    That escalated quickly.

But, to be fair, it's not like the USL is peaches and cream right now. MLS pulled out some reserve teams, a few clubs have either folded (Saint Louis FC) or dropped down to League One (North Carolina FC & Charlotte Independence), and I don't know if they will even start.

It feels like a catch-22: the moment you stop playing, the odds of you ever fielding a team again reduces dramatically, but playing without fans is about as productive as lighting your wallet on fire.

Even USL-C is a mostly academic exercise: there’s just not enough of a following to justify a broadcast only season.

Not ever USL-C club has a local TV deal, and ESPN+ isn't a "national" deal. Playing without an audience and being required to get a streaming service is not the ideal solution, and I highly expect this season to be limited to a few clubs that play in states that are more open to sports and can allow for fans.

I've had similar debates on HFBoards about minor league hockey where some teams have skipped the ECHL and SPHL seasons, where some users have supported the move of skipping a season as they won't have to waste resources on rent, player salaries, insurance, and travel on what will most likely be a loss, but for the teams that are still playing, they are still able to make some kind of revenue from ticket sales, concessions (mostly... unless you're Fort Wayne), parking, and ads on the ice and around the rink. The teams that are idle aren't spending, but aside from merch and possible season ticket sales, they aren't earning either, and they still have expenses.

It's a difficult time for lower level and niche sports.

    Also there's history behind it.

    Hope they roll with Sting.

National Independent Soccer Association released their own Q&A section on National Independent Soccer Association Nation, their new amateur league set to begin in Spring 2021. Surely nothing will go wrong from managing two leagues in a very short time period during a pandemic.

No word if National Independent Soccer Association Network twitter account has taken notice of it, or if the league will launch a news network channel called National Independent Soccer Association News Network.

I realize that a lot of this is because the Cosmos are the club that everyone loves to hate, but I find the backlash to their "hiatus" to be really bizarre:
    • They don't have a stadium, and even if they did, who knows when they could actually have fans
    • The travel restrictions for returning from out of state to NY seem completely unmanageable (n.b. I have no idea what New Amsterdam's plan for handling this may be)
    • Of all lower league teams, due to the wealth of their owner, they are the one of the most likely to be able to return from a hiatus
Although I would expect the bad takes from FirstNameBunchOfNumbers on Twitter, I was really surprised when the Knights who say NISA guys piled up on them. Sure, the track record for clubs going on hiatus is bad, but when the Cosmos' near-term position is put in perspective, it doesn't immediately scream "ROCCO CLEARLY NEEDS TO SELL THE CLUB" to me.

I mean, maybe Rocco is tired of the team and ready to get rid of it, but I'm not sure any of this really is evidence of that.

I can understand not playing in the spring but this is going to be longer. The lack of a stadium is a seriously big issue and there is little hope for a quick solution. The other big issue is Rocco, he has Fiorentina now and he's spending big there, long term big money. I would think he prefers to sell the Cosmos now, so be it. Rocco bought for 5M. For a new owner the bigger investment is going to be in a stadium. With the pandemic effecting the world's economy nothing is going happen for quite a while.

The stadium thing seems like it would be the biggest variable to me: the club is only worth what the brand is worth right now since they have no permanent place to play; play in a league that currently (without being able to have gate receipts) just siphons money from the owners’ pockets; and multiple possible stadium locations on the horizon that would instantly, massively, increase the value of the club.
Unlike a lot of other teams, Rocco can afford to sit on the club: a hiatus isn’t a death sentence like it would be for practically any other team. The Cosmos will be in no worse shape if and when they start up again. In contrast to other teams like SD 1904 or Stumptown who basically have to start over from scratch.

So, sure, it’s possible that Rocco has lost interest in the Cosmos, but it’s also very possible that he’s lost interest in devaluing the brand until he can actually do something productive with it. Let’s face it: playing in the NISA spring season, under these conditions, does nothing for Rocco or the Cosmos. Compare that to New Amsterdam, Chattanooga FC, DCFC, etc. who have no value unless they are actively playing.

Looked at NISA's expansion teams and man, the names are something that you see in a parody Football Manager create a team game.

    • Point Chicago/Chicago House - yikes
    • Teamsterz - not going to bother with this one.
    • Flower City Union - newspaper company or freemason organization?
    • Maryland Bobcats - [State name] [Recycled former NBA team name]

Then you have three teams "on hiatus"

    • NY Cosmos - obvious and self-explanatory.
    • 1904 FC - I guess they'll come back without fans in the game? I mean they are pretty much lucked out since the NFL Stadium over there is being demolished, and the Loyal beat them to the punch.
    • Stumptown - Uhhh......

That leaves with 7 teams in the Spring? I mean, the Cosmos didn't explicably say they are coming back in 2021, or 2022...

As a person who hated 2.0 (Indy Eleven fan), can't say I feel bad for the Cosmos, but... the team represents missed chances and blown opportunities.

NISA released their Spring schedule. The changes are confusing and again, not a fan of the apertura/clausura model. Hopefully it's temporary.

    Key takeaways:

Wouldn't it be a major PITA bringing in 9 teams especially in San Diego, Los Angeles into Chattanooga for 1 1/2 weeks? I mean, we are talking about connecting flights from flyover country. Then, regular play in respective home markets a couple days after? Playoffs in Detroit? Some real travel expenses there.

Maryland Bobcats is joining earlier than expected. Can't say that's a good idea. Virtually there's no chatter of the team in the area except in social media.

Stumptown and 1904 FC are back.

They going to bring fans in the game. In Chattanooga, at least.

So 3 groups of three teams for the tournament in Chattanooga. That means each match-day 3 teams have a bye. It takes 3 match-days to get all the group stage games in. Then semifinals with group winners and best 2nd place? Then the final. Or at least a semifinal with two group winners to get to face the other group winner, same number of match-days.

So a total of 5 match-days in 13 total calendar days means games on Tuesday, Friday, Monday, Thursday, Sunday. I guess that works.

Peter Wilt announces Chicago House is the team's name; colors are black, green, and orange. Unusual name and colors which I think Wilt can use well to promote the new club. They begin play in August. It's going to be fun to see if Wilt can work his magic again.

I was pretty meh on House and Point, but figured it didn’t matter as long it meant something to somebody in Chicago, but I do like it with the context of the logo.

Terrible name and logo notwithstanding, their season ticket prices are unreasonably expensive for a D3 team - $312. I'd imagine that renting SeatGeek Stadium did not come cheap.

Normally Peter Wilt does a good job, but he didn't have luck in Chicago that wasn't the Fire. Previously it was the indoor soccer team, now I'm not so optimistic this would be successful. At least it can be used for real estate.
