I was VERY amused last night that the captioning (which uses a form of steno based on phonemes) kept going with Columbo Screw every time the announcer said the full name.

    Pulling for Minnesota now.

I am deeply annoyed by that ending.

I'm not sure why no one has mentioned Crew Stadium's most famous event.

Paul Arriola did us proud last night - hasn't missed a beat.

I loved seeing that goal because of someone ranting in the DC United subreddit last week that Arriola didn't deserve a spot on the USMNT roster because he didn't play all season.

Every time I start thinking I should find additional places to discuss DC United I stumble into reasons not to bother. :)

Deserve wasn't the word I'd use. But he has experience with the team and was "fit" and healthy.

Arriola will almost certainly be on the World Cup roster if the US qualifies. If "deserve" isn't the word you'd use, what word would you use?

I'm with you, in that I think form should be a big determinant of whether you're called up in a given window. But in this case, it was a very informal camp with a lot of prospects, and they seem to have done it specifically to keep Paul progressing in his recovery. That's the neon sign that he's on the plane. There's two long years between now and then, which is a developmental eternity for some of the U-23s just now coming into the mix. I'm not sure that remains true, but Berhalter certainly likes what Paul brings to the table.

So there we are with MLS Cup tonight, I am frankly disappointed that it's shown at 8:30pm on a saturday night, not for me of course since it's a very convenient time, but bcs if you are trying to make more popular your product and sell it also somewhere else, you have to make it accessible and visible. So, if your target outside of the US is Asia it may work, but if it's Europe a game starting somewhere between 1:30am and 3:30am depending where you are on the continent ain't gonna work.
Years ago, I was in Milan for MLS Cup, they had a viewing party at a pub, the game was TFC-Seattle 2-0 and it was playing at 4:30pm on the east coast, so it was 10:30 at night in Italy, there was a 30 some crowd that came on purpose for the game, but a lot more people wattched it bcs the pub was pretty full and right before there was a Juve-Inter game, so people stayed also beyond that game and watched MLS Cup. It was fun.
If MLS is not trying to make their product more accessible to other countries as well, maybe that should start thinking about it. They have a few regular season games that show around 9pm or so CET, so why not also have the final accessible, out of all games? This is something I don't really get.

Very happy Columbus won, the only thing I like of the sounders is the Cascadia flag on the back of their shirts.

Columbus was clinical in that match. Young Morris did a great Nagbe impersonation and Santos really wasn't missed. If Diaz had better shooting/passing boots, Columbus should have scored twice more.

Really impressed by Zelarayan. He cost $7 million but he did what a DP should do, impose himself on the game. Seattle had no answer for him at all.

Two wistful notes: 1)seeing EZ behind Porter and wondering what he did wrong in the interviews and 2)remembering that Porter snubbed DCU after Payne & Co. offered him a contract. Definitely a good career move for Porter though.

Well, maybe it's not decided yet, and for sure he wasn't going to miss MLS Cup

I remember that. He prefered to keep his job at some college rather than coming to a DCU organization that was starting to fall apart. Guess he didn't want to start with the wrong foot. Good move. A year or two later he became an MLS coach (was it Portland right away?)

Just a side note, Columbus is the first MLS team to win the final with a 3 goals margin.

If I remember correctly, the problem people and by extension possible managers had with Payne is that he had a reputation of interfering with technical decision-making.

To be fair, Montreal won their game. It just wasn't enough to advance.

Its actually kind of surprising that it took 25 years to get this lopsided of a final. I'd expect that we'd have long since had a game where the losing team chased and chased hard to get the goal they needed, only to end up giving up a couple.
The thing I like about the Sounders is that they're not in the east.
As long as we're not going to contend ... which is forever, I am good with these sorts of endings as one of 2 winners of a CONCACAF trophy.

I thought Garber's interview last week about merging with LigaMX was really frank and realistic. The challenges that merger has are the same that pro/rel have. You've got 30 or so ownership groups who have bought into one thing which would have to change its financial risk structure substantially to accommodate it. Based on that, I just don't see it ever happening. I also don't think it should happen. CONCACAF will merge with CONMEBOL before MLS and LigaMX merge.

I'd also like to see the 2020 payrolls and see if the decade long trend of top third spending teams making/winning the final is preserved or not.

Yeah, an MLS/Liga MX merger can't really happen if MLS is still hamstrung by single entity and salary caps.

Also, @PSURoss, Paul Tenorio said MLSPA isn't releasing 2020 player salaries this year, so we'll never get to know exactly what teams spent this year.

I am against a merger of MLS / Liga MX for many reasons, but I am all in favor of pro/rel. Sometimes in the future it will happen, maybe it will be an "internal" MLS thing if there will be enough teams (like 32 for example) and the league will be split in MLS1 and MLS2, because honestly, the way it is now may make sense compared to other American sports but gives you absolutely zero credibility at an international level.

What if the new league was 12 MLS teams and 8 Liga MX teams, and the bottom 3 MLS finishers in the new league were relegated to regular 'ol MLS, and the bottom two MX finishers were relegated to Liga MX?

So, some sort of North American "Super League"? With pro/rel.
I mean, anything could be but with 32 teams or possibly more in the long run, I see an internal MLS split more feasible.
