The short answer is no in my opinion. Here is the long answer. I think while Nadeshiko play a 4-4-2 it will always be tough for her to find a place in a Nadeshiko squad. She is quite versatile and can play on the wing, but really she plays as a support striker or as an advanced midfielder for JEF, which pits her against - re the national team - Tanaka, Ueki, Endo, Sugasawa, Kobayashi and Momiki. I have left out Hasegawa and Iwabuchi because I believe they are automatic starters when fit. If they did look at her I think she would only have a genuine chance of making the squad as a kind of utility player, because she is incredibly versatile. Maybe they would consider her for midfield, but the system would have to change to a three woman midfield. I think she could be very effective alongside Sugita and one other midfielder (Naomoto?), but I can't see it changing anytime soon. I like her because she works so hard off the ball, which would make her really useful defensively in central midfield against stronger opponents when applying geggenpressing. She does get a bit carried away sometimes like today where the coach could be heard screaming at her to stop pressing so much and calm down. But she is very good on the ball and makes very few mistakes when she has it, which is no easy feet playing for JEF. Although she is short, she is very strong and keeps her feet very well. Of course I am merely speculating here and I don't know who Takakura might pick, but despite liking Narumiya very much (probably my favourite player in the league now with Miki Itou) I doubt she will get called up for an international any time soon. I would very much like to be wrong just to see how she would go. But first she needs to get called up to a Nadeshiko challenge camp again. The last time she was called up was in 2018 with YOKO! The midfield situation for me has not really been settled and the postponement of the Olympics has made it even more of a problem in my opinion.
I like long answers! It was a really well-thought analysis, I appreciated it and I am afraid I have to agree with you, as much as I would like to see Narumiya get called in NT too. Anyway, looking at the scoresheets from the last two matchdays, we could almost say that Yui Narumiya single-handedly defeated the traditional top powers of Nadeshiko League: the winner goal vs Beleza last week, the brace vs INAC this week, to triumph on her own personal "Clasico".
Today's result: Nadeshiko League Albi (Nagasawa, Sonoda Mizuki) 2-0 Ehime Jef (Narumiya 2) 2-1 Inac (Tanaka) Nadeshiko League 2 Yamato (Enokidani) 1-1 Setagaya (Horie) Jumonji (Segi, Kojima, Simamura) 3-0 Nittaidai Nippatsu (GonNo, Takahashi) 2-0 Chifure Nagano (Ohkubo) 1-2 Orca (Nakajima 2) Harima 0-0 Bunnys
NWSL Fall Series update: Chicago Red Stars-Washington Spirit 1-1. Kumi Yokoyama started and played 75'. You can see her in highlights, although she doesn't look much involved except for a good pass in the box in 2nd Half:
Vegalta and JEF exchanged places with Iga and Nojima after this week: it looks anyway like these teams are having high and lows in a middle-of-the-rankings position. Ehime FC Ladies, despite their somehow good brand of football, are the only team who slid much behind, at just 5 points, now at a 6 points (two full wins) distance from the one-to-last position. First win of the season for Jumonji FC Ventus vs direct rivals of Nittaidai, that are now at a 2 points range from them. Chifure AS Elfen Saitama lost again! Something wrong with their team, this season: they've fallen at 6th place (while Orca Kamogawa FC jump at 2nd).
Yokoyama is Spirit best player up front, but with little support given she is wasting her time in this club imo. Last match proved as much - she often was in good position on point of attack, waiting for a pass that never came. I expect she will be moved back to midfield role of assist maker again very quickly. Only benefit so far is that she gets minutes playing in the league but it may yet prove not enough to made Olympic roster...
Well, that's basically what we always did in past years when we were running the Goal of the Week feature, so I definitely expect us to choose Goal of the Year at the end of the season the way we used to do in the years just past 2011. Meanwhile the Digest from this week has been published: My selection: 1) Yui Narumiya's 1st goal in JEF United Ichihara Chiba Ladies vs INAC Kobe Leonessa (I hate that the action was started by a Sameshima's blunder, but Narumiya exploited it with a stubborn run in the box and an absolute gem of a finish! Great player ); 2) Yui Hasegawa in Nippon TV Tokyo Verdy Beleza vs Iga FC Kunoichi Mie (if Hasegawa's trick never gets too much old it's also because she has showed so many variations of it from different angles, in different situations and under no matter which weather conditions ); 3) Yui Narumiya's 2nd goal in JEF United Ichihara Chiba Ladies vs INAC Kobe Leonessa (clean simple action, but very well played: Narumiya is clever in her timing, fast and clinical: what could you want more?). So, yes, my podium for this week is only made by all of the goals scored by some "Yui" in this match-day, no matter the surname!
Goal of the week contest. Choose three best goals from each round and award it with points: the best - 3pts 2nd best - 2pts 3rd best - 1pts 11th round highlights (12th round schedule) My pick: Hasegawa vs. Iga FC.... 3pts Hamada vs. Nojima....... 2 pts Narumiya (2) vs. INAC... 1pt Current standings: Hasegawa............11 pts Narumiya (1)........11 pts Narumiya (2).........5 pts Hamada.................2 pts Sonoda..................1 pt voted by: blissett, unepommekun, KAPIJXM, Manchester Nadeshiko, Lechus7
Being on a mission to restart every player's thread in the Women's Fans forum, I found this one with a gr8 video, and I have a question for you, yes, you... Miho Fukumoto - World-Class Goalkeeper www.bigsoccer.com/threads/miho-fukumoto-world-class-goalkeeper.1474102
It's a shame that the most vocal fans of Fukumoto on this forum, thread-opener @And G and @mumf, aren't posting anymore here: they were also the main experts about Fukumoto's career and the most likely to answer your question: don't forget that most of the ones who post right now, joining this thread during WWC 2011 or soon after!
Yes, I heard about the great World Cup Fandom Coincidence of '011. Certainly not meaning to exclude anyone - Fukumoto also had some career highlights after that year in tournament- and medal-winning teams, didn't she? Hope Solo? Well, she's good, but she said very rude things to interviewers and to the police after various defeats/arrest, may lose a few points for that. ...Or do you mean Kaihori? Two world-class goalies in one team is not a bad number!
Yes, he does mean that. @KAPIJXM is well-known as the most hardcore Kaihori's fan on these boards. Edit: did you stop voting for Goal of the Week, @sbahnhof, or you only do it from time to time?
Another interesting interview with Kikuko Okajima on WE League "One of the characteristics of the WE League is that it sets a "minimum annual salary for professional contracts" (the J League does not have a minimum annual salary). The minimum annual salary is 2.7 million yen. The amount is based on the starting salary of college graduates." - that last sentence carries a lot of weight as it does picture women pro-football as viable career path for girls to their parents, family and society as a whole.
Of course Kaihori, I can't stand Solo just for that you said. Ayumi had some blunders in her career (some because of sight problems, I must say), but in general she appeared when she was needed.
Apologies, I've been so busy bumping unpopular threads. (I had been going to vote in that one tiebreaker week, but the consequences would have been far too hilarious.) Haven't seen the current standings, so this is just blind guesswork... 1. Hasegawa (Beleza) 2. Narumiya's first one (Jef) 3. Hamada (Mynavi)
Tomorrow's games: Nadeshiko League Nojima vs Beleza 13:00 Urawa vs Jef 14:00 Nadeshiko League 2 Bunnys vs Yamato 13:00 Jumonji vs Harima 14:00 Setagaya vs Nagano 14:00
