Not convinced that Phillips is an improvement on Rice just yet. Keane always looks awkward to me.

Mount was excellent when he came on and upped the tempo with clever work on and off the ball. Beggars belief that he gets stick.

Grealish, Pope and Coady were clear positives.

Saka, Ings and DCL didn’t let themselves down either.

They aren’t particular similar players though, and he played in a much more advanced position when he came on. Mount barely touched the ball in England’s half and winks regularly received the ball off the Centre Backs.

Theres clearly something gone on with Grealish and Southgate. Did Grealish ever play for Southgate in the under 21s. I know he played for the Irish u21s.

Sorry, but what are you playing at? That is a 60-second answer about Grealish cut down to look like he spoke for 11 seconds before changing the subject.

Just seen the whole answer, still a bit strange to constantly talk about Mount when asked about Grealish but ok, he did say a bit more.
PS : the English journos are absolutely clueless, the level of the questions is embarrassing

Grealish, Ings and Calvert-Lewin all played well once the team started to click and not isolate them, and Saka grew into things as the game went on, but let's not kid ourselves that you can take a great amount from that game. It was pretty much a Wales B team, made up of bench warmers and lower division players. Every England player should have stood out in that match.

Southgate just doesn’t appreciate Jack ...

    After match comment ..

    ::::

“ He’s different to anyone else we have in the squad and while it’s true he drops deeper to link up play well that takes him away from the danger areas ... “

It was great to see just how much it meant to the likes of Grealish, Coady and DCL to be playing for England. It seems we've come along way since the days when Carrick said playing for England gave him depression.

Agreed and this is a concern for me as granted it was much better in the second half and even though it was pretty much a B/C team for us, that Wales team wasn’t strong either. The issue now is will Southgate play the same system against Belgium because I think we will see a different result and all round performance against them if he does and we will have problems. I’m just not a fan of that system, we will get found out against better teams imo but I think Southgate will persist with it.

I'll bite. Marsh and Bowles have reputations for squandering their undoubted talents, which suggests that the problem was them as much as the England set-up. Think both were seen as p!ssheads like Best (long before my time so might have got that wrong)

Le Tissier was a bit unlucky, but he was picked fairly consistently around 1994 for a few years, but doesn't seem to have done too much with those oppportunities.

My first tournament I remember as a kid was Euro 96, so he might have had some bad luck in those games? I know we didn't qualify for the WC in 1994 so suggests we weren't in great shape.

Good Lord this is getting to a religious cult like level, where its some kind of offence to even mention others now in the presence of the our lord and saviour Jack Grealish.

Have you ever seen managers post match interviews? It is not at all uncommon to mention other players when talking about others. Managers want to share round the praise and no they've got a limited amount of questions to do so.

Plus why are England fans taking it out on Mount? He was fantastic when he came on. He's already become the next target for abuse for England fans now just to this kind of mentality.

Why do people keep saying wales b? It wasn't. They had nearly a full strength team out. First choice back 5. First choice forward. Only bale and ramsey would have made a difference to that team

Bale, Ramsey, Allen, Robson-Kanu, Vokes, James, Wilson, Brooks all missing.
The defence is fair enough, but these are all improvements on last night's team.

"As recently as 2018, Southgate went to the World Cup in Russia with Danny Welbeck as the top England goalscorer in the squad on the back of a season in which he had scored only five Premier League goals for Arsenal. Marcus Rashford was there after netting seven for Manchester United.

The context here was that the only two English players to reach double figures for goals that Premier League season were the already retired Rooney and then 34-year-old Brighton striker Glenn Murray"

Murray and Rooney were the only English players to reach double figures??? erm...guess no-one told Kane, Vardy and Sterling.

Moore is their first choice striker. Wilson only plays off the bench. Brooks hardly plays through injury. Allen hasn't played in a while. Robson kanu has only just returned after retirement. So I would say definitely only bale and ramsey would be considered difference makers. Let's not argue over it though

On last night's game, I was very pleased to see Southgate give chances to some of the new faces and thought they largely repaid him. Even though it wasn't necessarily a free flowing performance thoroughout, it was definitely a night of positives and a step forward in my view, which you couldn't say for either of the games in September. I also feel that even if, long term, Southgate sees Grealish as a left sided player and not a central one, then he should be ahead of Rashford and/or Sancho based on form in the former's case and performances for England in the latter. I just feel Grealish has that mercurial element to his game as well as the personality to always make things happen.
