Hard to imagine a worse loan outcome. That's a seriously tough break. All we can do is wish him a quick recovery.

WTF is it with Americans and ACLs? They're an occupational hazard, sure, but I simply cannot recall any other nationality that has its quality players suffering career-altering/ending ACL injuries this frequently in such a small sample size.

This may be an injury that changes the attitude of MLS teams toward letting guys go off on loan. Sometimes players need an actual off-season for a reason. Playing an MLS season and then running right out to play on loan is really hard on a player. And if I'm honest, were I an MLS owner I would have very little to no interest in taking a chance my players would come back injured from these loans. You want my guy, buy him.

My guess is that the transfer market being devastated by the pandemic has forced some clubs into entering into riskier or more unconventional transfer arrangements than they'd prefer. I mean the drop in transfer activity and fees in the top leagues is really extreme when you start to dig into the numbers.

I have a few examples in mind (including Brian Rodriguez), but just take Cannon and Morris for instance. From what I gather, both players informed their clubs' management that they wanted to move within the past year or so. I'm guessing both clubs realized that the offers they were subsequently getting were not the type of offers they were receiving (or would have been receiving) in January 2020.

I think their clubs took a gamble at that point to allow the players to leave immediately for short-term destinations while leaving open the possibility that the players would recover their value by the time of a summer 2021 sale. In Morris's case, that could be a full transfer to the most expensive league in the world if Swansea continues their form and achieves promotion. In Cannon's case, that would be a sell-on fee to a different club, on top of the fee that Boavista already paid, with the cumulative total hopefully being as high as it would have been a year ago.

In both cases, I think the clubs were gambling on their players recovering their full market value through some combination of the global health situation improving and the players impressing in their short term stints. I suspect these are gambles that those clubs would not be inclined or forced to make in different market conditions.

It reminds me of the Omar Gonzalez loan to Nurnberg when he tore his ACL in his first training session (by Timmy Chandler). LAG were very angry about it.

It might limit loans for good players but not great players

It won't affect the star players like Jordan who earned this loan after incredible service to Seattle.

It won't affect the loans of young players who don't play much for their MLS teams (like Servania to St. Polten). It's worth the risk of sending those players abroad to get time

It might affect loans for players like Arriola, Dike, etc.

Have to question the wisdom of sending a hard-ridden Morris into a new continent with all the lifestyle changes that that incurs on little to no rest...the perfect recipe for injury.

It does appear the team was doing its best to limit his playing time early in his loan.

So he's back to Seattle for surgery/rehab? He came back very well from this last time so hopefully he can do the same this time. Sadly this probably limits his ceiling, at least in terms of where he can go and what he could compete for, but other guys have come back from worse. Fingers crossed!

I didn't really understand these loans for a portion of the MLS season in the first place. Was it the clubs' hope that the players would come back supremely fit and sharper than they would be if they had preseason training and early season MLS games with the team? If so, I can't see how this flukey injury to a kid who has a history of one ACL (makes him statistically much higher risk for another) makes it less likely to want to loan a player out.

This ACL tear was likely to happen either here or at Swansea. I truly don't think the move was responsible. Obviously we'll never know but the odds of an ACL tear in an otherwise healthy kid is rather low. Where ever the player is training balls to the wall for high level professional soccer is where the ACL is going to blow.

Now, if you were telling me it was a massive hamstring injury or blown out Achilles after 6 games in 12 days, I'd agree with you.

I think you're right on here. Players like Jordan are highly competitive people. They are going to want to continue to test themselves at the highest levels they can - and for now that means playing in Europe when the right opportunity presents itself.

One thing that Brian or others may know, that I'd be curious about, is what form of offsets or terms MLS clubs (or any club for that matter) might have in these loan deals for additional compensation in the event their star player is injured?

If he could just get back to where he was by next year, he’ll still be in the running to make the roster. But I doubt he’s in consideration for a starting spot ~ unless all goes to hell.
