The trouble with another lockdown is this situation is vastly worse than march

NYC shut down at around 3k cases per day and peaked at around 12k cases per day

Florida is already at the NYC peak before any lockdown

Florida is also testing 3-4 times as many people that NY was at its peak deaths... You can’t compare daily confirmed numbers from March/April to now. Back in March/April we were missing something like 70-90% of cases while now we are probably catching more than missing...

And that's likely why the death tolls are both so high at the moment compared to early-mid March, and will likely not reach the actual highs of April and May. Because we're testing more, the gap between excess mortality and confirmed deaths will be lower. That means more deaths now, but as people panic and go back into hiding (except for key workers, @spejic ), the death toll will likely be lower than the first wave. We have more and better information, so behavior will change quicker.

Your daily cases are now 10x the german peak - and germany was not missing cases

This is a enormous problem to bring under control now, because the scale is baked in. Even a hard style german/kiwi lockdown would need to be long and brutal. And if the political will does not exist - then what?

Yes... It is bad, you just can’t point at NY’s confirmed number from March/April and FL’s confirmed number now and say FL is as bad as NY was. We can’t be sure of that because we don’t know how bad it was in NY. If NY were cranking out the 50k-80k tests a day back in March that FL is now, NY’s confirmed cases would have been significantly higher....

It's been clear for a while that death rates will probably never get back to the horrors of Italy/London/NYC for a mix of reasons

Analytics, better case management, precautions for older people, PPE etc

ok - so lets accept your analysis and scale NYC cases 4x.

That means Fl. is at the point today that NYC was at when it entered a hard, long lockdown.

The NYC peak doesn't come till weeks later. So Fl. has to enter a tough lock down today to bend the curve NYC style?

Instead Fl is talking about opening schools. This is why i continue to believe Fl. is heading towards disaster

I don't remember playing soccer or running against any Asian kids from your school. I will say I did work with an Italian guy who had to shave twice a day by the time he was 20 from your city.

He's White. I had him called "your President" or "your boi" a few times when speaking to some Blacks I know.

Oh, it is far more than just key workers. It is anybody who cannot remote work and who needs the money to pay rent/mortgage. The death tool of those workers in customer facing customer service jobs is going be bad.

I am becoming more and more fearful that I will inherent some property in Florida in the near future. That being said, somehow I think my mom is not ready to die, yet, and nothing will kick her ass until that time. I hope I'm right about that.

This is my cousin reporting (literally, that his is job) from western Wisconsin.

    https://upnorthnewswi.com/2020/07/1...nger-for-enforcing-measures-to-stop-covid-19/

Incidents increasing since statewide order overturned by Wisconsin Supreme Court.

As the public face of the coronavirus pandemic in Chippewa County, Angela Weideman has been confronted by not only questions about public health measures intended to slow the spread of the virus but pushback against them that has, in several instances, prompted concerns for her safety.

I don't hear any Republican saying "don't attack the workers in the store. They are just doing their jobs." ********ing assholes.

VB government was supposed to open up. We spent many man hours at the top management level coming up with plans. I'll be stunned if the City doesn't go back to lockdown.

The teachers' group issued a statement that they don't want to do in person school.

Hampton Roads isn't on anyone's radar as a hotspot, and probably shouldn't be. But we're helpless in the face of this thing, and will be for the foreseeable future.

If one takes LSD every day, will that counter reality and make everything seem normal? Asking for a friend.

    Here's the plan.

    1. Only those who work in grocery stores or provide utilities such as electricity, phone service, water, etc. can work. You get food, water, medicines, and electricity. Not one other damn thing. Everyone else must stay in their house for 3 weeks.
    2. The armed forces, reserve, guard, and LEOs will deliver grocery and drug orders.
    3. The federal gvt. will make the printing press go brrrr like it's never brrrr'ed before.

    That's it. That's the plan.

and as that reality hits the general population of FL, how many residents will panic and scramble to get the hell out of there, spreading the problem even further? if you think there's a lack of political will now to take unpopular actions, which part/level of government will try to prevent that? how will other regions react?

Excuse me, guys, I am aware that I am probably too far away from US culture to have a say in it, I am just a white guy from the old Europe (and I am somehow embarassed that I have to spell it out, as if anyone should a priori justify his own identity before expressing his own opinions, something that basically doesn't happen where I live), but isn't that a little too much?

Identifying someone, even jokingly if you want (but we recently saw on this very thread how jokes actually often reflect the culture of a place or of a whole country), as a Trump supporter because he/she's white doesn't cross the line of the same kind of prejudice that people here claims to fight against?

There are, i think, a lot of white people who vote for Democrats, a lot of white people who support progressive views and a lot of white poeple who definitely aren't Trump's supporters and that could legitimely hate seeing him as equated to "their president" because of the color of their skin.

In 1832 Andrew Jackson was presented with a proposal for a national prayer day to combat a cholera epidemic. Jackson rejected that idea as being unconstitutional. You think Trump would respond that way to a similar suggestion?

This was 1832. And Andrew Jackson. Now I am further depressed.

In the context I experience, it was not party related, but race related. I'm left, and I make no secret of that, and I would not meet whom I meet if that were not the case. And the comment is said exclusively by Blacks to me, from nobody else. It is an aspect of the White Privilege we both know I have.

Just some guys talking shit, the same way that my wife periodically tells me that Trump is "my President" because he's more popular with men than women. Don't overthink it.

Me either. Someone once said to me, "You may as well just blow your nose on a plate and ask me to eat it." I'll eat the little slime pods just about any other way, but plain boiled okra....shudder.

You know we're not talking about people whose jobs are essential and therefore must leave the house. We're talking about the people who don't have the self-discipline to avoid the bars and churches and beaches and parties and restaurants and whatnot. Nobody here is blaming folks with public service sector jobs.
