So he’s lying? they literally told us he didn’t make the trip to Canada Bc he forgot his passport Andrew himself had Instagram stories mls Cup weekend of him partying.
It's between Carleton and Atlanta. It seems neither wants to discuss that in public, and rightfully so. Time to stop asking questions.
I listened to the podcast (One Goal) and I don't recall him discussing anything about the incidents or whether they were accurate. He said he made highly publicized mistakes and he learned from them. He had lost the joy of playing soccer in Atlanta and has been working on having fun again on the pitch. The really interesting bit, for me, was his historical accounting of how he got to Atlanta. He says he had spent a lot of time at the Man City Academy (his best friend was Phil Foden). That Man City wanted to sign him but his entire family would have had to move to England and the family didn't want to. Man City came up with a plan to have him sign with NYCFC then get sold to Man City at 18. Just as this was in the works, Atlanta was awarded an MLS franchise. At that point, he instantly became Atlanta property; now his choice was to move to Europe (which they didn't want to do), wait till 18, or sign with Atlanta. He actually says he was happy to sign with Atlanta and anxious to get on the field. Andrew doesn't bad mouth Atlanta at all; but you get the impression he was promised certain things and then Atlanta signed Barco and Almiron and spent big in areas and they didn't follow through for him. But it was interesting to learn that if Atlanta had not been awarded a franchise, he would have been at NYCFC for a year then at Man City. I think he can come back and have a good career. I do think his ceiling was lowered by this mess. It is a good interview and Andrew sounds like he is in a good place mentally. Just taking it one game at a time and having fun again.
I just want to point this out because I see this in a lot of places. It’s not as easy a parent (or family) moving to Europe. They have to move for non footballing reasons. And these days with the internet it’s relatively easy for fifa to come up with evidence that the move happened because of football(even if the parents do get a job). Case in point John Hilton. You can read his court case online. And of course the bigger the name the easier for them to decide the move was for soccer. In other words, they google the kids name, discover he’s getting YNT call ups regularly and that’s all they need to know what the real reason for the move was and deny the player their pass.
Is he still in Netherlands? I remember when this kid was truly rated one of the top 01s in the nation. He was physically dominant and could play several positions. There's a similar case in the FC Dallas system. The family ultimately returned to the US. The mother tried to justify the move by finding a job teaching English abroad but FIFA came down hard on them.
hey guys, i cut my hair 🤭— Andrew Carleton:) (@andrewcarleton7) September 4, 2020 It’s time. I’ve been waiting for this day for over 3 years. His return to greatness is now inevitable.
If my first-division side is that poor to have to decide between the two, I’m picking Mendez. Carleton is a fine set-piece taker but Mendez is better. That’s pretty much the only way I’m scoring while I bunker for 80% of the match.
https://theathletic.com/2102522/2020/09/29/ Interesting article/interview with Andrew Carleton. It main takeaways seem to be that Carleton was told by FdB that he was not in the team's plans this year (which makes sense, he is a bad coach in every sense of the word in Atlanta) and the below quote from Carleton: “I made plenty of dumb decisions (in Atlanta),” Carleton said. “I tried to grow up and correct my wrongs and mature as a person, but a lot of those dumb decisions came from being mistreated or just a whole bunch of other stuff that we can get into a different day. I was struggling there off the field and kind of fell out of love with the game of soccer there and didn’t really enjoy it.” I don't full understand what the above means without knowing specifically what he is referring to. But it will be interesting to see what happens whenever Atlanta gets their next manager. Right now, there is a lot of turmoil at the club, so maybe a new manager comes in and gives Carleton another chance with the team option. Who knows
I have lost most interest in Carlton as a National Team player. I don't think he ever makes it back to that level based upon these passed few years. After watching ATL play FCD recently, if Carleton can't even get on the ATL roster ( they are really bad) he may not have much of a career in MLS. Of course there are probably some hard feelings there, but ATL could really use someone, anyone, to help them. I don't like the quote where Carlton complains about being mistreated. Even if true, you don't throw that out there if you are working on a redemption tour.
Complaining about being mistreated, publicly, and using that as an excuse is weak. What does that even mean. Youth players all across the globe think they should be in the 1st team, are not, yet show up and grind every day until they get their chance.
He takes the correct step in saying he made plenty of dumb decisions, then proceeds to undo it by blaming them on others. It’s really what we’ve come to expect.
Andrew doesn’t have the mental capacity to make it big as a professional footballer. It’s time we forget about him. He will forever be a highlight reel player. For the USMNT his career is done, it is time we close this saga
I'm not expecting much from him -- even at the MLS level -- but I will be rooting for him and will remain interested in him. He's a unique player whose upside has flattened over the last bit of his career, but I'm still intrigued by his play and believe that, at his best, he is a really fun player to watch.
imagine if carleton were from philly and not atlanta. i’d be pretty bitter by how things went if i were him too
Shrug. I still don't really know what happened behind the scenes in Atlanta. So I can't really judge. What I do know is that he clearly harbors resentment to the Atlanta brass..........fairly or unfairly. I'd find it hard to believe he'll ever play for Atlanta again. Hell, he signed in the spring of 2016. 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020. 5 years. His contract must be up after this season anyway. Andrew Carleton is only 20 years old folks. I won't be giving up on him. But here's a question? Where would Andrew Carleton rank right now based on performance of USL players 20 or younger? Would you take him over.................Gallegos? Based on performance, I take Gallegos. He's not only not close to the USMNT...................he's not close to the US U23s. We have this whole generation of Euro-based attacking players breaking thru, spearheaded by Reyna. Carleton's resume ain't in the ballpark. But that doesn't mean I give up on him as a player or person. He can right the ship. He just has to shrug off the chip on his shoulder. And I think breaking the chain to Atlanta has to be the start of that.
The problem with Carleton isn’t on the field performance. It’s super consistent off the field issues that follow him no matter where he goes. Carleton got a taste of life after leaving residency and it has impacted his career. I think at other clubs he would be getting MLS minutes but his off the field issues make a strong argument for him not going further than that. Did Atlanta botch his development? Absolutely, but Andrew has a massive part in his fall from grace as well. Sadly, some players never fully get the professional lifestyle. Most major soccer countries have 2-3 of these kids in every age group, this is our first big one For the USMNT he really isn’t in the picture as a potential prospect anymore. He isn’t even in u23 consideration at this point. If he was in the current u20 cycle he wouldn’t even make it. I really feel bad for him because Atlanta admittedly had no plan for him, but Andrew also failed to learn from his mistakes. He’ll be an MLS player but the USMNT bar will soon be set in Europe
Atlanta definitely botched his development. I think with Andrew the worrisome thing is he seems to be headed downhill/stagnating. He’s in the USL at 19, fine, so is Gallegos and he is definitely a USMNT prospect. Not everyone has to be at a top european club before 20, and a player like Andrew still has so much time and potential, His future success depends on how much his mentality has truly changed, and his next club.
Have you heard of issues at Indy? We know about issues at Atlanta, but I haven't heard that the same things are happening at Indy. Whatever happened, he never got the chance that Barco got and that is a bias issue throughout much of MLS. Barco also had off the field problems, but they were dealt with much differently than Carleton's. I suspect his upside is Tommy Thompson now. But throughout this thread, I have maintained that AC signing with Atlanta will be looked at as a big "What If" in American soccer.
