indoor soccer during this period. We started in November.

No outbreaks or contractions. Although, the facility would temperature check, give you hand sanitizer, limit the parents to only observe from an open door in the back, and require masks of coaches. I would take the extra step of asking my players to keep the mask on while playing. It was tough for them to play with it on. Some would take it off as the game progressed. Apparently, its not exactly easy to breath through it while playing. (Not a political statement. Just anecdote of my observation to my players reactions of wearing mask while playing indoor at a fairly high pace.)

We are starting back up indoor U8. Finally. Only one parent allowed in per kid. My kid is also playing in several pickup games a week, so this is a good time for growth.

I was concerned about my low blood oxygen level during a visit to my cardiologist. He simply had me remove the mask and measured again. The mask made a 5 point difference (97 instead of 92) while resting!

Wow that's interesting. The articles and videos I have seen made it look like there was no difference in oxygen.

Not surprised, but have also seen the opposite. Players here, adults and kids, have been wearing masks and there's no complaints—the human body is super adaptive. Further we've actually done the tests personally and online of testing our blood oxygen levels with a pulse oximeter. No change. This is for soccer, running, long hikes, tennis.

I heard yesterday that local lacrosse is no longer requiring masks indoors, because pediatricians feel there may be an oxygen intake issue on masks on top of a mouthguard.

Further noting that every kid has been wearing mask + mouthguard since January (at least). Which is not to say there's some kids struggling to breathe but not able to feel like they can say something about it. Also interesting that almost all willingly wear a mouthguard but bitch about wearing a mask.
