Interview: https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2021/02/27/paul-arriola-premier-league-mls/ “It’s a weird situation,” Arriola said. “You’re on loan, but because there’s no option to buy, you’re technically a D.C. United player still, right? So how do you manage both without leaning too far one way or too far the other way?”

Swansea for the second game in a row grab an absurdly late injury time winning goal off a penalty kick. Arriola DNP. On the one hand I suppose you can't blame the manager for not changing things up too much when the team is still on pace for automatic promotion (having played 2 games fewer than the teams above them). On the other hand, they're really riding their luck right now, and I continue to find it baffling how their manager only uses 2 of their 5 available subs in a game like this.
I don't get why they're utilizing him as a striker instead of a wing-back. They could have increased his modest value on the field, instead they decreased it. He's pretty much just a short-term loanee who's insurance in case of attrition. Which is fine. Morris was the guy they seemingly had plans for short and long term. But things don't always go as planned.
People that spend their days hunting down "offensive" tweets made by teenagers are a special breed of loser.
It was a Cardiff fan who thinks he’s the Welsh Karl Rove or something — going for the oppo dump on his rivals. In the situation, it is right for Arriola to apologize, but then it’s time to move on.
Without turning this into a politics thread, what were the tweets about? I’d guess they were homophobic since they were made by a teenager....
Just your typical kid's jokes. Not funny, but absolutely nothing that could offend anybody. We all saw it @PaulArriola pic.twitter.com/vz3V8w1OC7— dan (@_ccfcdan) March 4, 2021
Happens at home, my manager saw a tweet I made a long time ago regarding lyrics I cited with racial slurs when I was 16, I was fired the next day after she decided to check up what I post, since then my social media (especially Twitter) is private.
Maybe not you but I'd imagine some might have been. It's just a lot easier nowadays to voice how offended you are.
that's different. much different. His dad was (the rightfully much-maligned) coach of the USMNT. he wasn't some anonymous kid in a suburban basement somewhere.....
It’s more a case of that tweet becoming a meme than anyone being seriously mad at Klinsmann. It wasn’t even that offensive, just awkward and stupidly phrased in a memorable manner.
It’s also perfectly ok to be offended by something. The tweets themselves are more stupid than anything but we can’t pick and choose what’s ok for other people to be offended by.
To me, the issue was never what the kid tweeted. It’s my firm belief that he was just repeating thoughts and attitudes he heard at family dinners.
Could be, but based upon my experience teaching in inner city schools, it could be a blend, or entirely peer related depending upon whom he hung out with. At those schools I worked at in Oakland, and now Reno, hearing that word in the hallways was a monthly, sometimes weekly, and daily (in Oakland) experience, but it was something that seemed most exclusive to kids who were Latino, African-American, and Asian, though not entirely, and maybe Arriola was one of those kids who was so used to playing exclusively with minority kids that he got some kind of pass about it (I have seen that, but it's been quite rare). Do agree that some of the lines definitely sound like things that would come from family rather than friends (the swimming comment for instance).
Paul Arriola is a Mexican kid from Chula Vista. Chula Vista borders TJ, 60% Hispanics population and Spanish is the first language.
