They are exceptions, not the norm. If Davies didn't sign in Vancouver, he would have ended up in Europe the same way David did. However, you can make the case that Adams was fully developed by NYRB academy. As you can witness, Vancouver ain't it. He was being specific to the Canadian context, he wasn't wrong That's an oversimplification and misunderstanding of how the 3 MLS clubs have ran their business in Canada. The real question is : Were Canadian youngster trash or were Canadian youngster that came up via those academies trash using your language? I could name you the best players currently part of the National team that were develop in Canada and most of them weren't from MLS academies Davies? Edmonton David? Ottawa Larin? Sigma - Mississauga Laryea? Sigma - Mississauga Kaye? Scatrborough/ York University / TFC Doneil Henry North Mississauga / TFC Junior Hoillett? Brampton before going to England Vitoria? Woodbridge Fraser? TFC & Whictecaps Kamal Miller? Vaughan and Kitchener Manjrekar James? North York & Sigma Sam Adekugbe? Calgary and Whitecaps Liam Millar? North Mississauga - was told by TFC he was too short to ever make it Past Owen Hargreaves? Calgary Foothills --> EPL & Bundesliga Rob Friend? Okanagan, BC -->Eredivisie & Bundesliga De Guzman? Scarborough & Europe -->Bundesliga & La Liga Stalteri? GTA academy -->EPL & Bundesliga De Rosario? Scarborough --> MLS Ricketts? Edmonton-->Norway, Turkey, MLS Jim Brennan? Woodbridge--> EPL Hutchinson? Brampton --> Norway, Eredivisie, Turkey *Many more played in Europe outside of those top leagues playing elsewhere in Europe. But sure, MLS academies came along and surpassed all those academies who had good track records at developing good players virtually overnight? That's not realistic I agree, the Canadian guys developed through those academies for the most part, weren't good enough. A) What does that say about those academies to begin? B) What about the rest who aren't from those academies? -The good ones went to Europe to leagues comparable or better than MLS -The ok guys went to lower tier or USL/NASL -the bad - nowhere Also, people need to start differentiate the 3 Canadian clubs in MLS vs MLS as a whole. MLS as a whole was "positive" for what it did for the game in Canada, however, the way those 3 clubs did their business at the CSA level and developmental level has brought it's share of setbacks. That criticism is 100% warranted on those clubs and David agent was being specific to the Canadian context, not US and unlikely directed at the whole league
Beneficial? yes. As good as hoped/expected? Not remotely close. The Canadian MLS academies have been around for how long and spend how much money a year on development? Whats their success rate? Why can't they develop a player who gets good MLS minutes every year or two? The Whitecaps operate how many full time training centres throughout Canada? 10? If TFC doesn't sign Richie Laryea after he gets let go from Orlando, do you think an American club gives him another chance to prove himself, considering he doesn't count as domestic in MLS? Without that, he's either in USL or is playing amateur senior soccer working a day job. Canada's issues are obvious: 1. Lack of proper development for youngsters in this country. Obviously we are light years behind countries that have a soccer culture. Our soccer culture is really only now kicking into gear because of Aphonso Davies/CPL/Worldcup 2026 hosting. 2. Historically there were so few limited professional soccer jobs in this country that if you aren't a phenom ready to hit the ground running at 18, good luck getting multiple chances to prove yourself. Why would a coach take a chance on you when he can sign some older journeyman who at least won't make growing pain type mistakes, even with no real upside? He just cares about keeping his job. Go out on loan to some USL club, where no one cares about your development. We now have a league where 8 teams have young players who are getting real playing time and learning to be pros. We have coaching staffs who are getting experience which will permeate throughout the country. We have kids going to watch these games in person dreaming it might be them someday out there. I can't wait to see where things stand in Canada after 5 years of the CPL, likely miles ahead of where our program was after 5 years of Canadian MLS clubs.
Did they get the extra money? Do you want to give MLS some credit for giving people the opportunity to play soccer? More popularity, more clubs, more opportunities to play. Take Owen Hargreaves back in the day, he didn't take up soccer until he was 15, a year later thanks to having British parents he was in Germany.
If we're really being honest MLS as a league and the teams themselves didn't start to take youth development seriously until almost 5 years after TFC entered the league. Not to mention that the quality of MLS as a whole was shitty prior to 2015. The criticism laid at the feet of the 3 Canadian MLS teams is certainly warranted when it comes to playing young Canadians. Even today there are really only about 5 teams in MLS that are truly/fully committed to youth development and giving young players meaningful minutes in MLS games. This isn't just an issue for the 3 Canadian teams. Toronto in particular is disappointing given the amount of resources they have at their disposal. Also given the amount of money they've spent on their training and academy facilities. Outside of RSL, FCD, RBNY, Philly and maybe SKC or Seattle(which are both a stretch) there really aren't any teams that are committed to giving meaningful minutes to young players. The markets of the Canadian MLS teams aren't helping them either. Those fan bases demand having a winning product on the field. Those fan bases aren't going to be patient to allow for a youth centric system. I'd say it's safe to say that the Vancouver fanbase has run out of patience at this juncture. CPL will help, but it's going to take time. Covid certainly isn't going to help matters. If this pandemic had happened in 2010, MLS likely would have gone the way of both incarnations of the NASL.
Yes, Davies gave it up and Bayern paid Davies = Class! https://theprovince.com/sports/socc...ng-transfer-to-bayern-munich-came-to-fruition “In five minutes, I summed it up to them, explained to them what we wanted, and they said ‘We can’t do that.’ I said ‘that’s fine’ … packed up my books, got up, said ‘we can talk tomorrow. You guys go call Germany and see what you need to do.’ And I walked out,” he said, adding he got Bayern to up their salary offer to cover the 10 per cent he’d had expected from Vancouver.
Well the old story with Owen Hargreaves is that he had a German coach at Calgary Foothills who was able set up some trials for Owen in Germany.
It's not just about development though. It's about fermenting interest in the game. Some of the TV ratings in Canada have been phenomenal.
Champions League qualification Canada's GK Milan Borjan advance to the 3rd qualification round with a clean sheet for Red Star Belgrade Cyle Larin scored a goal in a 3-1 loss against PAOK Thessaloniki. He's still being linked to move to Belgium but based on his performance last season, they would be wise to stick with him.

That's nice, what cable providers still offer it? Comcast/Xfinity and Spectrum don't. Even when they did, they charged $15 or more a month just for that channel!
Sorry, I don't do cable, haven't for many years, so I have no idea about cable providers. I am not sure why anyone would pay the outrageous prices cable providers charge. Fox Soccer Plus is on Fubo TV in 24-hour HD in the International Sports Plus package for $6.99, with several other sports channels (all in HD). This is from the Fubo webpage: International Sports Plus $6.99/mo Essential streaming for international sports fans. Get live coverage of world-class soccer and more, including all the biggest tournaments.
If you have Dish formerly known as Dish Network you can access Fox Soccer Plus on the Fox Sports Website and apps as part of the 250 channel subscription. Dish offers the channel but it is 15 dollars a month so why bother.
$15/mo. and in SD on Dish, last time I checked. Lately, Fox Soccer Plus has been most useful for the FIFA youth tournaments, where they have some of the games live that are not on FS1 and FS2. It also has a lot of Australia and New Zealand sports (rugby, Australian Rules Football), if you like that stuff.

Updates France Jonathan David played 69 minutes for Lille in a 1-0 win over Stade Reims. In my opinion, Jonathan Ikone and David are not a good match holding on the ball longer than he should and wasting good opportunities. It's still early though. Chile RB 25 years old Juan Cordova was named on the league's team of the week representing his club Huachipato who are currently 7th in the Sudamericana zone. Norway LB Sam Adekugbe played 90 in a 2-1 loss. If Davies were to be used as LW, Adekugbe would be my choice at LB. New reports are saying that Besiktas might be keeping Cyle Larin after all. Hos loan in Belgium did a ton of good for him and as you look at the highlights below, he's a totally different player.
