You play those teams twice because Pitt bussed to those games. I’m sure they couldn’t find another opponent. They weren’t going to bus 8 hours to Boone and 14 hours to Charleston for one game. Most teams weren’t willing to do ACC testing protocols.

Then playing Navy twice I think actually looks good for Pitt. Navy was 16-3-3 last year and in the NCAA tournament. Pitt now has 2 wins against a team that was conference champ the previous year and makes the NCAA tourney every year.

It was a good tune up for Pitt before Fl State. Better than inter squad. Also first game went into OT 1-0. Pitt certainly better on wide field vs navy small one.
It seems Navy played their entire bench since they have no league games. At least 3 gks saw the field.

Maybe some of the seniors on Navy will not be able to compete in the spring. Announcer said despite another yr of eligibility granted by ncaa, service academies can not honor it. They are called into service. I believe Pat League is like Ivy, no red shirt except medical.

So it is good that Pitt was able to accommodate these young ladies that have dedicated 4 yrs as student-athlete in service academies get chance to play out their final yr of games.
Today's game was a little better than score as Pitt rec'd an unearned pk in 2nd half. And pitt defender had great header save in the net of a would-be-goal.

Which brings me to another point. Really bad call. Even announcers were disappointed. Pitt girl fell not pushed.
We have seen a good amount of bad calls this short season. Hopefully that flushes out by spring. Are refs being graded?

and for what is worth unc/duke volleyball game, unc players are playing their conference matches in masks. I have not seen any team play games in masks yet.
Currently duke (unmasked while on court) leads in matches and in points.

Pitt will get struggle Thursday night with Florida State. No questions about it. The big game for Pitt next week is Sunday vs Miami. A game they will be favored in and if they win will put themselves in a decent chance to make the ACC tournament for the first time ever. Good chance their season comes down to the final game of the year when they visit Wake Forest. That could be a play in game.

Why is it better than intrasquad if you are already playing 10 + games ?

Announcers today said Pitt have been given 7 penalties so far. I have no comment on the if they were all deserved, but i do know that cannot continue.Referees have been too conspicuous this year in the ACC. A conference that holds itself up as a soccer conference needs to have refs set a tone that promotes attractive, contested but clean soccer. Its way too physical in open play and them you see the most ridiculously soft calls in the box. No they are not graded.

If its about accommodating them, then great. I would love to hear that story from the announcers. To be fair, the extra year thing applies to the majority. For most it will be irrelevant.

Just off the top of my head thinking about Pitt’s pks not all 7 have been deserved but they have been called. Doesn’t matter the level, refs miss some calls with pks.

I don’t think the pk today against navy should of been called. Looked like the two navy players ran into each other and West’s momentum took her down.

The rest in my mind are deserved. You could argue the virginia one was pretty soft but if you get the right angle you see the virginia player leave her leg in Parker trips over it. Probably sold it a little but if your going to just throw a leg in your run the risk of giving up the pk.

Pitt leads the nation becasue they have played the most games

If Florida State is accurate with their shooting I think it will be a long night for Pitt. There are gaps in the defense which can and will be exposed in conference play. Virginia Tech and Boston College, both struggling teams, showed what can be done against Pitt's defense. The loss to Tech still stings though. That game was within Pitt's reach this year and they let it get away making the Miami game all the more important. Nonetheless, as of today Pitt still controls their own destiny as far as making the ACC tournament and that is where they want to be.

Some questions I have about the spring.

If COVID testing is still required how many of these smaller conferences do you think wont actually end up playing because of the testing cost?

I’m also curious to see how some of these teams fill their schedule. For those ACC teams that only played the 8 games this fall, who will they play in the spring? Will be fine if all the smaller conferences play non conference but the ones that have announced schedules look like they are doing conference only in the spring. How do these ACC teams fill their other 12 games? Probably only option is more ACC games or scheduling nothing but SEC or Big 12 games.

Maybe NCAA can step up and put some of the football (and hopefully basketball) money to use by providing the necessary tests to all the conferences since they are more readily available (and less costly now). They may be eligible for a federal grant to be able to do this, too.

Two conferences not playing in the Fall have announced they will be playing in the Spring and have released Spring schedules: Southland and SWAC. That these two conferences, particularly SWAC, have released schedules suggests that almost all of the other conferences are likely to be planning to play. Whether they will play remains to be seen.

Although the schedules currently posted by most of the Southland teams and all of the SWAC teams show only conference games, they leave room for non-conference games and a couple of the Southland team schedules show some Spring non-conference games one of which is against a SWAC team. I take that as meaning the teams from those two conferences are able to schedule non-conference games if they want to.

The program as a whole, they have slowly gotten worse the last ten years, more so the last five.

As to UF, 5 years ago they were the dominant SEC team. They went 19-4-1.
They lost in the Sweet 16.
The last 2 years they they were 7-10-1 and did not make NCAA.
Last year they were 11-9-1 and lost in the 1st round to USF.
Now how much the big roster had to do with it, I don't know.
    Their decline is undeniable.
If I'm an opposing coach recruiting against them, I definitely use their roster size in the case against choosing UF.

    Another strange ACC game

the winning team failing to create anything significant from open play.

If I was a Pitt fan, I would be happy with their fall slate. It was a powderpuff start to the year, but given all the scheduling constraints there are playing in the middle of a pandemic, it may have been the best available schedule. Besides, creampuff out-of-conference slates have been used, famously, by John Thompson at Georgetown and, to a lesser degree, by Lute Olson at Arizona. They certainly had strong programs.

The reason for playing fewer games now, and more in the spring, would be if you want to impress NCAA selectors with your spring prowess since the more recent wins will hold more sway with the voters. Pitt was never going to make it to the Dance this year. Leaving just five games for the spring gives it much greater utility for player development. I'm not sure I'd want more games in the spring, to be honest.

And if Pitt beat up on substandard competition and rode that to a flukey 6 - 0 record and #14 rating, all the better. Give the women something to celebrate.

Why play them 2x. I ask the same question of UVA wrt playing Va Tech 2x, both non conference.

As far as records during this COVID affected time and the impact of making the tourney or whatever, who knows.

Hypothetical, but if a team could make it to the dance every year by gaming the system, but got blasted every year in round one, is that success?

Building a program must be hard, especially in this day an age where most want instant results.

There are 65 other teams that would say sure they would love to be at the dance even if blasted out. What was that first round game I think Stanford played 16-0 my recollection (give or take a goal or two for Stanford).

What Pitt and other teams have to worry about are February, March, April and May weather. In Colorado, it's not sunny and warm. Likely snow and a lot of it. Pitt will not be sunny and warm either. Fall and early spring weathers are very different in many regions.

That will be the challenge for most teams; in addition to the scheduling nightmares with guys and girls soccer, guys and girls lacrosse and football being played on the same fields. Logistical nightmares ahead.

It is a hypothetical, but the premise is not correct. Check out what happened to the Ivy League bubble teams last year. The Committee is smart enough not to be gamed by scheduling.

Any idea what the heck is happening at Miami? I didn't expect they would be a contender but they gave up 6 goals to Notre Dame, 4 to Clemson, and EIGHT to a so-so Virginia Tech squad today. They've been outshot 102-23 for the season and outscored 25-2. Thought Barnes did well at the mid-major level but this is different. Are they missing players for this fall? Miami is a challenge to compete at the ACC but Anagnost made them competitive and would have thought they would be better than this right now.

And was hoping BC would have shown better. Losing Coffey to a transfer last year because she hated the previous coach was a hard blow as well as the injury to Bike. But thought they would have done better than 0-4, soon to be 0-5 when they have UNC this Sunday. That was once an top 10 elite program and now they're at the bottom of the conference for the second straight year.

ACC is very top heavy. The worst thing you can be is a team with personnel that does not match your identity. Thats Miami and BC.

Pitt just put out an article saying this weekends game with Syracuse has been cancelled. Said the reason was because the ACC has decided to only allow 16 games instead of 20.

I've been watching Duke at UNC. 1st half just got over.
Neither team was overly impressive IMO.
UNC did have more chances. They are definitely more dangerous.
Duke made a few nice runs until they got to the final third. Their passes in the final third were horrible.
UNC's passes were marginally better, but not great!
UNC does have that insane depth.
Maybe the 2nd half will be better.

On a side note, it was enlightening to hear that Anson encouraged Wubben-Moy and Russo to go pro because they both had opportunities.

Agree. What do you expect? One team presses using subs and the other is not quite good enough to make them pay. Remember these UNC players are supposed to be the MT of the future.

As far as Russo and WM let’s be real. AD can spin it how he wants. If I want to be a pro, I don’t play for UNC.

I'm not what you are talking about as to going pro.
I know that the 2019 WC roster had 5 from UNC, 3 each from Stanford and UVA.
I will say I was not overwhelmed with the usual UNC unrelenting pressure and finishing ability.
I believe that UVA and FSU would be hard (not impossible) for UNC to beat.
Of course, I could be all wrong. JMHO.
I just saw a lot better passing in the FSU/UVA game.
