With 3 points achieved – both the objective and an obligation – in its 5-0 home ground victory over Bolívia on October 9, Brazil flies to the Andean nation of Peru for its second fixture in the long march towards the 2022 World Cup. And it will face a team it faced twice in 2019, a team which has become much more competitive in recent years: Peru.

Peru was the team whom Brazil faced and defeated in the 2019 Copa América final, and also one of the opponents whom Brazil not only failed to defeat but was defeated by in the friendlies towards the end of last year. A sturdy team with gritty players, Peru reached the World Cup for the first time in 36 years as it qualified for Russia 2018.

The last 5 years of Peru’s history are inseparable from former Palmeiras and Vélez Sarsfield manager Ricardo Gareca. Gareca spent 5 years at the Liniers club, where he won a few national titles and whose most memorable campaign may have been his club’s run to the 2011 Libertadores semifinals, where it played a brutally competitive yet exciting back-to-back against Peñarol, who lost the finals vs. Santos. Gareca stayed at Palmeiras for a short time, where he won the respect and appreciation of many Brazilians for his good manners and simpatia wherever he went and whenever he spoke.

Gareca led Peru to a third place finish in the 2015 Copa América, which took place not long after he took earned thanks to a wrongfully allowed hand goal). Gareca then held on to his job as Peru struggled in the first half of 2018 WCQ, with only two home wins against Paraguay (1-0) and Ecuador (2-1). Peru was awarded 3 points following a 0-2 loss at Bolivia as Bolivia fielded a player irregularly.

It was in the second round that Peru ultimately managed to finish in 5th place overall. Following a 0-2 loss vs. Brazil and a 2-2 draw at Venezuela (mirroring the 2-2 draw vs. Venezuela as hosts earlier), Peru managed 3 consecutive 2-1 wins vs. Uruguay, Bolivia, and at Ecuador; this was followed by a 0-0 draw at Argentina (which Peru came closer to winning than the hosts) and a 1-1 draw vs. Colombia. With a 0-0 draw at New Zealand and a 2-0 win at home, Peru booked its tickets to Russia.

At the World Cup, Peru landed in Group C, along with France, Denmark, and Australia. Peru lost 0-1 to Denmark and a young man named Kylian Mbappé (who would later become famous for his other goals in the competition) scored the lone goal which ended Peru’s dreams. Peru regained some pride by beating Australia 2-0.

Following the tournament, Peru retained Gareca, and last year, Peru suffered a 0-5 rout by hosts Brazil in São Paulo, but managed to oust Uruguay on PKs in the quarterfinals and to surprise many observers through a 3-0 victory over expected finalist Chile in the semifinals. Peru lost the final 3-1 but through a PK was the only team who scored on Brazil in the tournament.

In other countries, Gareca may well have been fired at some point in the first 9 fixtures of the 2018 WCQ campaign, but he was allowed to stay and the decision paid off. The Peruvian federation kept him after the 2018 World Cup, and his political capital rose a bit after Peru got a small measure of revenge by beating Brazil 1-0 in a late 2019 friendly.

Peru did not earn 3 points in its visit to Asunción’s Defensores del Chaco, although it opened the scoreboard. The Paraguayans scored 2 goals but Peru managed to score again to secure 1 point. Now it goes to Lima to host Brazil, and it does not want to remain winless going into November’s round 3. The pressure will be on, and emboldened by their late 2019 win (and with the memories of the continental cup final still on their minds), Peru will do everything it can to make Brazil’s life difficult.

A name which made history for Peru in recent years is Paolo Guerrero, who became famous in Brazil because he scored the lone goal in Corinthians’ 1-0 victory over Chelsea at the 2012 FIFA Club World Cup final. He was a key member of the 2018 WCQ roster, and scored only 1 goal (the second and final goal for his team in the tournament, when Peru beat Australia). At 36, Guerrero was excluded from the roster in a sign that Gareca is looking to the future and is attempting to renovate the team.

In Brazil’s favor is a track record showing Peru has never defeated Brazil in World Cup qualifying matches, although even when Pelé was a teenager, Peru would lose to Brazil by the narrowest possible margins, and as Brazilian victories in Peru in WCQ have only happened 2 out of 5 times.

    4/13/1957: Lima, 1-1
    4/21/1957: Rio de Janeiro, 1-0
6/10/1977: Cali, Colombia, 1-0 (Brazil won)
    6/4/2000: Lima, 0-1
    4/25/2001: São Paulo, 1-1
    11/16/2003: Lima, 1-1
    3/27/2005: Goiânia, 1-0
    11/18/2007: Lima, 1-1
    4/1/2009: Porto Alegre, 3-0
    11/17/2015: Salvador, 3-0
    11/15/2016: Lima, 0-2

The following are the starting XI for Peru in its 2022 WCQ debut match at Paraguay on 10/8/2020:

Pedro Gallese; Miguel Trauco, Luis Abram, Carlos Zambrano, Luis Advíncula; Renato Tapia; Christian Cueva, Yoshimar Yotún, Pedro Aquino, André Carrillo.

I expect a great match against Brazil in Lima.. Gareca more than likely will send the same team (4-5-1) that beat Brazil without Guerrero 1-0 in that friendly in late 2019.. This time Farfan will likely start for Ruidiaz.

Brazil is a tough opponent, but not impossible to beat..

Now Globo isn't showing away games (except the Argentina one) because of the new rights model for WCQ games where you have to negotiate with the away NT federation for the rights to show the game. So the only place the game will be available today in Brazil is EI+ online. And maybe some Ecuadorian service on YT.

SBT is trying to acquire rights for those away games. Freakin mess.

I guess I ain't watching it unless I find some feed online.

Argh, the original post should have read: "Gareca led Peru to a third place finish in the 2015 Copa América, which took place not long after he took the job. Peru advanced out of the group stage, a result earned thanks to a wrongfully allowed hand goal over Brazil."

Brazil may bench Éverton Cebolinha, who would be replaced on the starting XI by either Rodrygo or Richarlison, As for Peru, Alex Valera and Raúl Ruidíaz have been released from the roster due to Covid-19, and as far as I know, Ricardo Gareca has chosen not to cap other players to replace them.

I dont know what box you have, but lucky for you if it works. My box's SporTV is so glitchy. I gave up and decided to watch Brasileirao (what I use it for) via Fanatiz.

Neymar with a PK goal. Game tied at 1-1.

Peru has been very aggressive, marking Brazil in its own half of the field.

This was Neymar's 62nd goal with the national team. He has tied Ronaldo the Phenomenon. Only Pelé is ahead now.

Richarlison scored, but VAR confirms it was scored in an offside position. The score remains 1-1 for now.

Neymar complicates things. Could have taken a quick shot.

Richarlison ties it up off the corner. Header assist from Firmino. Important goal.

Everton Ribeiro dangerous turnover on a silly dive.

Ref calling a PK on Neymar now. Not sure. Gonna get reviewed.

Looks like a PK although not sure Neymar gets to that ball. The lack of good replays on this feed is infuriating.

That should be a red card for the Peruvian player on Richarlison. That elbow looked intentional. Yellow card at first from ref but needs to get reviewed.

    Peru 2 x 4 Brasil - FT

    Peru: Carillo (6'), Tapia (59')
    Brasil: Neymar (28' P, 83' P, 90'), Richarlison (64')

Don't think we deserved the win. A draw would have been a fair result. Peru gifted 2 PKs. Their physicality and press gave us a lot of problems.

I appreciate you're upset, but VAR said it was a PK on Brazil's first goal and on the third. The defender who body-checked Neymar did so even though Neymar would not have reached the football. And then when Zambrano got red carded for that foul on Richarlison, your team was left undermanned and with Brazil having brought in fresh players (especially Everton Cebolinha), the fourth goal would likely not have happened if your team had 11 men to the end.

Peru is what Colombia has been for a while: a team with much talent, athleticism, speed, and now, hunger. I think this Peru is even hungrier, with a greater killer instinct, that Colombia has been in recent years. This is likely partly due to Ricardo Gareca.

No one in their right minds thought Peru would have been as easy as Bolivia. Peru beat Brazil at the end of 2019 and they will give many other CONMEBOL sides a lot of trouble between November 2020 and the start of 2022.

Did we not deserve it? Well, we took the chances we got and we capitalized on them. If Neymar had missed the 2 PKs, we'd have a 2-2.
