I think you are talking about the "expanded" CWC originally scheduled for the summer of 2021? This is about the "last" edition of the current format.

Al Nassr are through to the semis (i.e Western final) thanks to a "Pity" Martínez goal.

Scoreless between Pakhtakor and Perspolis at halftime but Pakhtakor has been playing with ten men since a (stupid) red card in the 15th minute.

I didn't realize Pakhtakor had a red card guess that's why Persepolis have been so dominant. Was it a legit call? Glad I didn't go after all I guess.

With Al Ahli out, we are guaranteed a finalist who've never won the ACL before now. And what's with all these former MLS stars going to Saudi?

Yes, it was a stupid reckless challenge.

Al Nassr, in spite of never having won the ACL, played in the 2000 CWC because in that inaugural edition the AFC Super Cup winner qualified (and they won that by winning the now defunct Asian Cupwinner's Cup.)

As for MLS players going to Saudi, would you prefer they go to Qatar? :D

Well even if they go to Saudi, I guess I have a better chance of seeing them in the CWC here in Doha than if they stay in the MLS....

Well, that's that. Persepolis takes it 2:0. Pakhtakor shot themselves massively in the foot with the early red card. So the West Asian semi-final played on Saturday is:

Al Nassr (KSA) - Persepolis (Iran)

Bayern win the German Super Cup over Dortmund and now only need the CWC to equal Barcelona's 2009 "sextuple".

Will they get the chance to do so?

Well from what it sounds like... this player has a reputation for this sort of a thing it's even on his wikipedia page lol.... "He was also called up in 2015 for the King’s cup in Thailand, but he received a red card in the first half after launching a flying, studs-up kick into the chest of South Korea's Kang Sang-woo." I guess there's something else to add now....

So the semifinal will be played in Qatar eh? I thought initially they were only playing the games up until the round of 16 here? Anyway, I really wish they'd let some fans attend. Would want to see what would be my 4th AFC Champions League simifinal here in Qatar after El Jaish vs Al Ain, Al Sadd vs Suwon Bluewings, and Umm Salal vs Pohang Steelers.

Note: I'm now hearing that the Champions League final itself will be held in Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakra... fingers crossed...

I just hope the East can complete their side of the bracket. Here we are about to determine the Western finalist while some Eastern teams have yet to play a single match in the group stage.

Games are in November - December no? Yeah it's weird there's such a time-gap. Final scheduled just 6 days after the east region but 2 and a half months after west semis

Persepolis bear Al Nassr on penalties and are the first ACL finalist.

Interesting. I wonder if the kick-off times will be earlier in the day to accommodate Eastern viewers. And with that change it makes full sense that Qatar also hosts the 2020 ACL final.

Coming up next weekend, the first legs of the CAF semis.

Wydad Casablanca - Al Ahly 0:2

Cairo's Al Ahly has one foot in the CAF final after beating Wydad away. They are now coached by Pitso Mosimane, the former long-standing coach of 2016 winners Mamelodi Sundowns. This after a sudden departure of Swiss coach Rene Weiler. I could be wrong, but I don't think it has been very often where a powerhouse club in the North is coached by someone from sub-Saharan Africa.

In other news it seems the CONCACAF CL could be back in December:

    CAF Semis - First Leg:

Wydad Casablanca - Al Ahly 0:2

    Raja Casablanca - Zamalek 0:1

Looks like we are headed for a Cairo derby in the final that will take place in Egypt unless both Casablanca teams advance to the final (then it would be in Morocco).

Elsewhere, the AFC has confirmed Doha for the ACL final.
