According to this article https://www.mlssoccer.com/glossary/targeted-allocation-money he needs to make more than 480K (in 2017 money) so TAM can be used to lower the cap hit. My guess is he is going to make ~500K
I don't see why any MLS team would pay him $500,000.00. He hasn't had a productive season in 5 years now. That's a lot of money. I'm not sure any clubs in Europe are going to be willing to pay him that much.
He can say he played for the NT for a few years and he was a regular in the Bundesliga for a few seasons. That plus a semi-decent agent can get things done.
RSL is being run by the league right now. A short term, free transfer decent name that also tosses a lifeline to a USMNT player fits in more or less with what you’d want. It’s not a bad move, even if they did overpay on salary.
Dell Loy Hansen, their former owner, is a racist and sexist old fart. After a particularly obvious recent incident (not the first, either) where he was forced to apologize the league forced him out. He had until, I believe, the end of 2020 to try to sell the club on his own. He wasn't successful at selling so the league took over the club from him until they sell it. This article gives an overview of the state of things under Dell Loy Hansen. https://www.sltrib.com/sports/rsl/2020/09/06/inside-rsls-toxic/
Sad. Just depressing what injuries can do to a player. Hope he can transition into coaching over time. His experience at the top levels would be great for younger kids to learn from.
Good take by whoever that is on Reddit. I'm not sure why that person isn't posting that kind of stuff here where it matters!
One thing is for sure: Hamburg fans won't be forgetting him any time soon. He's going to become a noun in Germany, like Altidore is in England.
Gotta say very few Yanks have been in a situation where they were a club's top earner and even rarer for them to be making so much that they'd rather be benched than to leave for lesser wages.
I’m pretty confident that he can be decent in MLS. He probably won’t be especially “good”, but decent.
Bobby is a head case. If he’s not physically shot then he could regain his Bundesliga II form if he gets his head on straight.
Provided he's fit, I think he'll do pretty well at RSL. They aren't totally inept, nor are they good either. Perfect lane for Wood's style where he wants to get in behind but still needs some service. Wood didn't make it work for some bad teams in the BL, then it was probably a combo of Hamburg holding it against him they got relegated, and not being a good fit for a top team in their league. Also hard for him to find earlier moves with that salary. He chose that over competitive interests for a couple years. You forget he's only 28. If injuries haven't slowed him down too much he could be effective enough into his mid 30's. So potentially a lengthy career ahead of him still domestically. And internationally, it's not out of the realm of possibility to work his way back in, at some capacity, given most of the alternatives are so young & unproven.
Evidence? I'm not doubting you as I've been thinking that there's likely been something psychological behind his collapse in PT, but "head case" is a pretty strong term.
You mean won the world cup, la liga, FA Cup and Copa Del Rey, scored over 20 international goals and placed on the Balon d'orr multiple times? Hmm... okay, I'll take it...
