They've played three at the back quite a bit this season, with Trippier as wing back. 5 assists in 14 games isn't a bad return, and WhoScored have him with the 7th highest rating in La Liga this year.
That's not true at all. In Simeone's system the fullbacks are often among the most advanced players on the pitch, even with a back four.
Trippier's also played the wing-back role for England plenty of times so it's a bit of a non-issue. It's a young squad, and I wouldn't be in a mad rush to bin an experienced and reliable player who's arguably having a better season than any of his competition.
Yeah, I’ve no issue with Trippier being in the squad to play in his position on the right. I just don’t want to see him as cover for the left hand side where we have looked unbalanced and it gives us nothing from an attacking point of view. Square pegs in round holes isn’t what we should be doing.
Really rough decisions, if Trippier goes then who is left behind; James or TAA? TAA is a proven big game player and James is ridiculously well rounded.
Well, we all know Southgate will pick them all at the expense of a left back! I hate it but it’s just going to happen. Then again, we may get lucky and when the finals come around we might still have expanded Squads due to Covid and Countries wanting their own bubbles and not having to call up replacements from outside their bubbles so maybe 28-30 man Squads might be an option and in that case Southgate might just take an extra left back.
I've no problem with trippier as a player. Hes an excellent fullback. Just his age. He will be 31 this year and by the time the world Cup starts he will be 32. I just think we should be planning for the future
the best player for the position is the right player, if he would be 3rd choice then by all means take someone younger but Trippier would likely be first choice in which case his age is immaterial
I'm speaking about retirement. Players usually retire from international football around 32/34. We don't want to go into future tournaments with young players with no tournament experience. If he carries on then great but I would like to see James in the squad even to gain experience. If trent gets injured then we would be relying on james stepping up in big game tournaments.
Am I right in thinking that we normally name a 28 player pre-tournament training camp which is then whittled down to 23 midway through the camp with 5 on standby?
surely you pick the best players for the tournament, regardless of age?. I don’t think we should just pick players for future tournaments. It’s about now. 31 isn’t exactly old either. look at Vardy he’s one of the best players in the league, I’d have him in our squad any day. De Bruyne is 30. tripper right now is better then James and is proving it for the best team in Spain. James is very inconsistent and it looks like might not be first choice for Chelsea either
Will be an absolute travesty if Musiala gets called up over Maddison. Doubt Southgate would sink that low anyway. Even Jones is ahead of Musiala.
There are other RBs around so it;'s hardly James and TAA or bust. Also, I think if we prioritise younger players for the future then that future may never come. As things stand we have two big tournaments in the next 2 years and we should pick the best players regardless of age, as I'd rather try and win those than be looking at the next things down the road.
Most assists in Europe's top five leagues + #UCL + #UEL since the start of 2018-19:◎ Lionel Messi (45)◎ Ángel Di Maréia (44)◎ Thomas Müller (44)◉ Jadon Sancho (43)◎ Kevin De Bruyne (42)Sancho is at least nine years younger than any other player in the top five. 🤯 pic.twitter.com/kla5uvsOqh— Squawka (@Squawka) February 17, 2021
When's the last time we had this kind of depth in attacking talent? Assuming we were playing a 4-2-3-1 (which we aren't...) I can see at least four quality quartets, may be more: Rashford, Mount, Sterling - Kane Grealish, Maddison, Foden - DCL Barnes, Barkley, Sancho - Abraham Saka, Smith-Rowe, Hudson-Odoi - Ings Musiala (or Bowen), Loftus-Cheek, Greenwood - Watkins That still leaves the likes of Ali, Lingard, Bamford, Antonio etc.
Pity Dean Henderson didn't go on loan again. Just had another solid performance in the Europa League, not as good with his feet but will make less mistakes than Pickford.
10+ - Since the start of last season, Bukayo Saka (19y 166d) is the youngest Premier League player to have reached double figures for goals (10) and assists (16) across all competitions. Hope. pic.twitter.com/cQMN2bOKvx— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) February 18, 2021
Absolutely not with Foden. It does make Grealish stand out more since everybody relies on him to be a pseudo No. 10.
