Im sure it’s also probably a bit of motivation for the player.

It would be fitting in a literary kind of way that our first single-name player since we grafted Preki on is a Brazilian named “Johnny”.

There's just something about a USMNT jersey with "Johnny" on the back that seems so right. It feels All-American. :D

One game, but that's not an impressive reel. Overly methodical to allow the d to adjust, relatively basic passing for a deep lying playmaker & when he tried to expand range he didn't see the opening. Hardly a quick, tough tackler, and over-committed in the box on that one play to allow an opportunity. Hopefully he grows.

Nearly my same thoughts..... then I remembered he's 18. At 18, I was on the bench picking splinters out of my ass for my college team and more worried about that night's party than I was about the game going on in front of me. :D

I think any evaluation of his 2 min comp probably underestimates the tactical level of the Brazilian Serie A. His team had a huge possession advantage and his role was probably just what he played. 6 that drops to provide a constant possession outlet. Do you want Jorginho or McTominay to make a whole bunch of high-tempo, line-breaking passes when Chelsea plays Watford or Man U plays Norwich?

If his team is superior, that's all the more reason to expand your passing range to help break down an organized d.

I'm pretty sure the gameplan wasn't that when you actually do so, don't connect on the passes, and when you finally get around the ball to win it back you make speculative challenges in the box.

The age was a reasonable caveat. But then he should be separately evaluated if he's playing sufficiently enough against the comp & relative to teammates to maintain his place at the very least which is the initial goal before moving on to bigger ones.

I think I’m gonna subscribe and watch a couple of matches if he keeps starting so I’m able to better evaluate.

My apologies, I just think we need to have a little more perspective for how huge this club is. He is 18 years old.

Let’s watch what we’re watching. His role is not deep lying playmaker on this little squad.

Gregg's dream. A stiff, barely moving, passing #6.

Alright so the kids got game, is it time to start worrying about Brazil swooping in yet?

3rd straight start for the top team in the league. no clue how the league compares to others, of if he has genuinely "won" that spot (possible injuries to other players etc). i dont know that ive seen a picture of this kid, much less watched him play.

i dont think adams and mckennie need to be looking over their shoulders specifically in relation to this kid, but i also dont see any reason to not think (at the very least) "hmm. cool. keep it up, johnny". i mean, there were dozens of posts saying its tanner tessman time for starting one match in mls when at least 3 others guys at his position were injured so...i just dont get the reasoning for dismissing him rather than adding him to a list of dmids for us, however low.

There are injuries, but this is still a big deal. The Brazilian Serie A is the 6th best league in the world according to SPI. This is a much bigger deal than a player starting a few games in MLS. Internacional has sold the following players to European clubs in recent times (Johnny earned his first Serie A start at an earlier age than all but two of them):
    Luiz Adriano (Shakhtar Donetsk)
    Alexandre Pato (Milan)
    Oscar (Chelsea)
    Alisson (Roma)
    William (VfL Wolfsburg)
    Iago (Augsburg)
    Bruno Fuchs (CSKA Moscow)
    Sandro (Tottenham)
    Fred (Shakhtar)
    Charles Aránguiz (Bayer Leverkusen)

Credit to Charlie Kennan and ChuckMe92 for putting that list together.

Brazil is oozing with talent. I’m not too worried about it. Johnny was in camp with the U23s and accepted a call up to the cancelled March senior team camp.
