my guess is we will see an announcement that Randy Waldrum will be leaving Pitt very soon. The big question will be if his son leaves with him. All of that is now water under the bridge. This time, the 64-year-old has accepted the job, but created a bit of confusion when he suggested in his initial statement on social media that he would combine the job with his current post at Pittsburgh. Interesting bit of news coming from American on the men’s side. David Nakhid did not get an interview for the open men’s coach position in late 2018. American made a strong hire with Zach Simol instead (a white coach with good previous assistant coach experience at Georgetown, Yale, and BC), but many were surprised Nakhid didn’t even at least get an interview and strong consideration for the position given his ties and accomplishments. Nakhid is a school alum and is African-American, was a very good player at American, played professionally in Europe, and was on the Trinidad and Tobago coaching staff as an assistant at the 2006 World Cup. Shocked someone with that resume and an alum couldn’t even get an interview. He has a racial discrimination lawsuit against American. I for one am really interested in seeing where this goes and if it may lead to changes in hiring practices. Many people on this board have called out when coaching hire committees have only interviewed female candidates, or hire a female candidate when there were male candidates that were vastly more qualified and experienced. But they never get met with any kind of legal recourse. Happens with minority candidates as well and this current scenario is another example. Glad to see Nakhid call out this practice and then interested in seeing ultimately what happens as this lawsuit gets played out (have heard many complaints about when something like this happens; this is the first time I am hearing about someone actually holding an institution legally accountable for it). Perhaps we are seeing ramifications of this already. The athletics department at American hasn’t had an African-American head coach for any sport since 2004. I can't imagine that the plaintiff's lawsuit would have any merit. I mean, if his lawyers can turn up proof that the American athletic director or others at the school specifically do not wish to hire minorities, then he'd have a case. But failing that, I can't see it--unless there is a law mandating that minorities should be interviewed. Is there such a law? I think organizations /should/ want to interview and/or hire minority job candidates--and I can understand this guy's frustration--but at the end of the day, I, for one, don't believe organizations should be forced to interview or hire anyone based on gender, race, religion. Job hires almost always involve a measure of subjectivity, and maybe bias of one kind or another factors into that subjectivity occasionally, but it seems the proverbial slippery slope to me.
Zero college coaching experience (at least anything in the recent past - 2002-present). I can see why he wouldn’t get an interview. A struggling program needs a strong presence, which is most commonly linked to recruiting. Maybe he is a great candidate? I don’t know him or him as a coach. But, knowing how hires go at many schools, no college coaching (or recruiting) experience won’t get people interviews.
Totally agree. American gets a good hire, why would they interview someone with minimal experience? This will go away.
Looks like Ohio State could be somewhat warm. Assistant coach left and can't even find a mention of him on the website. That program had a solid couple seasons a few years ago before spiraling downward. Went 4-10-4 in 2019, half of those wins coming against Miami OH and Ohio U. Really poor for a school of that stature name and the resources there.
Better record than OU. OU has national championship programs in almost every sport but their soccer program couldn't even win one game with their new coach this past season. A bit embarrassing IMHO for a school with such an amazing sports reputation. Texas is going to clean up in the Big 12 for the next four years and TCU is going to continue to be a strong contender.
TCU needs to prove it beyond this season. They pulled out some close ones, and they aren't always going to have someone like Emily Alvarado in goal. And never underestimate the ability of Texas soccer to come up short of expectations. The Longhorns haven't won a conference trophy since 2007 and haven't won the league in 20 years. Some of their fans would like Angela Kelly to be on a much hotter seat than she seems to be, regardless of recruiting.
Totally agree. I don’t see Texas doing much over the next few years with Kelly as coach. She hasn’t proven she is capable of dominating the top few programs in the conference on a yearly basis so I see no reason to think they will be winning championships regularly. If Texas get a new coach I would then believe they could make some major strides.
Not sure how many hot seats there will be, buy-outs for soccer will be extremely rare for a couple years, in my opinion. But, there could also be some big contracts expiring and not being renewed to bring in cheaper coaches. That could be interesting.
Does anyone have information on what is happening at Oregon State? I’m hearing Kagan is in hot water with his administration and is under investigation. Not sure on the reasons why though. Is this accurate?

Those are two interesting posts. Both Oregon State and Army coaches did good jobs there in short times (as least as far as win/loss goes). I know nothing about them otherwise. That is why I was so surprised to hear something is going on with the administration. The program was doing a complete turnaround but supposedly there is some type of investigation. But then again this seems to be the era of investigations with all the stupidity going on with programs such as Cal being investigated as well.
The Army coach posted a himself in Army apparel on January 2nd. He was also talking about recruiting in late December. So whatever happened was very recent and seemingly unexpected.
