This Marlins situation with MLB is going to send some shock waves to university presidents. I expect this to be a very active week in for fall college sports conferences, especially those without football.
NCAA on RPI for 2020: NCAA also “allows conferences to inform sport committees how they will determine their automatic-qualifier representative up to two weeks prior to selections.” Furthermore, NCAA said that relying RPI is probably not possible with conference-only schedules so selection committees will “likely need to rely more on information provided by conferences this fall to help evaluate teams for at-large selections.”
Your work has been incredibly valuable and will be missed this year, as will college soccer in the fall, most likely. A Creighton soccer coach said he thinks (and hopes) that they move the season to spring. But, football is the major holdup for fall sports.
I will miss you, your accuracy, your humor and obviously your RPI web pages and all their jazz. Idea: could we organise a Fantasy RPI? It will allow us to still have our fix of both East Coast bias and conspiracy theories about RPI unfair representation of our favorite team's real performance. After Fantasy Football competition, why not Fantasy RPI? Take care, A bientôt

Thank you. I think this is what is going to happen. What just happened with baseball is very instructive...one outbreak and it severely compromises the integrity of a season. I'm of a mind to push to play...at some point we have to come out and play. Whenever that is, there will be incidents like baseball just had and the media will go bonkers. We can't live the rest of our lives like this. Positivity rates had a secondary peak in the U.S. about 7 days ago and have been trending down ever since, but we live in a zero-risk world right now. Maybe we should all give up our cars, too. Big 12 football seems to be forging ahead, but the ACC may go conference-only in football. As football goes, so does all of college athletics. As it is, NCAA schools are looking at a 40% shortfall in revenue based on having no men's basketball tournament. Throw in no football this fall and we may see a vast contraction.
It seems that we haven't done the things that other nations have done to successfully control this disease. In our urgency to get back to normal, we (our country) rushed to re-open before we had the proper systems and stage-gates achieved. I hear you - but just saying the heck with it - let's go, seems to me to be a harsh decision that would double-down on previous poor decisions. I don't want others to lose or suffer insufferable injury to loved ones at the sake for college education. Just my 2 cents.
The other difference is there is no union to negotiate for the college athletes what the protocol will be, no bubble to be created. They are college kids relying on adults to make decisions for them with the primary focus of that decision being finances for the athletic department and the university... and then you are relying on college kids to act in the best interest of everyone and adopt safe social distancing measures while trying to enjoy college life ... a very slippery slope that in all honesty is lose-lose. With 1/3 of all programs having their conferences canceled to date, the NCAA will have a tough time hosting NCAA Championships this fall with all the travel, etc. A very tough decision is on the horizon that as I said is lose-lose for men's college soccer. Play conference only championships, a reduced tournament, punt to the spring and piss off football or cancel all together.
ACC going 10 + 1 model for football. Men's soccer will be a 6-game conference season + non-conference games allowed. Men's soccer start now delayed to Sept. 10. ACC Announces Plan for Men's Soccer https://t.co/G7MZmfB9Qu— RPI Update (@RpiUpdate) July 29, 2020
1 key thing I found interesting in that article was the wording of “Any additional games against conference opponents or non-conference opponents are at the respective school’s discretion and all opponents must meet the ACC’s medical standards” wonder how many schools that closed the door to for a potential game?
Add the Northeast Conference. So far that is 78 programs that play college soccer that have opted out of the fall or roughly 39 percent of the 202 programs. Not sure how the NCAA still hosts a championship. I would imagine those conferences dominated by football (Power-5) will play one time around their league and that's it for the max reward of a conference championship for the fall. Would imagine redshirting may become more prevalent with only 7 or 8 games being played.
At this point, I would like to see men's soccer moved to the spring. Too many programs sitting out tarnishes any championship that is still fought for.
Agree. At worst, it kicks the can down the road for canceling the season until the spring when we may have more information.
moved to the spring. In the last month Villanova has committed 3 transfers --including one from VaTech a few days ago-- and a German MF who they are high on. I think they are planning to play a BE-E schedule, but we'll see if the camps open in a few weeks.
Most likely decision day for the NCAA. I think they try to host a modified NCAA Tournament this fall so football doesn't go alone. https://www.startribune.com/decision-time-nears-for-ncaa-regarding-fall-sports-season/571999082/
B1G is in...for now: https://bigten.org/news/2020/8/5/bi...-season-medical-protocols-for-all-sports.aspx
https://t.co/LMhkDHvhT6— RPI Update (@RpiUpdate) August 5, 2020 If more than half of the schools decide not to play, the fall championship in that sport is canceled. We are at about 35%.
D-II and D-III have called off all fall sports. https://www.espn.com/college-sports...ncaa-division-iii-fall-championships-canceled Not looking good for D-I.
This is why we can't have nice things. https://www.courier-journal.com/sto...uts-paused-after-29-test-positive/3300339001/
More info; 3 players dismissed. https://247sports.com/college/louis...layers-dismissed-for-role-in-party-149949019/
Wild guess here but most likely these athletes aren’t key players to the teams’ success so it’s not going to affect results too much. Also, if these were football or basketball athletes this would be treated differently.
