I hope it's better than it looks.

One possible ray of hope -- most of the people I know with ACL injuries tell me it doesn't really hurt like that. You can walk, you just can't move laterally.

Are you f***** shitting me. Ugh. My heart sank just watching that. Hearing that scream did not help either. This does not look good. It does not look at all. If there are some football gods out there....... the kid may need some help.

In front of the coaches, on your full debut, desperate to make an impression? You're giving your rational brain too much credit there.

With the caveat that it seems knee injuries are pretty tough to figure out, am I the only one who thinks this really didn't look bad? Hopefully it's more of a big scare than an ACL. I think an MCL would be a relatively quick recovery, no? Probably being too optimistic, but someone's gotta do it!

If he got injured in three years after my post you would be patiently waiting for that too? Go have fun gloating.

Man seeing knee injuries like that make me go super crazy conscious about how I move even around the office. Making sure I don’t make sudden random movements that would ever hurt my knee especially since I walk a lot between offices or when I’m out of work, playing indoor/outdoor soccer.

Thankfully, I’ve never had an injury like that (knock on wood)

Man, this reminds me of the time that I tore my ACL while running a vicious flamewar on Bigsoccer. Fortunately I'm pretty sure @bungadiri took my side so it was worth it.

I’m no physician so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I’ve had some very painful non-contact injuries when they first happened, and even though they required some time off, each time I was up and running again inside of a month or two. Again, I’m not trying to offer a medical opinion on the matter, but I hope it’s that and not what we fear it could be.

I hate to speculate but he might have ruptured his patella tendon.

I am with you. Perhaps just optimistically. MCL could be a few weeks to a few months but much better than ACL.

Here's an update from Eindhoven Dagblat, the local paper.

Not really necessary to use Google translate on this one:

"Trainer Roger Schmidt van PSV was niet optimistisch over de situatie."

I will say MOST knee injuries are no longer the death sentence they once were. Look at Derrick Rose; the guy has tissue paper knees and still a high level player. VVD will come back as solid as ever for Liverpool. Richie was never going to be a burner, so even if he lost some speed it doesn't take much off his game. Best wishes to the kid.

I have been waiting all day to watch the replay and then this before 15 minutes is even up. Ugh. Poor kid. Works his way into more 1st team minutes.... gets his 2nd start in the last couple of weeks and then <bang>.

It looked really bad to me, the way the lower part of his leg gave out and then was dangling leads me to believe he blew up his knee with multiple torn ligaments, meniscus damage and possibly even the worst of all a patella tendon rupture. It's also possible he tore his quadriceps tendon.

You can walk after a torn ACL, just can't move laterally. You can't walk after a torn quad tendon or patella tendon because literally your tibia and fibia are no longer connected to your quad muscle: if you attempt to stand your knee will buckle and when you try and straighten it you realize you no longer have any ability to move your leg. None. Might as well be paralyzed until surgical repair.

The poor kid that tore his patella tendon on the yankees, Dustin Fowler, tried to stand and then collapsed.

Anyways, I hope to be DEAD WRONG on any and all of this come next week.

Yea the trainers know almost instantly from their diag test how bad it is. Like if his knee is the size of a grapefruit, he heard a rip and felt a rip, and the trainer bends his knee and then asks Richie to straighten it and Richie says he can't -- it's bad.

They will wait on the MRI results overnight if it's like US sports and then confirm tmr.

“Trainer” is being used here as a synonym for head coach. Schmidt is PSV’s manager.

Feels a little like Johnny Evans clattering into Stu kind of horrible. Man I’m sick for the kid.

  22. Man, this sucks major league for Richie.
Hope he will heal fast and good.

Backward twisting fall often = ACL. Hopefully it's not worse than that.

Nobody can. Everybody needs so so so much depth to really compete internationally. Absolutely devastated for Richie and his family, all the work he’s put in. He has a journey in front of him. We will be there with him.

This happens though. If you’ve been a US fan for a while you know.
