I agree. Rules stayed the same. We'll never know, but I was never worried about the Clark situation because I figured Garber would make them take a token amount, especially because they never actually trained Clark. I'm sure some phone calls were made, especially with the guaranteed-ish sale to Leipzig.
I'd like to hear some thoughts on what does everyone think of goalkeepers without technical skill trying to play out from the back. There's a point here that I'll get to afterwards, but I'd like to know what general philosophies are on this. Do you want all of them trying to play intricate passes or if they can't play with their feet should they kick it long?
Kind of leading the witness here a bit haha. If someone sucks at something do we think they should do it? Probably not.
The reason I ask this question is because some will say that the goalkeeper has to be trying to play the ball. Some want them to do what their skillset indicates. The reason why I think it's pertinent to this thread is because Chris Brady doesn't even try to play out of the back. Anytime he doesn't have an unpressured square pass to one of his defenders, he will kick it as far as he can. Outside of that, he's been brilliant in USL. He's taken the starting job with Madison over a 27 year old from Austria with pro experience in Germany and Austria. Thats no small deal. The other two HGP's loaned by Chicago to that team (Monis and Rodriguez) don't even make the bench regularly. What Brady's done should be getting a lot more attention, and he's a very talented player. For a keeper whose about 6'4-6'5, he gets down really well to stop shots. Rarely makes any errors either. This is a 16 year old keeper in a pro league, and he's doing very well. Is that enough or does he also have to be able to play out of the back? Because he can't. This will be a problem for some coaches, and won't for others.
Again, I wonder if he's going to go straight to Europe or sign w/ Galaxy. He can do the former already this winter, I don't know if the Galaxy have engendered trust yet, & he's blocked by Araujo & Insua. I think he's a starting caliber player at that level already. Like a lot of what I've seen. If he does go to Europe, hopefully it's a club with a good integration rep. Though LAG has the deal w/ Wolfsburg, & it may have been a prerequisite for them developing him that he return the favor.
Galaxy have got to get this one right. Either sell Araujo or Cuevas, and make the other your full time right back. Cuevas is coming off of a USL year where he had 4g and 4a, that’s tremendous production from an outside back.
They'd probably get lowballed on Araujo. It's partly youth NT coach's fault for excluding him & LA's own blunting his ascendance thru the benching last year & the start of this one. Also, this is a lost year Araujo couldn't help them advance in the playoffs. He could have done it his first two seasons if they played their cards right. But I guess you gotta cut your losses. Maybe if they only get a couple million transfer fee guaranteed they could have a higher % tied up in incentives than even Aaronson's so they could get 5-10 on the back end if Julian comes good.
If you are thinking of trending, then playing out of the back with your keeper is becoming more and more desired. Once the rules were changed so a keeper can’t use his hands on an intentional back pass the die was set. I think there are still coaches in the game that value safety over dangerous possession. Think of a guy like Dominic Kinnear. He’s not looking to pass out of the back. As a matter of fact, he’s not acquiring defenders who have that skill set, so having a guy like Nick Rimando does not help him. Kinnear is much happier having a Brad Guzan. Matias Almeyda on the other hand, he wants 60+ percent possession. He’s looking for defenders with passing skills. He needs a keeper that can pass in tight windows. Brady Scott does not work for him, but Damian Alguera does.
He already played a lot of LB for the youth teams, isn't the best case here for LA to get rid of Insua (who turns 32 in January) and play Cuevas and Araujo at both of the FB positions? LA is obviously incompetent and that won't happen but that seems like the smart option.
If I have a 16 year old keeper that does everything incredibly well but play out of the back ... I work like crazy to develop his passing skills. The global market has changed, and while some keepers can get away with it at lower levels, you aren't maximizing his career and your investment if you let him not do it. He's 16. He can improve.
While I agree with you, I also think this is one of the areas of the game that is harder to improve past around 13, 14, 15 years old. I generally think one's technique, comfort with the ball at one's feet, and passing ability is harder to develop later on. Players usually have this part of the game by their middle teenage years or they ever develop it. 16 isn't too old for it to develop, but I would say its close to when a player's pretty close to the point where there's not going to be much more technical development. I'm not saying it matters that much either. I'll take the keeper who keeps the ball out of the net better and can't distribute than the one who can distribute but doesn't keep the ball out of the net, as well. Some coaches though will require their players to play out of the back, and Brady is going to really need to improve in that area for some coaches liking. He's close to as good of a GK prospect as there is right now in the youth pool, but this is by far his biggest weakness.
I think we are all hoping they let him slip through the cracks, and he's signing in Europe in February.
Keller was god awful with his feet but I think many would still be cool with his shot stopping ability today.
But it really depends on how teams are set up. I remember Kennedy was a fantastic keeper for Chivas USA, but I recall him picking plenty of balls out of his net. On Weds night two young keepers Klinsmann and Marchinski went head to head and Klinsmann made several strong saves while Marchinski was barely tested, but Marchinski had about 20+ touches with his feet to help SJ maintain an enormous advantage in possession and attack Klinsmann repeatedly. Was the keeper making great saves more valuable or the guy that hardly had to leave his feet all night?
I thing that I’ve always wondered - and do not have an answer for - is why this is largely true. To what extent is it that it is physiologically more difficult to develop certain skills after a certain age? To what extent is it that if you haven’t developed a skill after X years of trying, you’re probably just never going to be able to do it?
Brady was terrific again. To be fair to the kid, he also had a few nice chipped passes out to the fullbacks today. I think it's hard to understate how impressive what he's doing is. You rarely see goalkeepers playing professionally anywhere at his age, and he's doing really well each game. Ciaran Dalton of New York Red Bulls II got 19 minutes in USLC this season, him and Brady are the only 04s or later to have made an appearance in USLC or USL1 so far this season.
I should've remembered that. I watched that game a few weeks ago. They subbed him in for Lewis in when the game was already decided. You rarely see that type of keeper sub, but it made some sense to give him his pro debut.
Galaxy have no doubt offered Cuevas a HG deal so in my opinion it’s very telling on his future plans that he hasn’t signed already. I know Jalen Neal, Marcus Fernakus, and Alejandro Alvarado have all been offered HG contracts. Galaxy should start announcing these kids at some point. I wouldn’t be shocked to see Cuevas and Alvarado move overseas. Cuevas because it’s long been rumored and Alvarado because he’d sit the bench for the first team as they’d sign DP’s for his position
