I'd the say the opposite. It will be even more needed when Henderson will play. We've all seen Henderson with England, he does not exactly manages to pass forward under pressure, he does the opposite. And it does not unbalance the team at all when Grealish drops.
It reduces the options for Grealish to pass to. Like it or not, Southgate wants players who will function within how he has the team set up.
I think maybe Southgate might be mentioning Mount a lot after discussing Grealish to try to create the point that he wants all players to do the pressing work off the ball. Saying that we do struggle to press as a team too often (Southgate’s responsibility). I don’t think it helps either player for him to keep doing the Mount/Grealish thing. It just sound strange to me and different to the way he reacts to all the other individuals in the team. I think Mount has done well for England personally and has positive qualities for this squad. Seems he’s become a bit of a scapegoat online (Not particularly on here).
Spot on. I’ve thought the same about the work off the ball argument. As always with Southgate the problem lies with the balance, he’s not good at picking players that complement each other well
Surely Southgate’s not dumb enough to play a back three and exclude Coady .. the only CB used to playing in a three plus who’s shone like a beacon when he’s played .. he was organising everyone around him on Thursday..
I actually thought that Trippier had a poor game on Wednesday.. he’s usually rock solid but he was nervous from the start and it seemed to rub off on the others and I lost count of the number of misplaced passes ..
Although he has perfected that way of playing though .. he was involved in all the most promising moves on Wednesday and on his debut .
It's not just about pressing it's also about how Mount plays. He's in the mould of guys like KDB and Bruno and looks to play forward and quickly all the time. You could see that as soon as he came on. Southgate clearly wants his team to attack with fast transitions which is not the way that Grealish plays. Grealish often slows the game down and holds on to the ball for too long.
Is it past your bedtime ?? The other two mentioned hadn’t perfected it as well as Grealish has - so they would , on occasion , unbalance the team ..
Nope, Grealish gets hold of the ball which we are severely lacking. Mount has played for England with rice and Henderson, plenty of pressing and quick transitions, absolutely disastrous performance from the midfield with 0 control.
Mount is a good but limited player. Hes only 21 so its hard to expect too much of him too soon. He reminds me of Thomas muller. Not great technically but gets in dangerous positions. Can score a few too
That first 30 minutes was worrying .. they were playing some real nice stuff and looked comfortable until Jack took control for the opening goal
Agree. We started off slowly because wales kept passing the ball in their own half. Once we scored they had to come out. Grealish was immense at teasing them to come into midfield. That opened up more space for our midfielders. After the goal we controlled the game. Dcl won virtually every header. I said before the game that he was made for international football. I could see him getting at least 25 goals for England. Ings was excellent. I didn't realise he was that good. Winks was OK. Phillips grew into the game. Saka came out of his shell second half. Our options all over the park are the best I've seen in my lifetime. We still have players like maddison aoc and Ali to come into it. Plus hopefully the re-emergence of Greenwood and foden. Our strength in depth is awesome right now
Meh. Chances for players to impress. No one plays that formation with their clubs. New players and combinations against a settled A/B wales team. 4 days or so to prepare. I didn't enjoy the first 30 either, I was pretty much the same as you but they grew into it and played reasonably well. Happy to critique but just players getting caps and comfortable in the squad, seeing who we can rely on and we can't is useful enough.
They weren’t peppering our goal but they spent a fair amount of that time in our half whilst we hardly got into their half ..the commentators touched on that very point saying our midfield was outnumbered and over run preventing us from getting hold of the ball .
I know this was the other thing Southgate mentioned. I think it is somewhat harsh of an assessment. The problem I mainly have with it is that for vast spells of games under Southgate we can’t even create these fast transitions in those areas of the pitch. We can’t get the ball through the press. The team set up is disjointed etc. Best option is continuously the longer diagonal. In fact watching Southgate’s teams you would think having someone in the team who can keep the ball and force being double teamed would be a benefit as an outlet ball. It’s like Southgate thinks we have this perfect system and the personnel to play it and this is why Grealish needs to adapt completely to it. Perish any thought that we might be able to get Grealish to adapt or work within a system.
