A thread to post thoughts, observations and musings on ACC matchups. Im watching Duke vs. UVA and I really like Sophie Jones, she is creative and fun to watch with the ball at her feet.

How many chances did she create? I thought she had an average game. Its strange, but when I listen to these games it feels like the narrative is already pre set.

Its ok for a good player to have an off night and for a commentator to say so.

Kudos to the Syracuse goalkeeper. She had a phenomenal game. Pitt out shot Syracuse 27-4. I never thought I would see a day that Pitt outshot an ACC opponent by that margin. I’m very happy with the direction Waldrum has Pitt headed in. Heather Lyke (Pitt AD for those that may not know) needs to pay that staff and wrap them up long term

So realistically what teams in the acc are you trying to beat?

I think the big games for Pitt this year to win will be Syracuse, Boston College, and Miami. Good news for Pitt is they have all of those games at home. If they win those 3 then they likely only need 1 more win to get into the ACC tournament. I think that’s the goal for Pitt. Finish top 8 and make the ACC tournament. They have to win all 3 of those to have a chance.

I think they will have a shot against Wake Forest and Virginia Tech. Possibly a chance against Clemson. Took them to OT last year. I wouldn’t bet on Pitt against Clemson.

Try not to get embarrassed by Florida State and Virginia.

I'm with you. I see her and I wonder just how the heck she was player of the year coming out of high school. She's ACC level good, but watch, she'll make All-ACC, because as you say, the narrative.

Let me clarify if i can. I think she is a really good player when put in the right role and surrounded by the right players. If you put her at the 6 with an athletic 8 who can cover ground and a mobile forward line she would excel.

My issue with the narrative around this stuff is the context. There are lesser players in better situations who may well have better years even though they are worse players. To me, these "awards" should be about how good a payer has been in the season concerned. They should have nothing to do with how well a player performed the season before or ow good their resume was coming into College. Too often there seems to be a legacy impact that allows certain players to live on past glories.

For emphasis, Jones is an excellent player but last night I thought she had little influence on a game UVA dominated. She is very clever and the one thing i loved about her last night was how she worked the ref to give her freekicks when she was trapped without options, by just going down.

Well, couldn't that be said for most players? Put Player A with Player B who will do their defensive duties and dirty work, and couple them with really active forwards. What skill player wouldn't love that?

But I do get your point.

Yep. Falling on the ball and grabbing it, forcing the ref to choose between the fall (foul?) and the hand ball. The refs in the premier league are finally starting, albeit slowly, to call these handballs, so hopefully NCAA refs will start doing the same thing soon.

Here is a different question for the spring.
Many or a few of the next year's recruits come in the spring.
If they play will they lose a year of eligibility.
Will they have to play w/o scholly funds?
I ask this because seniors will still be here (I assume) and playing.
I suspect coaches will have to make some tough decisions unless the NCAA allows more schollies due to the COVID.

Any transfers or incoming freshmen who start early in January will not be able to play in the games in the spring or participate in the tournament.

I am not ready to jump on the Pitt coaching staff band wagon quite yet, although the team is off to a markedly better start this year. No nail biter games yet. I am waiting to see what Pitt can do once they face equal or better talent this year and faster opponents. What happens to Pitt when an opposing team manages to keep West off the scoreboard? Is there enough offensive talent on the field for Pitt to overcome that? Is the defense actually solid this year or has it been the quality of the opponents that make it appear so? I think there are still many unanswered questions about the strength of the team but I do like the promise they have shown to date. I believe Navy will prove a stiffer test for Pitt tomorrow than its first two opponents. Hopefully they can keep the momentum going.

spoken like someone who is, in fact, on the Pitt staff

no doubt they’re starting to turn the corner, but, might be nice to finish top half, first. If not a little better. Maybe this is the year?

    Some random thoughts

    1. Referees need to give more yellow cards. They make it too easy to destroy.
    2. Why do Central Attacking Mids seem to get more scoring opportunities than forwards?

    1. Agree. I think refs think “oh she didn’t mean it.” It’s awful tho. They could fix a lot of the game but carding fouls that are clearly fouls.
    2. Forwards, imho, don’t make great runs and can’t free themselves. So they end up just occupying the back line and the midfielders find that space.

Pitt was better than Syracuse but Syracuse was awful. Neither team looked very athletic

On 2, I agree. Thats part of it. i think on many teams, that is the primary role of the forward. Occupy CB and make the odd space creating run. There are very few creative attackers in the ACC I can tell you that first hand.

Also GKs are so variable that a lot of CAMs are encouraged to take long shots from that area.

    3. Many of the perceptions/narrative about players is based on who beats up on poor teams. Would be very interesting to see data on top 10 players that either only looked at games vs other top 10 team or weighted stats/performance by who its actually against.

I believe it would really change the perception of many players

On a side note, Miami must be one of the worst teams in the NCAA.
FSU absolutely dominated ND 5-0. ND goes down to Miami and annihilates them 6-0.
I know that UVA lost a ton of back line talent, but their defense looked porous against CU.
CU was very pesky and aggressive, but they only went down the right side offensively. I was screaming (figuratively speaking) at CU to switch the field, but they seemed unwilling. Must be very weak down the left. They will fight you though.
The difference between a Clemson and a UNC is the ability/willingness for back line players to dribble forward and take on players 1v1 when needed.
That GKer (transfer from Villanova?) for CU is a stud.
Ordonez is a monster in the air. She has what you would call a 'nose for the ball'.

Pitt fortunate to get out of Annapolis with a win today. Lucky not to give up a PK with that karate kid flying knee tackle after Robinson bobbled that ball in the box late in the second half.

They will struggle with the stronger ACC teams if they perform like they did today.

The home crowd (engaged and very verbal) obviously got in the heads of the Pitt players considering their end of game displays of emotion. I always believed that home crowds influence referees and games (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1469029201000334) You just generally see and hear more subdued crowds in women's soccer as many perceive it as "bad behaviour" in the U.S. to heckle opponents.
