Since's there's been so much fall out with the McGirt case, and a whole lot of stuff is about to happen with various & sundry sports teams and other stuff that is tangentially racial, but tends to fall more under government to government actions and treaty responsibilities - I'm starting this thread to not clutter up others and side bar overarching racial discussions...

In general, group self-referential for most of my life has been Indian (60%) American Indian (35%) & NA (5%) with the latter being primarily used by white passing Natives with little to zero interest in reconnection. Self Referential has always be tribal affiliation - Cherokee / Choctaw / Lakota / Dine, often multiple affiliation because of the pan-tribal intermarriage caused by the BIA Residential Schools, followed by clan / band

As previously discussed hundreds of times on this site, the overall use of Native American has been primarily by non-Natives, growing out of the American obsession of Americans in their Settler / Colonizer Ancestry (Italian-Americans / Irish-Americans / etc, etc)

Over time, with the reclamation of language, tribal affiliation has become more pronounced and the group self-referential has become just "Native", because we have existed before "America", IOW - the process of decolonization of people's minds & mindset about themselves

After being cut out of the loop by tribes and a rival Republican, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt is stumbling into growing controversy over a historic U.S. Supreme Court decision that affirmed the treaty rights of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation.

Stitt, who is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, announced the formation of The Oklahoma Commission on Cooperative Sovereignty on Monday, stacking it with a slew of non-Indian political, energy and economic figures. Not one tribal leader was immediately named to a panel designed to address the landmark July 9 ruling in McGirt v. Oklahoma.

“We absolutely need the partnership of the tribes for this process to be successful,” Stitt said as he left open the possibility that he might name an Indian leader to the commission, whose chair Larry Nichols is the wealthy co-founder of an energy company that extracts oil and gas from lands originally reserved for several Indian nations.

“I respect and recognize the sovereignty of every tribe in Oklahoma and look forward to working with every tribe to ensure that we meet our shared economic, security and social goals," said Stitt, who recently contracted the disease caused by the coronavirus.

Emphasis Mine - Governor Bushybrows is not the brightest blub - just the most confident that if he keeps doing the same thing in trying to bully the tribes, he'll eventually win - but, he's lost every time he's tried to take on the tribes or divide them...

OK State Supreme Court Rejects Gaming Compacts Negotiated by Gov. Stitt...

Gov. Kevin Stitt exceeded his authority when he signed gaming compacts with the Comanche Nation and Otoe-Missouria Tribe that included provisions for sports betting, the Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled Tuesday.

Those gaming compacts are invalid, the Court said.

Oklahoma law currently prohibits sports betting and house-banked card and table games, so the governor had no authority to enter into gaming compacts that would authorize those activities, the Court ruled in a 7-1 decision.

"The tribal gaming compacts Gov. Stitt entered into with the Comanche Nation and Otoe-Missouria Tribes are invalid under Oklahoma law," the Court said. "The State of Oklahoma is not and cannot be legally bound by those compacts until such time as the Legislature enacts laws to allow the specific Class III gaming at issue, and in turn, allowing the governor to negotiate additional revenue."

The Court said the governor does have the legal authority to negotiate gaming compacts, but that authority has limits.

"The governor must negotiate the compacts within the bounds of the laws enacted by the Legislature, including the State-Tribal Gaming Act," the Court said.

The ruling was a victory for state Senate President Pro Tem Greg Treat and House Speaker Charles McCall, who argued that Stitt violated the separation of powers between legislative and executive branches of government.

"This is a victory for the rule of law and preserves the foundational principle of checks and balances upon which our government is based,” said Treat, R-Oklahoma City.

Same as Black was bad and Negro was good and now Negro is bad and Black is good (although African-American is better).

At least, that's what I guess. The only way to really know is to get the consensus from the people to whom the term is applied.

I've heard some people say they prefer "Inuit" or "First Nations" unless using the specific group name.

As far as labels go, if we are going to have them, let the people with those labels choose what they prefer. I have a friend who prefers "Black" over "African-American" (because he's not the equivalent of a "Polish-American" whose grandparents came over from Poland). If some people prefer "Hispanic" over "Latino" or vice versa, that's your choice. The same thing goes for any group of people. Just tell me what you want to be called and I'll use that.
