But then there is a precident set. What if Biden doesn't exit the WH by 12:00pm? What if he is still there at 12:02pm? Do the US Marshals come and arrest him for trespassing?

While it would be fun to see Individual One forcefully removed, it is more of a hostage situation in which law enforcement tries to talk him out of it and get him to surrender.

His post POTUS detail’s primary concern is to protect him from injury...even if it would be completely his fault. Could they let others come in and cart him off? Yeah. But it’s far easier to make staying completely unappealing to him. As others have said: keep him in the residential side, cut the power to outlets so he can’t keep his phone charged, turn off the cable, crank up the heat, empty the fridge. That sorta thing.

If it’s 85 degrees in there and he has no screens to stare at, his fat ass isn’t staying long.

I have a better idea: release about 50-75 pheasants into the White House and let Dick Cheney and a few buddies go in to shoot them.

I dunno.. It is rather "amusing" to watch the police and right wing extremists prove everything that has been said about them by BLM...

It's spooky, truly scary. I mean, I have memories, I grew up with shit like this, but nowadays this doesn't happen even in Argentina anymore. To see it happen in the US...

The next step would be for the military to come in numbers to "bring back order" and take power. I am hopeful that this is something that will not happen in the US, but what is happening is unprecedented here.

These are not radicals or anarchists taking advantage of a peaceful protest to create chaos. This is much bigger than that. These are people who were called into DC and incited into violence by the president of the United States, who doesn't want to give up his power after losing an election. It is a sorry attempt and I do expect it to fail, but it is a real illegal coup d'etat attempt organized by Donald Trump.

Do you guys who were born and grew up here ever think that you'd see the day when something like this could happen?

Diminshed democracy, yes. I think any cursory glance at American history makes that clear.

Followers of a personality cult storming the Capitol because they're mad about an election? Didn't really see that coming. Not that I didn't think it couldn't happen, but I always thought that, in the unlikely event of something like that happening, it would be someone more competent and charismatic that drove it.

I was a history major in college and spent a ton of time learning about various dictatorial personality cults throughout history (Trujillo in the Dominican Republic, in particular), so like...their existence and development didn't seem like anything impossible. But for Donald Trump to be the idiot to drive it is still surprising.

I read this Sinclair Lewis novel at the start of 2020. Kind of instructive.

It's too soon to pick an exact ranking, but this is one of the 10 worst days in American history.

Yeah, I get that feeling. There may be a silver lining, though. Maybe this will wake up Americans. I've already talked to a couple of people at work who've been Trump apologists and are repudiating him now, admitting that "he went too far". Then again, this is California, I don't know if it will translate into other parts of the country in the same way.

The memory of a bunch of white supremacist MAGA cultists taking over the Capitol, encouraged by the sitting President, will be short?

I really don't think so. I am cynical as hell, and this is the kind of day that no one forgets.

    I don't agree with that.

But regardless, icons matter. People storming the Capitol has more emotional resonance than the bombing of a nondescript federal building in Oklahoma City.

If the Statue of Liberty was destroyed with no one in it, that would have more emotional impact than if a random office building in Arlington collapsed and killed 800 people. Think like, Notre Dame fire.

No. But this has been brewing for a long time. I never thought we would elect a President who had called to kill 5 innocent teenagers, and after that I never thought that we would elect a President who wouldn't commit to abiding by the election's results (which he had said during the 2016 campaign), and so forth.

The bombing wasn't an issue in the 1996 campaign just like this won't be an issue in '24. History will tell.

I didn't say it would be a presidential campaign issue. I was arguing against the idea that the "memory of this will be short."

Though I still dispute that argument too. Timothy McVeigh wasn't directly encouraged to bomb the Murrah building by Bob Dole and the Republican Party. Today's domestic terrorists were literally told to march on the Capitol by the President, and have been told for years, by both the President and the Republican Party, that this election was going to be stolen from them. The two situations aren't related enough to meaningfully compare to one another.

If it was really memorable at least one campaigner would have tried to use it against the other. What do people do when unpleasant realities like the one you mentioned come up? They try to forget them and they succeed in most part.

    Oh look.....an other Republican Nazi.....

“Newly sworn-in Rep. Mary Miller (R-IL) was under intense criticism from fellow lawmakers and others on Wednesday over comments she made during a speech in Washington, D.C., in which she invoked Adolf Hitler,” the Chicago Tribune reports.

Said Miller, on video: “If we win a few elections, we’re still going to be losing unless we win the hearts and minds of our children. This is the battle. Hitler was right on one thing. He said, ‘Whoever has the youth has the future.'”

Even still, it kind of goes against the narrative that Dems don't fight.

Pelosi played a very cynical game both before the Presidential election - denying Trump a stimulus, and then afterwards - and it paid off big time.
